Title: ANYONE HAVE A CANARY
Post by: eye2dry on January 26, 2022, 07:00:50 AM
Hello all.

I've always kept birds. My first canary was at age 3 but I have also had parakeets, a parrot ,finches.
If you have one or have experience with one, please read my story and advise.

Bought canary in December 2020, pet store employees said wow what a singet.loud and constant.
I bought canary and from December 2020 till August of 2021....that's nearly 9 months of loud beautiful singing. So obnoxious I would have to to another room and shut the door to use my phone. I noticed in August it was molding and it kept molding until a few weeks ago. That's like 4 months of molting....too much.

Here is what I am doing for him, what can I be missing ?

It is in a flight cage so he can fly....same cage, nothing new. Same location the whole time,

Cover cage at dusk...cover off at daybreak

Premium bird pellets, premium seeds, baths, fresh greens , egg crumbles and fresh boiled egg, apples, dried crumbled oats, bread, broccoli

Clean cage floor daily, take apart clean cage weekly

Play canary Cada, radio classic music, he is in the great room so he is not lonely, people visible

I was told except for breeding you should not house canaries together unless they are in a fair sized aviary.

What is wrong? I was not told if it was a boy or girl.....buy I assumed bc he sang so well for so long I believed him to be male.

I just noticed this post. So sorry I missed it earlier. I have no notion what to do with a canary. When I was a kid we had a parakeet named Bobbi....WE think is was a girl but put an i on the end of the name so in our mind it was a girl. She was green and we would let her out of the cage every day so she could fly around a little bit. WE didn't let her be out for long. Not very excited about bird doo-doo being all over the place.

Do you have a bird club or any way to get more info about canaries?? Always exciting when a new pet is introduced into a household. IN my old age I would enjoy a dog but can't get outside easily to potty one and I know I would trip over a pet and break a hip. Just enjoy dogs more in my old age. Have a good spring with your feathered friend. meirish

Hello Irish.

Just noticed your post too.

Well, low and behold. Birdie started singing again. I think the lengthing of the days made it sing again. I think even birds have a Circadian rhythm...ha ha.

I have always kept at least one bird in my life, first bird was a canary when I was 3. I have had parrots, parakeets, finches and canaries. I even had chickens for several years.

You should think of a bird for a companion...they are cheerful and active...and cost very little to feed.

I also feed the  the wild birds all year long and especially the hummingbirds.

I guess I am The Bird Lady.

My apartment is too small for any type of a pet. I don't even have room for a fishbowl and a goldfish. I am just packed in this little studio but I have a 9 ft long and almost 5 ft high picture window and on the 4th floor so I love it. Take care. meirish
