Title: osteo calm
Post by: Winnie on May 21, 2015, 08:11:03 PM
Has anyone used this supplement for calcium?  I bought some and it has magnesium and vitamin d in it also.  I wanted to use it for constipation too.  I have read mixed reviews on it and you can have side effects.  Now I am not sure if I should start it. :(

NOW Bone Calcium

Bone Calcium is a unique nutritional supplement formulated with calcium-rich, high collagen Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCH).MCH is the actual form of calcium found naturally in bone tissue. It provides the actual form of calcium found naturally in bone tissue. It provides both the organic and inorganic constituents found in the skeletal structure. It also contains Vitamin D and trace minerals to help support calcium utilization.

If you are looking to build bone, you need to take the calcium with Microcystaline Hydroxyapatie.  It is the actual form of calcium found naturally in bone tissue.

MCH is discussed in the book listed below:

The Whole-Body Approach to Osteoporosis: How to Improve Bone Strength and Reduce Your Fracture Risk (The New Harbinger Whole-Body Healing Series) by R. Keith McCormick

I have no idea about this supplement, but I just remembered that I recently read an article that states that taking calcium is not always a good idea. The info cited made sense and it made me feel a lot better about the fact that I only took one calcium supplement tab a day.

Maybe between all of us we can find out more about this subject. I do know that many people are advised not to take calcium as it can cause kidney stones. It might be that they are thinking that increased intake of foods containing calcium is better than a supplement. Maybe we can find out the answer to this. Irish

Lighthouse33 and Irish

I did see at the health store the NOW brand of calcium and it was allergy friendly which is what I need but when I looked on the back, the size of the pill to swallow was HUGE!  I doubt that I could swallow it.  That is what made me look at the liquid calcium and BONUS - magnesium friendly for the bowels!!  I get to see my gastro on Wednesday so I will hold off taking it until then.  I will have to check into the book.  Sounds good!  I am also dairy free so getting the calcium that I need is difficult.  All I find is: eat more leafy green vegetables which some of it I have never heard or eaten before.  Thanks for the input.  Maybe we can find out more information.

Just wanted you to know that I made a home made soup with onions, carrots, drained canned baked bean, sausage, celery, chicken broth and some turnip greens. It was so darned good. Add your spices and whatever else you want.

I am wanting to add the greens as they have the iron and calcium and are so good for us. You can buy the packages of frozen spinach if you want. Doesn't get wasted so is cheaper in the long run. I used the powdered chicken seasoning that is sodium free. It comes in a green box with 8 envelopes in it and is really good. Irish

I finally went to the gastro this week and he had no suggestions for calcium except not to quit it.  He said I could try a little magnesium with it although my numbers are normal.  Quick appointment that left me feeling like he thinks I don't need to come anymore.  Anyway, I exchanged my osteo calm for a cheaper product more balanced for my needs.  MRM liquid cal-mag-zinc.  I looked again at the NOW brand and just didn't think I could swallow them.  I have checked out the book by Keith McCormick and will start reading it this weekend.  I have been walking a mile daily providing good weather.  We will see how it goes.  Irish, the recipe does sound good.  I will have to google leafy green vegetable recipes and start experimenting.

Thanks!!

Winnie,

I am not sure if I am suggesting the same product that you have/had...CALM. The Calm product that I am referencing is a tall plastic bottle that has a powdered magnesium mixture. You mix
it with water or juice, etc. It tastes like lemonade. It definitely helps with constipation. It is my go-to!!

I also use a supplement that my G.I. Doc (a motility specialist) suggested called: Iberogast. It is a mixture with several supplements & is a proprietary blend made by a German company. I bought mine on Amazon.com.  It is a bit pricey, but works very well also. Between my Calm & my Iberogast...I keep my system functioning. The Iberogast is a liquid that is also added to water, juice, etc.

I, like you cannot handle the huge horse pills. I don't purchase any kind of pill unless I can see the size  ???

Good Luck!

Sjodry

I was going to take osteocalm which is the maker of Calm.  Calm only has magnesium but osteocalm is calcium and magnesium combined.  I will need to look into the iberogast.  Thanks!

There are other brands that offer calcium with MCH.  These are all available on Amazon:

Jarrow Formulas Bone-up - (6 per day (they are the smaller pills)

Bio Nutritional Osteo Gest - 180 Capsules

Anabolic Laboratories, Osatate Elemental Calcium 225mg, 100 Tablets

Calcium Bone Maker Complex

Hmmmm, I will have to ask my endo about this one. He just upped my daily supplement of oyster calcium to 1500 mg a day (as I remain slightly hypocalcemic)

I found some info on this product as far as reviews in this site:

consumerhealthdigest.com/bone-support-reviews/natural-vitality-osteo-calm.html

Now why on earth osteo calm has to have sugar added to it escapes my comprehension.

I might very well look into that book.

I take Bone Up. They have one that is three a day. However, I take only two. This is because recent studies indicate a concern about taking too much calcium.  My doctor said this was ok, because I take a good multi that has magnesium and vitamin K, and I supplement with D3. The Bone Up has all these things , plus more...good products known to potentially help prevent osteo. However, it might have too much calcium.

I need to call my doctor because he wanted to look at it further. I definitely have concerns about osteo. so, I need to optimize my supplements for prevention.

Don't forget that vitamin K has been strongly indicated as helping to prevent osteoporosis.

I also take bio identical hormones and try to exercise.  Honestly, I'm going through Herculian efforts to walk and/or use the elliptical now and then. But, I think it's important.

There has been some discussion about Strontium being helpful. I'm going to check into it.

Sadly, my rheumatologist knows nothing nada zilch about the latest info re vitamins potentially helping prevent osteoporosis. I have a different doc interested in these things.

Magnesium has been known to help constipation, muscle tension and insomnia.
I'm curious about the Iberogast! More to ask the Dr. About!

Oh my goodness! I just went to order Dr. McCormick's book on my Kindle and a msg. popped up that I already had it in my archive.  I knew it seemed familiar.  I'm so happy it was mentioned here.  I don't know what happened. It's like a nice, fun gift. :)
