Title: Blood work??? What's this stuff mean?
Post by: Stormys101 on August 30, 2016, 11:05:50 PM
Ok People
My doctor didn't say much about my blood work and I am going to UCSF for a lip biopsy soon.
My blood work came back negative for Sjogrens I guess? This is why we are doing a biopsy.
But my blood work keeps coming back LOW ON.....
ANION GAP 3.0
BUN/CREAT 8.0
MVP 6.2

THEY ARE HIGHLIGHTED AND MARKED LOW

The doctor never told me what they mean. I looked up some stuff on the net and it seems to be blood cancer possibly?

Does ANYONE know if these things being low could be indicators for Sjogrens still?
Thank you guys for any helpful answers in advance :)

I have to tell you that it is not recommended looking up all these blood tests, etc as then a person jumps to a conclusion that something is wrong. Many of us on this site can tell you from experience that research everything will almost drive you to drink. Many times, and I mean many times, the blood reports that come back are totally misinterpreted by the patient when they read all this stuff and causes great distress and worry.

I can say this because as a registered nurse I used to do the same thing. It is not worth it because there are so many sites on the internet that give false information. My dermatopathologist told me there are only 2 sites on the web that give accurate information and I have forgotten which ones they are.

Many times a blood test is done using a different method from what you are comparing it to online. This can totally change the meaning of the test. There are many different testing methods for almost every blood test being done. Every hospital and clinic do not use the same method. I hope that you can relax and not worry because until you hear the words from the doctor you will not know the truth about the test results. That is pretty much the way it plays out.

Stay calm and be patient so that you don't stress yourself out and feel worse. Good luck. Irish

I agree 100% with Irish. There are several reasons I would recommend letting your doctor demystify all your lab work, the first one being; he knows what he ordered and why! I've said it before, but it bears repetition: one blood test rarely stands on its own as being helpful, they are all connected in ways we may not understand, and your doctor is in a much better position to see the whole picture.

Having said that, and hoping to settle your fears a bit, the Anion Gap is within norms for most labs, which range 3-11.

The Bun:Creat ratio more often results in a two digit result (8:1) but I can understand the single digit response when the Creat is extablished as 1, and the norm is 10:1 so yes, it is moderately low, which can result from many things, the most innocent being dehydration or a high protein diet.

The mean platelet volume (the only blood test I can think of near the MVP you recorded) is usually referred to as MPV, with norms of 7.5-11.7 and is very commonly decreased in people with autoimmune disease. It can also be lowered by viral infections, anemia or recent blood loss or excessive bruising.

Thank you :)

I was a little freaked out BC Those things have been low on most my tests and the Doctor never said anything about it. I guess if he's worrie he will say something! I have a couple different types of doctors now so one of them will see it or explain it soon enough I guess! :)
Have a Good Day
Thanx again

THANKS TO IRISH AND LINDA---I never could understand, follow, make sense of the blood tests indicated.  Now I have permission to ignore them.  THX..............c3

And you are being reasonable to ask the doctor "I noticed these were marked low - what does that suggest to you?"  He may have a working theory, or it may be these are variable enough that one low reading is not important (that varies by test).

Asking about a test results is better than worrying about it, but remember each test is really part of a big picture.  Think of it like a jigsaw puzzle.  Sitting alone, these test have many different interpretations (a blue puzzle piece might represent the sky, water, painted wall, etc) and its real meaning is dependent on its relationship with other tests.  I am also a retired nurse and remember looking at Hemaglobin A1C which was 10. something - very high.  I was concerned until I saw that she had a previous reading of 14. something.  For her this test was good, where as for me, it would be the sign of something seriously wrong.  Sometimes you will hear - yes, this one is high, but this other test is normal so it is ok.  Sounds inconsistent, but it is not.  I do believe that asking questions beats worrying.  I also think you need to trust your doctor when he/she says it is ok - or get a different doctor.
