Title: Itchy ears
Post by: Kristina09 on April 09, 2018, 08:08:17 AM
Does anyone else get intensely itchy ear canals? I don?t know if it?s a symptom of sjogrens but I get so itchy and they feels like they are inflamed. It will be one or both with no other allergy symptoms. I read somewhere it could be an early sign of a flare. If anyone has experienced this, what do u do for relief?

Yes!   My ear canals get dry and flaky and itchy.

I wear hearing aids and sometimes the combination of the little plastic domes in my ears, plus the itchy ear canals is unbearable.

I sometimes put cortisone cream in my ear canals with a q-tip, or baby oil, at night.

I have to remember, and the list of 'stuff' I do at night to deal with my conditions sometimes just overwhelms me and I forget about my ear canals, until it gets too miserable, and then I treat them again.

Good luck, Kristina.

Hi K,
I see this query periodically...and honestly...it is the most curious aggravation for us.  I say "us" as it does affect quite a few.  I get samples of a cream from my derma who knows nothing about SjS.  I'm usually burning (freezing) something off my neck, face etc...and always beg for more of these samples of Halog.  It is a corticosteroid.  I have asked her for an Rx..and she won't give it to me because of the price.  4 to 5 of the tiny little tubes can easily last over 6 months.  Likely closer to 9 months.  Last month she was out and gave me a compound she gives patients as a courtesy.  I use it...but it is nothing like the Halog.  It is Triamcinitone.  0.1% ointment.

I should have said this first, I do not have mine in the ear canal.  I have it on my auricle.  I would tell my ENT AND the derma you wanted something for your ear canal unless it's Jergens, Cetaphil, baby oil, etc.  None of those things takes that horrid itching away.

You can't do this in your ear, but I have had this place on my ear itch so badly that I pinch it...HARD...trying to kill the sensation.

One other thing...if you put something IN that ear canal, you need to wash it out daily...I do that all in my ear each time I put my ointment/cream in my outer ear.
    Good luck dear....

Coconut oil on a q-tip can be soothing.
