Title: Question: Can people with Sj?grens donate blood/plasma?
Post by: Judes on May 26, 2020, 08:11:17 AM
Hi all,
It's been a while, hope all are hanging in there in these crazy times. I came down with Covid19 virus at the end of March. Symptoms were pretty bad, but I never required hospitalization, thankfully! About 5 weeks later I tested positive for the antibodies and I was curious if someone like me, with sjogrens, can donate plasma? Thanks.

Hi
I've been wondering the same thing.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Canadian Blood Services won't take my blood, not necessarily because of the condition, but because of the medications I use to treat it.

In the case of plasma donation specifically for COVID-19 antibodies, there may be totally different rules, so check with whatever local agency collects blood, or contact one of the COVID centers that have asked for post infection donors.

Last I checked people with Sjogrens can?t donate blood. They don?t know enough about what causes sjogrens and even though they don?t think it can be passed on, they also don?t really know the safety of giving our blood to other people.

Thanks for the responses. When I googled it I got different answers, it mostly said no for auto immune diseases, but found some articles saying rules are changing in some instances. I was kind of wondering if the process of donating could cause problems in itself for someone suffering with sjogrens, it seems the slightest stress to my body causes things to progress. Having this virus certainly hasn't helped either. Thank you, hope you all stay clear of it.

Judes,

So glad that you are okay!  How long were you sick with Covid and was it really the worst thing ever?  Did it cause you to go into a flare and are you completely over it?

Sorry, I have so many questions but my big fear is that I am going to get this and maybe pass it on to someone I love.  Do you have any idea where you might have picked it up?  I live in Illinois and it seems to me that it is really running rampant here.  Some states seem to have very little.  My husband has cancer so I really want to try and keep us both well.

I?m sorry that I can?t answer your questions about blood transfusions.  I think your story is very interesting.  By any chance are you on Plaquinil and do you honestly think it helped at all?  I would love to hear your complete accounting and I?m sure many others would too.  I hope I?m not being too much of an annoyance with all these questions.

Glad you made it through without having to be hospitalized.🤗.

Stay safe and healthy,

Kathy
