Title: Special Glasses to treat double vision and causes
Post by: lighthouse33 on May 16, 2014, 10:48:55 AM
I didn?t know that there were special glasses used to treat double vision.  Various causes of double vision are discussed.

Ophthalmologist says glasses worn by Clinton used to treat double vision

A New York ophthalmologist told FoxNews.com that special glasses former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was seen wearing last year are used to treat double vision, which is sometimes caused by severe head trauma.

When asked what he might look for given the chance to see Clinton's medical records, Dr. Werner said he would want to examine imaging studies.

"I would like to know what the results of any imaging studies were and the cause of why someone needed Fresnel," Werner said. "There are lots of different causes, anything from Myasthenia to Multiple Sclerosis to maybe a blood clot, these are all possible causes, but all we know is that she was using a Fresnel prism and therefore had double vision."

Interesting. I met a friend for lunch today and she told me about the special glasses that were made for her macular degeneration. Wonder if they are similar?

Probably not. Macular degeneration involved the retina, and the other is a head injury cause.

Use of a Fresnel lens is pretty common and doesn't necessarily mean something serious.

I have occasional episodes of double vision---brought on by tiredness, stress, and too much close work (my eyes "cross" a bit). The Fresnel is a stick-on lens that acts as a prism and allows binocular fusion (it bends the light rays) so both eyes work together. I can apply them to the inside of my glasses since they are a special flexible plastic. I usually only have to use it on one eye--and then remove it after my eye muscles get back to normal. Sometimes this is just part of a day or can take several days.

My eye doctor told me that as we get older, sometimes these fusion problems get worse. He said the brain does most of the "fusing" even if the eyes aren't working together well.

Common example---when you're drunk, your brain can't hold the fused image as well---thus the police questions--"how many fingers?"---and jokes about a drunk seeing double.

My sister has double vision with MS and thought her pleasure reading days were over.  She just got some of those glasses (she described them as having little prisms in them) and loves being able to read again.
