Title: Had Liver biopsy Jan 2nd and her is results
Post by: Gerri on January 31, 2008, 05:25:31 AM
Yesterday, I was diagnosed with NASH. (non alcohol severe fatty liver disease, with inflammation.    I am to start on insulin for diabetes.  I am to lose 43 lbs by July.

No known cure for NASH.  Control is be within Normal BMI, and strict control of diabetes.  No answers yet for Lupus or Sjogren's (diagnosed by dentist).

I thought my diabetes was under control.  Normal readings are between 4-6, mine was 6-10.  Which are alright if you didn't have NASH.  Total shock when she said I must go on insulin, not just pills.  Hoping she is wrong and there is a pill out there without sulfa, sulfites, sulfates and/or any sulfer derivative.

Found two will have to ask the doctor about them (Miglitol and   ( ****Acarbose***** which will help with control the high Triglycerides)

The gastro didn't address anything other than liver problems (NASH and having me put on insulin.)

Hugs

Sorry to hear about this new diagnosis, NASH (non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis) is fast becoming a common illness, since it seems to accompany the fastest growing "plagues" of the 21st century: Type 2 diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and insulin resistance (metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X)

WedMD has an excellent overview at http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/nonalcoholic-steatohepatitis-nash-overview

The "close enough" scenario of blood sugar control that has been the standard for family doctors for many years is quickly being dispelled. Most endocrinologists strive for normal to low normal blood sugar in their diabetics, and after years of having patients tell me that "normal for me" is 10 or 15 or whatever, I'm so glad that guidelines are being tightened. In one instance of NASH (and this is purely anecdotal, not to be considered the usual course) I saw a patient normalize all lab values (blood sugar, lipid profile, and liver values) by following her calorie controlled, low fat diet and including mild exercise in her day. It took slightly over a year for the liver values to normalize after the sugar and lipids were controlled (which took 6 months to accomplish). A repeat liver biopsy showed resolution of the fatty liver with NO scarring.

Gerri,
Sorry to hear about this latest addition to your health problems.  I hope with the diet and new meds it will come back down in the normal area.

I hope too you are feeling better real soon.  This has been a long journey for you.

Hugs, Pooh

I sure hope you get to feeling better real soon. My youngest sister has been diagnosed with the same thing, and it is really bothering her. I am glad that you can do some things that will help it be under control or maybe even reverse it. Please let us know how things keep going. I said a prayer for your soon recovery.

Wow, I had no idea how common this was becoming, well the kidneys are breaking down, so I guess the liver will be next, except mine won't be the non alcohol variety.

Gerri-maybe after you get your diabetes under control you could change to diabetic meds instead of insulin?

Hi Gerri,
I'm also diabetic, type 2 on insulin. Diagnosed 15 years ago.
My A1c was 7.3 in November, the 6-10 you mention, is that your A1c ?
I had some very serious complications in November, not my liver, but I was told to lose weight and get on a strict diabetes regime. It sounds like you are in the same boat...

I went for nutrition and diabetes education and I pretended like I was newly diagnosed and started from scratch...
It is so hard... but I'm doing it... I test 3-4 times a day, use sliding scale Humalog and 20 units Humalin N at night. Eat 5 times a day 130-150 carbs per day... walk 30 mins a day... or use Leslie Sansone "Walk at Home" DVD.. the exercise is making me sore, but I'm recovering pain wise better each time...
And you know what ..   It's working !! I'm down 16 pounds and my b/s are so much better...
You probably have a good routine, but if you want to PM me, feel free...
Good luck with everything.......

Thank you Pooh... I thrive on 'structure'... so this is working...
I've gone Excel mad and created logs and charts to fill out everyday to watch my progress....
