I was diagnosed with Sjogren's 11 years ago and this is the first time I am having tooth problems. In February I had a tooth crack and my dentist filled it. Then, the tooth beside it was ultra sensitive, like the nerve would "zing" me when I had anything cold. The dentist decided I needed a root canal and then had to pull the tooth. I plan to have an implant.
Then, one of my capped teeth on the bottom was Zinging. He prepared it for a crown. I'm down about $3000 at this point and the next tooth is zinging. All of these teeth are on one side of my mouth.
When I try to talk to the dentist about Sjogren's and my teeth, his eyes glaze over. It's so frustrating. I got a 10 day anti-biotic from my ARNP today.
Is this my new normal? Does anyone have suggestions?
Kim
Hi Kim
2 years ago I spent about $7000 on my teeth. I know your pain. I suggest you find a dentist that knows what Sjogrens is. Also try to get some GC Tooth Mousse Plus. Dentists normally sell it. What toothpaste do you use? I switched to Biotine dry mouth and together with the mousse and a really good dentist, knock on wood, I'm much better.
Hope this helps.
Jo 😀
it may not be your teeth. Google trigeminal neuralgia.
Dear DryGuy,
In addition to pain and zinging from actual dental problems (and I have had many) I have periods when my teeth and jaw (on the right side) hurt/throb/zing for no apparent reason.
With my history of abscesses and cracked teeth with infections, I am very 'sensitive' to messages from my teeth, to say the least.
However, I have to say that I think that jaw and tooth pain are, for me, one of the symptoms of a flare of my immune system.
I don't think it's Trigeminal Neuralgia, as I understand that condition. That condition is so terribly painful that it requires immediate attention. Just touching the face on the side affected causes agony.

I wish you well on your dental adventure. When I was first diagnosed with Sjogren's I began having dental check ups and cleaning three times a year. Now I have settled for twice a year.

My post on Trigeminal Neuralgia came from my own experience. I had extreme pain in one tooth , sometimes electrical shock, upon eating anything cold. Neither a root canal nor pulling that tooth and replacing it with an implant helped the pain in that tooth...a tooth that wasn't a real tooth. A dentist and an oral surgeon offered no help. Finally my neurologist diagnosed TN, referred me to a pain management doctor who implanted a pain blocker in that area of my mouth. I have been pain free for 6 months.
My symptoms sounded a lot like Williak's . I submit that TN is one of those options that should be kept in mind.
Hi Kim,
You're not taking vitamin B complex by any chance, are you? The zinging problem was also making my life heck. Dentist earned a big package from me for treating multiple teeth problems (also root canal), but never mentioned vitamin B complex could be causing oversensitive nerve response, especially from vitamin b6 - which is often super overdosed in the complex.
Even now when I try just 1/2 a tablet twice a week, the horrid zinging returns.
Good luck!
Thank you for the suggestions. It will try the biotine toothpaste. I googled dentists with Sjogren's experience and find one in Little Rock. It's a bit too far. I am going to call a dental school and see if the know of a good dentist that has experience with this disease. I don't take B vitamins.
