Title: slow wifi
Post by: Joe S. on September 07, 2015, 11:01:11 AM
I believe that most of us connect with wifi to our internet. A few years ago, my connection was fast and uninterrupted. Then it started  running slow and dropping connection. You may have experienced this also. After some research I found the reason and a solution.
The reason is too many devices interfering with the same frequency 2.4 Ghz. Wireless phone, microwave oven, other wireless devices, and your cell phones. Wireless printers, roku, Directv, some DVD players and some TVs.

The solution is to get a new router that works at 5Ghz. The one that I got is a triband with all kinds of bells and whistles.  A 5Ghz router can cost as little as $30. Your streaming videos will flow better. Your games will be fast again. It is nice. I have the ability to add a network printer and hard drive with my new router.

I hope this information helps some of you.

I am still putsing with getting things running the way I want. Last night I learned that the DirecTV has 3 channels running that it is using. Roku uses one. 3 wireless phones, 2 cell phones. The wifi printer does not want to work properly yet. At least I do not have any gaming systems. A tablet, winbook, and a laptop. So about a total of 13 devices.

the new router has two USB ports that are for sharing, like a printer or a hard drive. This may be good for backups.

Some device s are not compatible with 5Ghz. However, there are some routers that can run both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz at the same time. Not sure what internet company you have but I know that twc has router that has this implemented.

Joe, I am an old electronically challenged grandma and I am getting sick of all this electronic stuff. My kids gave me a smart phone so I could test. Now that is a handy little item, but the phone itself is harder t dial out on then my old cell phone. I do like some of the news apps, but not into all this other stuff. I don't sit for hours and I don't play games. I would rather read a real book.

I had to buy a new TV and waiting for my fiberoptic cable company to come and fix the set top and hook up my TV. Now I will have to learn how to use another TV. It is never ending. My brain got overloaded on electronics about 3 years prior to my hubby passing away. I think the stress from my illness and his illness fried my brain. Don't know if I will ever get any of my brains back again. It is like I am just to exhausted to dig in and concentrate anymore. Good for you Joe, for hanging in there and being interested. You can help us all out that way and we appreciated it. Irish

After 8 hours I got my printer to work and an external hard drive shared with in my secure wifi network. I did not get it to share an external DVD player. Every bit helps.

trouble with YouTube and a review of my new error log indicates internet issues.
