I know what the procedure entails but could you share your experience with me? Any numbness after or pain issues? Tips?
I have to drive 90 minutes to get there, then have it done, then 90 minutes back home again. I was going to leave from work and drive out there but I wouldn't be able to have lunch with my teaching schedule so I am taking the day off unpaid.
That will give me some rest instead of being up at 4 getting things done for school. I am exhausted and I feel like a hamster who fell off her wheel. My legs are still moving but I am wondering why I am not getting anywhere. I finally realized that when I fell off the wheel I landed on my back so my feet are just moving in the air!
Thank you for any replies,
Brooksie
Hi
I had this last year, it is uncomfortable and a strange sensation, if you feel inside your lip you have little bumps which are glands and they make a small incision and then pick a few out I think they took 8/9 of mine but I said they could take more for studies.
It is sore so get some painkillers in, and my lip was swollen for around 4/5 days but it looked as if I had my lips done....! But it's nothing too bad so don't worry, I d describe it as a mild stingy pain for awhile.
Good luck

I had a lip biopsy done last October. I had an oral surgeon do it. She was excellent.
They numb the lip like they do when you have dental procedures. Then they put a clamp on the lower lip, which you can feel, but it does not hurt, just feels weird. (The lip is numb so it is not actual pain.) Then they make an incision inside the lower lip and take some salivary glands. I agree with Lucylocket that is is sort of a strange sensation when they take the samples, but not painful. Then they put sutures in to control/reduce bleeding. The sutures will dissolve on their own.
My lip was pretty sore afterwards and I did take a Tylenol #3 for the pain for a couple of days, maybe 2 a day for about 2 days if I recall correctly. I also had a very small bruise on the outside of my lower lip but that did not surprise me because I tend to bleed a bit. I had no swelling.
I was able to eat lunch right after the procedure although I did not chew on that side and I ate mainly softer foods.
I have had worse experiences and more pain at the dentist's office so I would say this procedure was NOT a bad experience. I would do it again if I had to.
About a week before the procedure, I stopped taking any meds or supplements that might increase the bleeding time.
PS: I have no residual pain or numbness in the lip.
Best of luck.
I had the lip biopsy around April/May 2013. No problems that day, but was in urgent care by day 2 with infection at wound site. Apparently, somewhere in recent years the protocol for asplenic patients was changed to no pre-med antibiotics for invasive procedures (per THAT ENT). But urgent care did put me on clindamycin thankfully.
Then, the so called dissolving sutures were stubborn about dissolving, even following to the letter the recommended peroxide rinses (50/50 with water). To this day, I still have a suture under the healed biopsy wound site. Only way to get it removed per ENT is make another incision, which of course would need to be sutured and "hope" that time sutures would actually dissolve. Um, no thanks. Been there done that already.
No problems with pain after, no residual problems with numbness or anything else.
When I had a lip biopsy done it was pretty straightforward. I took paracetamol (tylenol) beforehand and took it 4 hours later to minimise discomfort.
I didn't find the lip biopsy as uncomfortable as tooth extractions but the 'soluble sutures' did take a while to dissolve. I was not left with any numbness.
Good luck with the procedure.
Take care - Scottie :)
Thank you friends. I really do appreciate your responses.

I had one april 17, I went to someone that I knew had done a lot of them. I had no issues and it was negative. I pretty much knew it would be negative, my lips don't feel affected. Sutures fell out over about a week. My lip wasn't even really swollen after and I don't think I took any pain relievers at all. I have no numbness but I can feel with my tongue where it was done, just a little scar tissue. I was more upset at the situation that brought me to requiring a lip biopsy than the lip biopsy itself.
