Title: Osteopenia, what me???
Post by: Carolina on July 27, 2023, 10:07:50 AM
Well, I know why.  3.5 years ago I had bone density of 133% mineralization of my bones compared to a young adult, and 182% compared to adults my age.  High mineralization means STRONG bones.

THEN 3.5 years ago I started high dosage Medrol (a prednisone drug) to stop the Polymyalgia Rheumatica which caused me incredible pain.  Medrol is the only treatment. In theory it takes about 6 months and then you slowly wean off the Medrol.  The problem was that the PRM came back!  so I had to return to a higher dose, and round and round I've gone for 3.5 years.

Now I have a diagnosis of Osteopenia, most especially in my hip, particularly in the narrow bone that goes into the socket.  The bone that snaps more easily when it isn't strong.  That's where I am now.

I was so proud of my strong bones, until now.  Now my PCP recommended that I take a special OTC Calcium supplement Citracal Slow Release 1200, and lots of vitamin D.  My pillboxes runneth over!

And more than ever I want OFF Medrol.  The Methotrexate was supposed to work, but didn't.  I have an RX for Leflunomide which I am supposed to try after I talk with my Rheumatologist and my blood work shows my liver enzymes are back to normal.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ???  BTW I am now 81, and generally in poor health.  I'm 5'8" and weigh 160 lbs.
