Title: Mobic?
Post by: susanep on March 24, 2016, 11:55:31 PM
I Just wanted to ask if Mobic is similar to ibuprophen? My rhuemy always wants me to take Mobic, and I have some, but when I look it up it seems to talk of greater chances of it doing damage to the heart. I know some of you take it so maybe you can share some thoughts or/and info with me.

It is also anti-inflammatory, but it is stronger.  I have been taken it as needed for years and for me it works.  Remember all medications, even herbals have side effects.  It is always "risk versus gain."  For the past several years and even right now it is working with no side effects.

with any supplement or medication, always check for drug interactions, Side effects, or counter indications. People tend to have rules of thumb that they go by when making decisions and recommendations. This type of double check is always useful. A concerned Pharmacist once question a drug mom was Rx'd on calling the doctors office it was suggested that she take something else instead to avoid complications.

I take Mobic occasionally as needed.  It lasts for 24 hours.  Ibuprofen makes me swell up.  Mobic does that as well, but not as bad.  It's a good anti-inflammatory.

I most recently took it after surgery on my finger when I had trouble keeping the swelling down.  Mobic made a very noticeable difference in the level of swelling.  And I was happy to leave it behind when my finger was better.

GM Susan,
I am trying to recall....in decades...when a dr. initially dxed my aches, pains, stiffness, etc...I guess I was at least 40...so let's say nearly 35 years ago.  I was told I had Chronic Muscle Spasms.  I did the PT AND...was given NSAIDs.  At that time of my life I had barely seen a dr but for having babies.  My body seemed "frozen" it was so stiff.  The drugs were wonderful.  I say drugS as a few weeks on one, then wouldn't work anymore.  Again, remember...I knew nothing about any of it.  Trusted the doc.  After all..he was in THE Houston Medical Center.

Well...when all said and done I had collected at least four different NSAIDS...and was directed to interchange them.  I did...dutifully so...for at least 3 years.  I was going to exercise classes at least three days a week as well....because ...remember...was still in 40s  :).

About 8 to 10 years later I had my first severe gut pain.  Now I had suffered bouts of "colon evacuations"  for years..but infrequent.  But this?  I was doubled over.  My husband had GERD..(we were on a cruise) and he gave me his meds...saying it was GERD.

Got home..and of course the gastro had to do the endoscopy--and we saw the hole in m stomach simultaneously.  Needless to say I couldn't speak:  he said "NSAID ulcer."  It had been so many years, I had forgotten I had even taken the drugs.  An NSAID ulcer is differentiated by the edges.  Good news--medication sealed it.  Had to take it for a year tho.  Bottom line, no more NSAIDs.

Now...with SjS...my rheumy AND internist look at this ONE time occurrence and all drugs I take as the one they ask about EACH time I see either of them.  That happened decades ago.  As to the length of time taking them and having the ulcer break thru, he told me I had to have had some type of symptom as that spot had to have been eroding for a long time.  Of course, at the time, I could recall some minor stomach discomfort.

Extended Family:  My daughter LIVES on OTC NSAIDs.  I can only say Rx NSAIDs must be stronger than OTC ones...such as Mobic.  Do you have a gastro?  Periodic endoscopies are relatively simple and inexpensive.  I would highly recommend such procedures if you are getting ready to use them long term.

JUST MY TAKE.

I've been on mobic for about 5 years now.   It helps with the muscle and joint pains.  I tolerate NSAIDs well, so I've had no issues with it.  I believe there are two doses 7.5 mg and 15 mg.  If you are interested in it, you could start with the lower dose, and only increase to the higher one if you don't get enough relief.

I also take LDN (low dose naltrexone) for the muscle pain, as the mobic doesn't handle that well enough.
