My thyroid failed four years ago and since then I have had quite painful muscle joint and muscle pain. Is there a connection? I can only take NSAIDS sparingly. They hurt my stomach and I only have one kidney. My Rheumatologist has me doing dark sweet cherry smoothies for osteoarthritis. I take Life Extension Curcurim but, at times I really flare up. Guess I mostly wonder if anyone had their pain increase with Hashimotos?

I have had hypothyroid since 1989 when diagnosed and was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2006. I have been having "arthiritis" like pain since the nearly 1970's and have it pretty much all the time in some part of my body. Sometimes it isn't too bad and other times it keeps me down in my recliner.
The only time I can say that there was some correlation was when I was in so much pain that I could hardly walk or move. I thought I would end up in a wh/ch and it just didn't seem to want to go away. It just happened that I was due for my thyroid blood work and low and behold my TSH was 14+.nDoc increased my blood work and within 2-3 weeks my pain was gone.
Now, I didn't know I had Hashimotos at the time but it showed me that my thyroid could cause joint and muscle pain. I now have normal TPO or blood work for Hashimotos so it is in a non active stage right now. But, I still ache just like I used to and actually it has been worse the past couple of years. Soooo, this tells me that I have no clue what my Hashimotos does to me. I have 5 diagnosed autoimmune diseases so it is hard to say. Also, I have been on IVIG for 10 years and I still ache. Thanks, Irish! I know it is so hard to know what is going on. Of course I throw aging in with the autoimmune. Ugh! I am due for thyroid blood work soon so we will see.

ohiolady, I sure wish I had an answer to your question b/c I also have Hashimoto's and think that it sometimes gives symptoms of fatigue and joint pain. I have Sjogrens, Hashimoto's and RA, so it's hard to tell what is going on sometimes. I know for me when my thyroid is running too low, I get bad brain fog, fatigue and depression. When the weather is bad or I eat wheat or nightshades, I have joint pain and fatigue. It' just really hard to sometimes know what is flaring up!
I haven't been diagnosed with Hashimoto, but have hypo thyroid. I would probably have to ask for the test at the clinic.
I don't even know what they do if we have it. I know I'm not much help.

Susan, The test for Hashimotos is the thyroperoxidase blood test. It is called TPO. The thing is that when we have Hashimotos the treatment is thyroid medication. Most of the time people with Hashimotos start out with hypothyroidism and are put on medication and the Hashimotos is discovered down the road.
My one son has Hashimotos and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago. His TPO was found elevated some years later and ignored by the specialist. I finally took him to my immunologist and he had terribly severe Hashimotos. He is on Methotrexate 25 mgm once a week for about 3 years now and his T
PO count is coming down but is still elevated.
It really is hard to tell when we have Hashimotos symptoms cause most of us have other autoimmune diseases so everything is hard to differentiate. Irish
