Title: Too much saliva…what now?
Post by: Nomad on October 02, 2022, 12:58:19 PM
The last few days I seem to have too much saliva. I'm totally baffeled. I'm constantly swallowing. I normally use the Biotene products and other things for my dry mouth. With good results  But now I find that my mouth is WEIRD. It's like I have a little "extra" saliva and keep on having to swallow. Im drinking/sipping my water to help with THIS. Has anyone else ever had such an experience? I have a dentist appt soon and I plan on start with asking the dentist what might be going on.

A little update: Here it is toward the end of the day and it's starting to get uncomfortable. Any worse, and I could drool. Very concerned.  Any thoughts?

You don't mention any other symptoms, but there are several systemic problems that could cause excess salivation, even in Sjogren's. Nausea from any cause, infections of the throat, sinuses or tonsils, systemic infections like tuberculosis, or even severe heartburn. Could any of these be the case?

Once you've adjusted your life to living with the dryness, something like you are experiencing can be even more difficult to deal with than for a "non-sjoggi". We tend to forget to swallow, because there is nothing there to swallow, and it feels like a flood, rather than normal moisture.

If it continues or gets worse, you should probably check with your doctor, incase there is a non-obvious infection somewhere that needs to be treated.

My tongue seems slightly swollen and the dentist noted the roof of my mouth is a little red. She said if it doesn't improve soon, to see an oral surgeon.

Interestingly, there are other posts about this exact thing. But I don't think they ever came back with an answer as to what it was.

If anyone has had this or took part in a previous discussion like this, please comment. There have been a few posts similar to mine over the years.

I took Zyrtec just to "see." The saliva/draining was slightly better and the overall dryness was slightly worse.

If Zyrtec is supposed to help but causes dryness you might want to try taking Xyzal which is another med like Zyrtec. Xyzal is something I have taken for years as needed for itching ordered by my doctor. The side effects are few and it doesn't cause sedation which is really great. Good luck. meirish
