Title: Hydroxychloroquine and Statins
Post by: Poppy on August 01, 2017, 11:24:28 AM
Hi everyone, my GP has prescribed Statins for  me as apparently I'm at risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 yrs. I also take Hydroxychloroquine and he tells me that there is risk of interaction between these drugs, but then tells  me not to worry about it! I would like your thoughts on this.

For each drug and supplement that I take, I check for: Drug interactions, counter indications, and Side effects.

I do not take statins. I take very high doses of omega-3. My cholesterol is very low. So when the Doctor says I should be on statins I know that s/he has not read my file to see my cholesterol numbers.

Personally, I will never take statins .. no matter my "risk" ..

Do your homework on this one.

Hi

Hydroxychloroquine can be tough on its own to the liver.   Statin drugs (and many other drugs) can also negatively impact the liver.   I have been on Crestor 10mg for 15 years and plaquenil for 12 and all my liver tests are fine.   All drugs have plusses and minuses .  You have to make trade offs..based on your risk profile.  Your doctor should be able to discuss it with you so you can make an informed decision.
