Title: Bloating , help
Post by: Gigi on March 10, 2015, 09:46:36 PM
I've been on 5 mg of prednisone for a long time. I'm so bloated and have gained a lot of weight. Can a low dose cause this? I'm so bloated it hurts. I'm going to quit taking it but I'm not sure it's the cause. Any ideas ? Or anythg to help the bloating ?

Thanks
T

I don't know just what your bloating is like, but there are times that bloating is not just a simple little issue. Bloating or retention of fluid could be related to the prednisone or it could be related to some other more serious autoimmune issue.

Do not stop your prednisone cold turkey as it can be dangerous to do so. I think it would be wise for you to see your doctor about the prednisone and its possible relationship to the fluid retention. He will probably want to do some blood work to check for other problems that can develop. This is not normal from what I can discern in your post. Hope your can get this resolved. Irish

Is your bloating all over, or is your stomach the main place where the bloating is happening?  They might have different causes.

My bloating was caused by bile reflux. Perhaps an endoscopy could shed some light?

My bloating makes me look like I'm 7 months pregnant . It is painful too. I have the Autimmune hep antibody but the last time my liver panel was checked , the numbers looked good so they just dismissed it.

Idk what to do anymore....

My bloating is usually caused by yeast overgrowth. I have taken various tinctures and concoctions to "kill off" the yeast-- things like "ParaFree", goldenseal, etc. You put 15 to 30 mL in some water and drink it before meals. Some of the heavier duty bark extracts (like walnut) and clove extracts help lessen the yeast. But the tinctures can be pretty rough on the stomach and gut. So it's best to work with a Naturopath for this type of treatment.

I recently started taking Betaine HCL 648 mg capsules---one at the beginning of each meal, and that seems to help. (If low stomach acid is the problem).

Of course, you may want to check for gluten sensitivity and also strictly limit your intake of sugars, since this usually is great food for yeast.

Some people take pro-biotics and pre-biotics to help balance gut flora, but these always made the problem worse for me. Some manufacturers purposely add FOS (fermentable oligosaccharides) to digestive supplements, but this can be deadly to a sensitive gut. You may find the wikipedia article here to be helpful.

Gigi, I also take 5MG of Prednisone every day, and I have trouble with bloating, but my bloating is caused by inertia problems with my small intestine and my stomach.  Do you have trouble with your stomach or bowel?  I do get tired of taking the Prednisone, and am afraid of weight gain, and worry about what the Prednisone could be doing to my bones.  I tried taking half a dose of Prednisone a day, instead of the whole pill, and I started feeling really bad.  Much more tired, more achy, there was just a huge difference, and I went back to taking the dose as prescribed, so from my experience, I would not recommending cutting your dose.  Look at other reasons of why you are bloated, and talk to your doctor.  It is very uncomfortable to be bloated, I know, and I am sorry you are having trouble with this.  I hope you start feeling better soon.

It's worth a phone call to your doctor. Seriously.

Hi there-
my bloating was caused by gluten sensitivity. My dr suggested going a few weeks without gluten. It is hard to do at first but I felt sooo much better after the second week, it was worth it. I don't miss it now. Just glad to not be in pain anymore.
