Title: Macular Degeneration anyone?
Post by: Carolina on January 28, 2021, 07:41:17 AM
I've just been diagnosed with Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Dry MD in my left eye and Wet MD in my right eye.  I had the first injection in my right eye right after the diagnosis, on Tuesday.

I'm scheduled for 3 more monthly injections, so far.

I'm blown away by this diagnosis.

Sorry to hear hear this Carolina. I guess this goes to show that in spite of all the autoimmune junk we have the age related stuff is still able to find us. Hope these treatments can manage this issue. Good luck. meirish

Very sorry to hear this, and yes, I was diagnosed with early signs of dry AMD in August.   I had no idea and was very shocked and upset.   Optician was very matter-of-fact and breezy about it, which wasn't helpful.

I am still OK to drive, and I try not to think about it all too much.   Am taking lutein and zeaxanthin tablets in the hope they might slow it down.

The only "good" thing about it is that it usually leaves some peripheral vision.   My mother had it (I suspect I inherited the tendency from her), and even into her eighties she did have peripheral vision.

Feel free to pm me about it whenever you like.  x

Sorry to hear you've been diagnosed with macular degeneration.
My mother is 84 and just last year she was diagnosed with it too.
She also takes the same things as you except for the injections.
I have a question....Does your Dr feel it is inherited?
I asked my mom and she doesn't know the answer.

Take care.

Hi Shelley, I don't think anyone can say exactly what causes an individual case of AMD.    However I have looked at all the risk factors, and the only one that seemed to apply to me was the fact that my mother had it.   That doesn't mean to say that you will necessarily inherit it, of course, and I very much hope that you don't.

My 23&Me genetic evaluation showed inheritance for Wet Macular Degeneration from BOTH parents!

Both parents died young (Dad at 27, Mom at 59), both parents were only children, and 3 of 4 grandparents died before 65, so I had no family history of MD.

But clearly my MD is genetic.

I would suggest that you consult a retinal specialist ophthalmologist to follow your Dry MD, Araminta.
