I went to a new doctor yesterday a gastroenterologist - stomach guy - and I really love him! I have a history of getting crummy doctors, so I was pleasantly surprised.
He spent a lot of time telling me the causes of GERD, commiserating with me about having AI disease, and proceeded to tell me all the things I can't eat -- Italian, Mexican, fried food, citrus, etc., etc., etc. My eyeballs started to twirl, so he said he would give me some kind of print out about what I can and can't eat. So when I got hime and looked at the handout, IT WAS A LOW-CALORIE DIET!!! Waaahhh!
I was quite surprised, and more than a little insulted!
I have GERD also and IBS but because I take prilosec (generic) I eat whatever I want in regards to the GERD. The IBS is a different story. I absolutely love spicy food and refuse to give it up so the prilosec is the answer if you want to keep eating all those foods imo :)
Oh, cmclien, that's exactly what medicine he gave me! How long does it take to work? Do you take it once a day or more often?
Because I can't live without jalapeno poppers! 8)
Don't be insulted. When I started with the GERD symptoms (and giving up foods voluntarily) I couldn't have weighed 130. (at 5'8") A couple of years later, when I got the dx I was likely 140. Still..not considered overweight. A low calorie diet was handed to me...and I equated low calorie with "low taste." The first med I took was Prilosec...and if I recall it took about a week. I didn't tempt the fates at going back and trying to drink carbonation or fried foods---but I couldn't give up jalepenos. I just ate less of them. Fast forward about 10 years...and on Nexium by then...and I realized I took the Nexium in order to be able to eat a half dozen slices of jalepeno per week. I had to modify my spices (on my own) by then. THEN...fast forward to Burning Tongue. It wasn't a matter of giving up jalepenos, it was a matter of being able to consume something without pain. I went through that for a year. But remember..wasn't the stomach, but the tongue. Not until AFTER I got the SjS dx about a year later did a friend tell me about the burning tongue! She gave me the product to heal the tongue. Well...heal is how it felt...but it does not stay healed. It comes and goes. Every once in awhile I will be in a Mexican food restaurant...having tortilla soup or cheese quesadillas, and I look at those jalepenos and know how Pavlov's dogs felt. The only difference is I am not literally salivating for that pepper! I want one so badly. Really, my food intake has been modified so radically I could probably go without the nexium now. I keep dreaming of the day I can have cheese nachos again! Heavy sigh. I don't think so in this lifetime!
I know you want to be healed....but the food modifications will grow on you! The good news is so many tasty, wonderful soups are made today. Delicious!
Best wishes, ccc
ccc, thanks for your words of wisdom and comfort! I guess I have to make a decision as to whether I want yummy-yummy or burny-burny. The good news is that I can still eat baked potatoes!
What product did you use to heal your tongue? Because I have that, too!
Gah, I'm falling apart!
It is a liquid called Orasoothe. I bought it on Amazon. You can go to their site in Grand Prairie, Tx and order too. Either way the shipping is high. One bottle lasted me about a year tho. It isn't permanent..but such a relief. I have to watch anything salty. Recently I discovered Biotene gel. I don't think this would ever cure a "spell". But it does relieve mild irritation. Again..that doesn't last much over a half hour...but it is a great respite. Someone wrote in and said this product did nothing for them. I think she was talking about dry mouth...and I was specifically saying the product soothed my tongue. (albeit briefly :) )
Good luck...you will feel so much better without the burning, you will adjust to food avoidance!

I've been taking it for 25 years when it first came out so I can't remember exactly but it depends on whether or not you have some damage to your esophagus. It will heal that too and I think for me it worked pretty quickly, within a couple of days. It also helped my IBS symptoms, not the bloating etc but definitely the stomach pain which went away like magic.
I used to take 20mg once a day but I find taking 10mg 2x/day works better but thats only by prescription which I don't really understand. He might start you higher than 20 if you need to heal.
