Title: New Naltrexone RX ...question
Post by: eye2dry on April 20, 2023, 05:19:16 PM
Hello all.

My old rheumy would never RX Naltrexone but I asked my new Dr if we could try it. Today she sent in to my local pharm 30 days of Naltrexone HCL 50 mg one daily.

Doesn't the dose sound high ? In her office and in our emails I referred to the drug as low dose Naltrexone, she does not use the term low dose.

I read in several internet RX sites...for off label use such as for pain dt inflammatory disease the doses should start out 1.5 mg up to 5 mg.

Anyone else take it like my Dr prescribed.

Thanks
Shelly

She may have misinterpreted your request, or not be familiar with prescribing "off label" for inflammation; that is the standard dose for the treatment of alcohol dependency, which is even higher than that for opioid dependency.

Please discuss it with her before taking the medication. Possibly take some printed information you've downloaded , so she can familiarize herself with standard protocols.

Hi Linda.
Yes, I called back and she does seem not familiar with this. She and her staff checked 5 compounding pharmacies and none made Naltrexone tabs. So she has faxed RX to my neighbor pharmacy on my plan to ask if they could get in Naltrexone suspension for me, apparently it's one drop = 1mg.

WAY WAY TOO HIGH. GO find a support group on Facebook. They can tell you how to use this dosage.....diluted.

OR .. ask you doctor to please prescribe 1mg to be compounded. It's the only other way you can get the right dosage.

Believe me, it's WORTH IT!!!

PS .. 50 mg is the lowest dosage available without compounding it.

Yes....Jazzlover. I had to call my Dr and tell her 50mg was way too much, it was apparent she has not prescribed it. I found the closest compounding pharmacy, spoke to the pharmacist, then emailed my Dr. gave her the info, including pharm. Name and fax number. Insurance will not pay anything on it. I am taking suspension 1mg daily, tastes terrible even though it's suppose to be strawberry. Not sure if I feel any different just yet, if not, I suppose it will then be 2mg daily

I take 4.5 mg naltrexone a day.  50 mg would NOT be Low Dose Naltrexone.

Quote:  Low dose naltrexone should be started at an extremely low dose, such as 1 to 1.5mg/day, and the dosage should be increased by 1mg every week to a maximum of 4.5 mg/day.

50 mg is what the FDA originally approved the "on label" use for. Off-label is typically 4.5 mg or less.

My LDN saga.
After 3 weeks, haven't noticed a difference with 1mg. My doctor just called in a new RX for 3mg daily. I hope I notice something then.
