Title: Colonoscopy prep made me ill
Post by: Way2dry on March 30, 2017, 09:18:45 AM
I was scheduled for a colonoscopy last week but had to cancel it.  The prep I used was Suprep and I not only vomited when I took my second dose, but had severe vomiting 8 hrs. later.  When I drank my first dose, it felt like my tongue shriveled up and I had a constant burning fullness in my stomach which wasn't relieved until I vomited hours later.  It also made my gerd & dryness worse for the last week.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Are there other preps that would be better for someone with Sjogren's?

I dread even thinking about going through this again.

ah sorry to hear this--I have not done this yet, even tho I am at the age, because I do fear side effects from the whole thing. I haven't even gone to eye doctor for a couple years because the chemicals and the light they put in my eyes gives me pain for better part of a week and my head in that little dish hurts my cervical spine issue. Thanks for sharing this because I hadn't even considered that the prep could also hurt me.  (I am to a point in age and have been dealing with chronic pain for so long that I have decided I don't want to treat a potentially lethal problem if it comes up because there is always fall out and I don't think I could handle much more of a deficit than what I already have).

Please keep us posted on things and maybe someone else will have gone thru same thing and can shed light.

did they acknowledge to you that it wasn't unheard of? or is it rare did they say?

I know suprep is what most doctors use, I know that's what I had. Suprisingly my sister in law up in Tennessee was given just an over the counter laxative medication as prep for her colonoscopy that cleaned her out. This was in pill form. I was much puzzled by this, but maybe you can ask your doctor?

Wendyoh & Tharrell - Thanks for your responses.

I thought my problem was due to severe dryness from Sjogren's along with the osmotic nature of the prep.  Looking over some older posts here, it doesn't seem like Sjoggies have more than the usual discomfort.  I recently found out my immune system is destroying my thyroid.  It's possible something else is being damaged and that caused my reaction...I'll ask my Dr. when I see her.

Wendyoh - sorry to hear about your problems.  Don't let my bad experience scare you off.  I think most people tolerate it ok.  If you're concerned maybe you could talk to you Dr. first.  Good luck!

Way, I understand what you mean. When I had to get colonoscopies and colon surgery, I don't think I quite had SJS yet, so the preps were ok.

There is a Miralax prep that a lot of doctors use. Some are very picky about their preps but maybe since you got sick, they will consider alternative preps. Sorry you had to go through that.  It's a good warning for the rest of us though. Thank you for sharing this. The next scope I have to get I will definitely insist on a non-osmotic prep!

That's what my sister in law took! Mirelax! Not in pill form obviously! Thanks Deb! My sister in law is highly sensitive to any and all medicines, she can't even take tylenol, but she tolerated the mirelax ok!

I looked up the prep you had and it contained sodium, potassium ad magnesium. I used another product that is also a large amount but it is a wash for the colon and the cramping is not bad. In fact one has to almost sit on the toilet while drinking it. Most people have a timer and a book cause yoyo have to drink the 8 ounces every so many minutes. You do this early evening and then about 3- am or so and also take some pills about 7 PM the night before. This product contains polypropylene glycol and is called Golytely. It is a powder in a gallon jug and you add tap water to it, shake and put in refrig the day before so it is good and cold I do think that most products do leave us feeling pretty "crappy" because we haven't eaten much and we get a little weak during the process. I find that pepsi and soda crackers really makes me feel better. A combination of the sugar, caffeine and carbohydrates plus some salt. Good luck. Irish
