I do not believe that they are on the correct path for a cure. Nano-bacteria I believe is the root cause of all AI diseases. Most medical researchers do not believe in it yet they autoclave their tools to get rid of Nano-Bacteria. Like a two part poison, it takes two nano-bacteria to create an auto immune disease. This may be why once you have one AI disease you are more likely to get another AI disease.
Where do Nano bacteria come from? In the lab we have a clue. Cultured bacteria colonies when attacked with antibiotics as a protection will ball up their DNA into a nano-bacteria and loose the rest of the cell material as a matter of survival.
When conditions are right, the nano-bacteria will regenerate into bacteria. In the mean time they will remain alive by using the mitochondrial DNA in Gene 6 & 7 to reproduce as any good parasite would. This of course damages the host cell so our immune system will attack the host cell.
Because of my belief in this process I take Acetyl-L-Carnitine to repair the damage and R-Lipoic Acid to remove the debris from the repair to limit reinfection.
What set me on this path was a number of articles in a variety of magazines. Popular Mechanics - A new Bioweapon brief 1963, Popular Science "The Cell from heck" 1996?, Readers Digest - The cure for ageing 1999?, Discover magazine "The insanity virus" 2003? I have question marked the day as some memories are slipping. There was a Nexus magazine (Australia) article on AI disease that related how they were created and what nano-bacteria are needed to create which AI diseases. After that article I was no longer able to find the magazine in the USA and they refused to mail me any more copies.
I believe that this is why some of the long term low dose anti bacterial trials seem to work.
I don't think a cure is likely, especially since the research seems to be following what's been done in RA - the biologicals. Those are treatments, not a cure.
What Joe says is very interesting. I want to know more about "nano-bacteria", I've never heard of it. Joe might be right, I wish the articles he remembers were available.
The road to a cure started with the human genome project.
I say that because the profiling of healthy DNA vs the genetic mutations associated with autoimmunity is what has led to current the path of treating/blocking certain immune pathways to alter disease pathogenesis (immunomodulatory interventions). This has lead to the current era of biologics.... the immune pathways and interactions involved with Sjogrens has just taken a bit longer to solve/prove out, as heterogeneity of the patient population is pretty unique and varied.
Beyond biologics, there are novel proteins and peptides that have demonstrated efficacy in restoring basal tearing and increasing lacrimal function while reducing inflammation characteristic of Sjogrens. (i.e. the Lacritin Clinical trials)
I think they are on the right path as far as developing a systemic treatment (based on what we know right now about medicine/human cell biology/genetics); human trials are proving that out right now.
As far as a cure, probably not until genetic therapeutics (i.e. CRISPR) become matured, trialed, productionized, and commercially licensed for use. Likely 15 years out.
That said, I think interventions coming about are going to make this disease a lot more livable until an actual gene therapy is realized.

I agree - medicine is a business and producing a magic bullet to manage diseases is more profitable than finding a cure.
I also don't have a lot of hope for the Human Genome Project - although I will be thrilled to have to eat my hat if they do find a cure. Epigenetics plays a critical role and has implicated in Autoimmune Disease although currently most of the research has been in cancer and not Autoimmune Disease.
Just taking a look at the experiences of myself and others on this board with doctors....I would say no cure anytime soon. Sad for me to say that as my daughters and grand-daughter are all showing signs of autoimmune issues. Not enough research being done. If the disease were more "visible", maybe it would get more attention. Just my opinion.
I have also been reading a lot on the DNA and mitochondria.

I think with the great progress being made in gene sequencing technology and it becoming as cheap as $1000 per person and similar progress by IBM watson and similar products, i am quite hopeful that we can expect a cure (or good treatment) in the next 5 years.
How about never?
I think we all have a lot of damage from chemicals in our environment and nothing is being done to address that. Then add to that, all the viruses and bacteria from insects and ticks, which can begin the entire auto-immune process as well.
I have little optimism with our medical community regarding cures for ANYTHING.

I voted...but do not believe it will even be in 20 years. I am NOT a scientist. I believe auto immune diseases need much more research before they start in on each one. It's a most curious condition for your own body to attack itself. I don't claim to understand it. That's what I would challenge scientists to do. ccc
Managing the immune system (and genes) is like Whack-a-Mole. Push on one part and all the other parts will pop up or down or out and then 'shake it all about'.
The brain, the immune system, our genetics are infinitely complex.
That is not to say that perhaps one day there won't be major progress.
But these systems are interwoven and complex.
Treatments may be refined and applied, however, with increasing frequency.

I think 10 years optimistically and 20 years realistically.
When learning some immunology recently, I was wondering why immunologists just don't look physically look at the cells with a microscope and see what exactly what is going on.
The answer is that until recently a powerful enough microscope with a high enough resolution has not been available.

Personally I don?t think we understand the complexity and until we do that we have no chance of curing it. 20 years is optimistic.
Our bodies evolved to survive long enough to at least reproduce and raise children to independence in an environment (both physical, cultural and microbial) that is nothing like what we have today. Its not just the changes in the physical environment but the cultural changes over the years have made even greater disruptions to what our genetics evolved to address. Maybe over millennia we will find a new ?balance? with our new environment.
The immune system is incredibly complex. It has been shown that there are even windows of time in our early lives where exposure to a microbe/parasite or stressor that provokes an immune response is incredibly positive but if the exposure happens after the window is closed the opposite can be the result. We do not know enough to come up with a cure.
I answered 20 years because the question was about "a cure". I think we may see better treatments in about 5-10 years, without there being a cure. I define "cure" as a removal of the illness - i.e. whatever the underlying causes of the disease are no longer occurring. Or that there is a preventative, like a vaccine, that means the disease will not occur.
I did not answer the poll, as I believe we may see some progress, but not recovery in the next 20 years.
Honestly, I don't think the medical community is interested in cures but long term treatments they can make a lot of money on. Sorry to be so negative. I also think it 's very complex with auto immune diseases. If any thing, the alternative medicine people will be onto something before main stream medicine. But, there is always a little hope. Who knows, some researcher may stumble upon something that helps. I think genetics is a major contributor to start off and it goes from there for us.

This article is in part why I made the earlier statement... these findings would not have been possible without the preceding research.
My guess is it is good news for humanity, not necessarily humans living today. I think many diseases will be easily managed or cured with 100 years from now. Too many advances in too many fields to not figure these things out...eventually. Small steps along the way. In the scope of human history, 100 years is not much time. For those of us that won't be here in 60 years, we are only in this life for a short time anyway, carpe diem.
