Afternoon everyone :-\
For those of you that don't know......I don't have a SJS DX yet......my chief complaint is CHRONIC dry mouth. So until I am either DX'd with SJS or it is ruled out at my next appointment 4/1 I am trying to deal with dry mouth myself. I have started using Biotene toothpaste, and I ALWAYS take something to drink with me everywhere I go!! If that is not possible, I bought ACT dry mouth lozenges (was looking for the Biotene lozenges but all I could find was the ACT lozenges).
At first the lozenges worked like a charm!! But the last 3 times I have had to use them.....by the time the lozenge has fully dissolved my mouth is already starting to get dry AGAIN!!! Used to be one lozenge would moisten my mouth for 30-45 minutes. But not anymore.
I am running out of ideas......and I still have 10 days until my follow up appointment with my rheumy!! And I am not even certain I will get relief then......this is getting really old......really fast!!! :(
The most effective lozenges for me are called MedActive - pricey, but they really are long-lasting.
I get them through Amazon.
I hope you soon get some relief!
Also, mighteaflow gum is the best
for moisturizing.
Thank so much!!!! 8)
Will be sure and check out Amazon!!
Appreciate it!!
;D
I have no SJS diagnosis and chronic dry mouth is my only complaint so I feel your pain. I use the xylimelts. Sometimes they help more than other times. I'm not sure of anything else. Even sugarless gum seems to dry me out.
The ACT lozenges have Xylitol in them so not sure if the Xylimelts would be much different......but you never know right??? lol
:)
On the plus side Xylitol changes the action of the bacteria in the mouth, (Dr Juan Yepes) Someone suggested that I just get xylitol at Wal-Mart and use it - I bought some but it's still sitting there.
Good intentions and novel ideas sometimes look less good the next day
Did you ever try Slippery Elm throat lozenges? Singers use this.
Annette
That is a MAJOR plus!!!
I have never even heard of Slippery Elm Lozenges. But I intend to find out........ 8)
Thanks for the info!! :D
Xylimelts. Available at Amazon if you can't find locally
thanks so much!!!
I get my xylimelts at my local drugstore and I get coupons from my dentist. I manage with one at night...don't want to use any more than I have to. They really make a difference for me.
Please remember to use the Amazon or smiles.Amazon links on our home page http://www.sjogrensworld.org/ and help maintain this site in the process.
You have dry mouth only?
I also have dry mouth only but it's been here for a little over a week now. It's only getting worse, but gradually. I'm only 21.... I have no other symptoms either. Does this sound like you? I want to get to the bottom of what it is.
yes so far I only have dry mouth. I do have joint/muscle pain but I just deal with it. I do get sores in the corner of my mouth quite frequently and my lips are dry/cracked quite often too. But CHRONIC dry mouth is my chief complaint.
I have swallowing problems too. I get choked/strangled very easily. And I wouldn't dare attempt to eat anything without something to drink!! And eating dry foods like donuts, breads and things like that are almost impossible to get down.
I haven't been DX'd yet I go back on 4/1 to go over blood work results and possibly for a lip biopsy so I am not on any meds for SJS/dry mouth. I have found that using Biotene toothpaste helps a lot and sugar free hard candies and sugarless gum helps too. I am using ACT dry mouth lozenges but they are not working as well as they first did.
Best of luck to you!!
