Title: Positive Attitude Challenge is Oct. 16th - Oct. 30th
Post by: Bucky on July 09, 2013, 12:46:15 PM
Hi - back in July, I had started a 2 wk. Summer 2013 Challenge for our members.  We were only three days into our challenge when a death in my family required me to take a leave of absence from SjS World and caused me to postpone this challenge.  Well, here we are in October now, and it's time to resume our Challenge (which the days on the calendar have since changed from Summer to Fall 2013).

We had some good thoughts, etc. in our Summer Challenge that I didn't want to lose, so instead of starting a brand new Challenge, we're just going to re-start this same Challenge.

We'll go for a full two weeks, so that means the Challenge will be from Oct. 16th until Oct. 30th.

I hope all the "original" people will re-join us in this continuing Challenge, and we'll also pick up some new people along the way too.   ;D

If you miss us on the first day, feel free to join in any day along this Challenge. The more, the merrier.

I'll "see" you on Wednesday, Oct. 16th.   :D

Bucky

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone!   :D
For those of you who are new to Sjogren's World, I'm Bucky, one of the staff members here at Sjogren's World.  Through the years I have held various "group challenges" for our members to participate in if they wish to.  Just something fun for us to do.
If you'd like to read about some of our previous challenges, here are a few:  https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=10189.0  https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=13278.0  https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=14461.0 or our last challenge we had:  https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=21363.0
I can't tell you what the specifics of the Summer 2013 Challenge is just yet - you'll have to stay tuned to find out.  Check back on Wednesday, July 10th for the details.
I'm hoping we can get at least 35 members to participate.  For those of you would don't normally participate on the forum and just come here to read, come on . . join us, we'd love to have you along!
Looking forward to our challenge together - I hope you'll join us.  Anybody willing to sign up today - challenge details sight unseen??   ;)
I'm not much or a sight unseen type of gal...but what the hey.  :)
Maybe something like a 15 minute a day commitment "Moving my life forward".  Plan 15 mins. each day to work toward any small or large goal for the day---even just time for entertainment or creative activity that we have been putting off?
I'll try it again,  I signed up in years past but then dropped out,  but will always get back up on the horse and try again.
Maybe commit to doing something for ourselves each day to reduce our stress since it can play havoc with this disease. We could post what things we did for ourselves.
Just a thought.
OK - here we go . . . Summer 2013 Challenge.   ;D
Day #1 of our 14 day challenge.
As promised, today - July 10 - starts our new 2 week Summer 2013 Challenge.  During each "challenge" I try and think of something new.  This particular challenge is an attitude challenge . . . a Positive Attitude Challenge to be more specific.
Many times, having a chronic autoimmune disease can be a challenge in and of itself.  You never know what to expect day to day.  You often wonder, "what new little gift will I have today?".
Studies have shown that there are definitely health benefits of having a positive mental attitude.  A positive outlook on life will help you to feel better and will significantly help to reduce your stress level.  As you may or may not know, stress and a Sjoggie are NOT best friends!
Have you ever been around people who are so negative and find fault in every little thing?  They are not fun to be around and they can put a damper on the occasion in a big hurry.
I've known and seen people who never smile - who always look mad, sad, or angry at the world.  These are people I would prefer not to hang out with.
Flip the coin and have you been around people who are always laughing, smiling and seem genuinely happy?  Are they exempt from the trials of life - absolutely not, but they have learned coping skills to deal with the situation at hand.
I am not a doctor, nurse, therapist or counselor - but, during these next two weeks we'll share with each other things that bring us a positive attitude in life, things that bring us happiness.  Ways we learn to cope with the trials life throws our way.  The different ways we can keep a positive mental attitude.
During this two week challenge, we'll not only look for ways to help our own positive attitude, but we'll also look for ways and opportunities to be positive to others.  Encouragement goes a long way and many times can leave a lasting impression on the recipient that someone showed acknowledgment of a job well done or they cared about the service or help that was given.  Children love to be praised for their efforts - the positive encouragement helps mold their young lives.
The challenge has been issued . . . let's see if we can't really strive to have a positive mental attitude these next two weeks not only for ourselves and our situations, but for our family, co-workers, and strangers we encounter each day.  Then, come back here and post what you've done , what you're thinking, etc.
As I mentioned, I'm hoping we'll have at least 35 members participate in this challenge.  One of the reasons we all come to this site is because each of us wants to be validated as fellow Sjogren's patients - to be around others who understand the challenges of this disease, and who can share ideas and be a support system as we all learn from each other.  I hope you'll join in this challenge.
Bucky
As is my tradition with each challenge, I will close each day with a quote that I've come across along the way:
"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life, not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."  - Kahlil Gibran
Bucky, I love it!  I'm in too!
I want to share my positive help for getting out of the house in the morning.
I leave my house at 6:30 a.m. to get to work.  I always have a boatload of stuff to carry out to my car -- cup of tea, workout bag, cell phone, iPod, lunch, keys.
I'm always rushing around at the last minute, and find myself being short and mean to my husband who is just an innocent bystander.
Here's what I've done:  First of all, I have a list on a post-it note with everything I'm supposed to have with me. Brain fog begone!
But my brilliant fix for my bad attitude is my cell phone alarm.  I have it set for 6:25 a.m. weekdays, and it rings as I'm getting ready to start my whirlwind exit.
When that alarm goes off, with it's pleasant music, my cell phone message reads, "Smile and give kisses!"
So I do!  And this works really well for me.
I like this!  I'm in too.  I'm just about to leave for my dance class, the only group exercise I feel comfortable in.  This morning I will only talk about positive things to others and not mention my difficulties.  Sometimes it's just too easy to say my arthritis hurts or whatever.  Not today!
Thank you Bucky,
Sometimes we just need to be reminded.
Gosh, I used to be known for my smile, that had my eyes sparkling...and it has been gone for a while.
My daughter said, "You never smile anymore"
For the last year everything has been so serious here...but, I see the light at the end of the tunnel and actually feel the weight of it lifting off my shoulders.
Silly, but for my 1st day I am going to put a smiley face on the mirror. Actually, I will put one in the bathroom for my son too.
I'm in, but I feel like I'm cheating, since I've "suffered' from Pollyanna-itis all my life!
My daughter actually commented today that I always seem to find the positive in any situation (which made me very happy). The situation that triggered that comment is my PAC for today: I mowed a small patch of lawn yesterday and last evening, and this morning my legs let me know they would have preferred the long grass; but the positive turn was the lovely scent of fresh mown grass, and sitting outside with my tea this morning watching the robins picking at the new clippings, not to mention a very comfortable sense of accomplishment.!
Day 1.
Bucky I am in. I know I didn't do very well in a past one, but I am excited about this one. I seen one of my little great nieces yesterday, and told her what a good little singing voice she has. I could tell it made her feel encouraged.
I ask if she would like me to make her a little book with songs in it, she nodded yes.
Today I started looking at some little children's songs, and have two so far. I plan to fix them in a cover made with colorful construction paper, and have it all decorated for her, and with her name on it.
I think this will help her self esteem. She said she had been in her bedroom singing.
Oh, for myself today I finished cutting out some fabric to make me a casual over the shoulder purse to throw my stuff in. I haven't made myself anything in a while.
Day #2 of our 14 day challenge.
We're off to a good start - I'm happy to see we have 12 members so far who are going to participate in this challenge.   ;D  Anybody can join at any point along the way in this challenge - it's never too late.
A66eyroad - I love your daily routine - good for you!
Suze - as a new member of the forum - welcome, I'm glad you are joining us on this little group adventure.
quietdynamics  - putting a smiley face on the mirror isn't silly at all.  :)
Carebear - thank you for your kind comment.
Yesterday, on the way into work, I stopped at a fast food restaurant to grab breakfast to go.  I get my order and continue on to work.  Once at work, I open my bag.  I could see by the wrapper that they included cheese on my breakfast sandwich, and I specifically said, "no cheese".  I also ordered sausage & egg and was given Canadian bacon and egg.  I had my taste buds all set for what I had ordered only to get something completely different that I did not order.  I could have ranted and complained to anyone who would listen - but, instead, I chose to go ahead and eat what before me and be thankful that I had food to eat and I've never had to wonder where my next meal was coming from.
Each day, many times a day, we are faced with choices.  The choices we make can affect not only our attitude, but the attitude of others around us.  We can chose to be angry and upset and tell everyone around us - misery loves company you know - or, we can chose to be content with what we have, although it might not be what we wanted or were expecting.
Practicing gratitude - counting your blessings - is a good positive thinking technique.  Some people keep a gratitude journal - jotting down daily things they are grateful for - family, friends, shelter, food, a job, air conditioning  ;) - - the list is endless.
I hope each day of this challenge you are able to find something positive in your life.  We don't always get in life what we want, but we usually do get what we need.
Bucky, you've always been one of my favorite people --- and you've solidified my kindred spirit feeling about you by quoting a Rolling Stones lyric!  You can't always get what you want!  :)
I know everyone is tired of hearing about my husband the therapist.  But here goes anyhow.
We often discussed whether or not you can change your reaction to the bad things in your life. His contention was that you CAN chose your reaction, and mine was that you cannot, that when you're triggered by something, you're simply triggered and react the way you react.
But one day his mother was visiting us over a long weekend. I don't remember exactly what happened, but something happened that would normally cause me to have a complete meltdown.  But I kept it together and had a smile on my face because Mother was watching.
I didn't recognize it at the time, but of course Big Red saw it.  Later that day he mentioned my calm reaction, and I laughed and said I had to keep it together because Mother was there.  He smiled and said, "So you chose your reaction, eh?"
I was shocked! And now I (grudgingly) agree with him that yes, you do chose your own reaction. But it's not easy.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Bucky.
I recently had surgery, and it will be a long recovery. Difficult as it is, I am grateful that this happened now and not any time in the recent or not-so-recent past when my kids were younger and I was often working through difficult learning situations and even crises. Now they seem to be handling it well, and they are helping me, and my husband is helping me, so I feel very lucky.
Gratitude.......a great topic Bucky!
i'm finding today i have much to be grateful for in spite of sjs!
I'm grateful for my boyfriend who not only loves me for who i am and made me change my mind about love post-divorce, but can support my challenges (and naps!) with sjs, and is encouraging me to chase my dreams.
I'm also grateful for all my grandparents (they passed a year and a half ago, grandma had parkinson's and Pa had dementia) taught me about living life with grace
Day 1 went pretty well.  My dance class presented some challenges to my positive approach, namely the behavior of others, but I feel I did well and am satisfied with my progress.
Today I have decided to build on that and smile and laugh more.  I often smile but rarely laugh so this will be a challenge.
This is a great idea Bucky and I'm delighted to be encouraged to make a positive attitude change.
Day 1 - I had my follow-up for my MRI of my knee yesterday, and when I was given the news that I showed no tear, I was very relieved.  But what really made my day was that the Orthopedic took a long time to talk with me.  He explained that technically my MRI was "inconclusive" and that meant I could still have a tear, but due to the amount of inflammation, it was hard to tell.  He put me on an anti-inflammatory and we will keep check on the knee, but spent a long time discussing the inflammation that autoimmune diseases cause, and that he was hoping this would help me see relief.
So I realized that when I left, here was an Orthopedic that seemed really distressed about the trials I was going through and wants to help.  He was compassionate, caring and was very sincere.  It reminded me that I have been so frustrated at many of my Doctors, but that there were still really good ones out there that truly cared about their patients.  For that, I am grateful.
Mrs Bucky, count me in.
I am having some family problems with one of my sons, and was feeling very miserable. But today was nice and sunny in northern England (73 degrees which is unusual for us). So, instead of moping at lunchtime, I went for a 10 minute walk in the sunshine., which always makes me feel better.
We have been in a similar position before with another son, and it broke our hearts. This time hubby and I have changed our attitudes. Our hearts can ache but they can't be broken again, so we are going to try not to let the situation make us ill. We will be positive and get on with our lives.
Thank you for starting this challenge. I won't be online much in the next couple of weeks, but I will be doing my best to have a positive attitude.
Day 2
I was presented with so many opportunities today!
While waiting in line at an office, I noticed the lady sitting across from me was wearing lovely, very distinctive earrings, so I told her how much I liked them and watched her blank "waiting for burocratic wheels to turn" look turn into a beautiful smile, and we chatted for a few minutes.
Later, my daughter and I had a few minutes to chat with a groundskeeper at a local park, telling him we appreciated his efforts to keep the park clean, and were again rewarded with a (slightly shy) grin.
After lunch at an old favourite "family style " restaurant, we made an effort to tell the waitress how much we admire the old fashioned service we always receive there; again, a beautiful smile.
Simple things that we probably all think, but don't often have the chance to mention...take the time! It gives both you and the person you speak to such a lift of spirit!
Day 2.
It helps me to write my days. lol..... Thanks Bucky for this thread, it is so nice. I was walking with my dad around his yard today, and he was showing me some of his little Rose of Sharon bushes that he is going to dig up for me to plant in my yard. I know it made him feel good to know he was passing some of his flowery bushes onto me. I gave him a big hug.
While we were in his yard, a couple of the little great nieces come over to say hi, but one of them is always angry. As she was leaving, she told my dad goodbye and that she loved him, but she looked at me and said, I don't love you.  ??? Well, she knew she was safe to let some of her anger out on me, but I looked back at her and said, I love you.
There mother has always been very controlling with them girls, and when my mom was alive, she took more care  of them than their mother. Mom even bought there school clothes for them, and her and dad really couldn't afford it.
Last year when school started, me and my husband bought each girls school clothes, shoes, etc. We can't afford to this year, but I always try to help the girls when I can.
I hope to always be uplifting, and smiling when with them.
Day 2 - It was a rough day for me health-wise, but I gave it my best.
I took my granddaughters to a puppet show this afternoon, and watching their pure, unblemished joy, it filled my heart with joy.  I am a grandma who counts her blessings each day for having these two lovely girls in her life.  ;D
Day #3 of our 14 day challenge
We're up to 14 members participating in this challenge.   ;D  Welcome all the new ones who have just joined us.
I love to read what each of you are doing to bring more positive thoughts and actions into your lives and the lives of those around you.  Keep up the good work!
As some of you have mentioned - a simple smile to another person can make a huge difference.  :)
Have you ever noticed that people are often a result of their environment?  If you were in a room with grumpy people, it would be easy to pick up on their grumpiness and then you too are complaining about things, finding fault with things, making comments, etc. A bad attitude can be infectious. Many times you hear about a person who had everything going for them, but they got mixed up with the wrong crowd of people and now find themselves getting into trouble with the law, family, employers, etc.  The people they chose to hang around with were a negative affect of them.
Perhaps you will have people in your life (usually, but not always, family members) who are toxic to you.  Perhaps you don't agree on your philosophies in life, way of raising your children, the job you have, where you live, the relationship you are in, etc.  When you are around these people there are usually hurtful words exchanged and a feeling of pins and needles being in the same room with them.  There are times where a person just has to decide for themselves that they no longer can continue the toxic relationship and have to either limit contact or distance themselves from this person(s).  The stress of this relationship will take it toll on your health and well being.
Another way to help with a positive attitude is to associate yourself with positive and upbeat people.  When you surround yourself with enthusiastic and supportive relationships, you will pick up on their attitudes and gain strength to pursue your own dreams.
When people are upset, they tend to have more aches and pains - headaches and upset stomachs, etc.  When a person is happy - they don't seem to notice the various physical problems, or tend to handle them better.
You have the ability to decide who you spend time with.
Day 3.
I think.. hehe... Well, I got good reports today on my progress at physical therapy. That made me smile a lot. I have been trying to give encouragement to someone online that has family issues, and the person said it meant a lot. I am very happy about that. I like being a help to others.
I was thinking today for a moment how fortunate I am being home now, and can rest when I need to. I am so blessed.
I am just so blessed to be here with other wonderful folks.
Great Day!
Day #4 of our 14 day challenge
We are currently at 17 members who are participating in this challenge.   ;D  Welcome, "newbie" Levette - glad you joined in on your very first post.   ;D
Everyone is doing a good job and I'm glad to hear about all the different good reports everyone is getting from their doctor visits.
I found this on the internet as it talked about how to use positive phrasing.  "Stop criticizing yourself or being unduly harsh on yourself when things don't work as you had hoped.  Admit mistakes or missteps, but then move on.  Don't punish yourself or defeat future efforts by thinking, "Only a dummy like me would have done that."  Take a page out of Thomas Edison's mental playbook.  He has been quoted as saying, "I have not failed.  I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work." "
Harnessing fear instead of being crippled by it is a fundamental way to bring about positive change in life.
This weekend may you find many positive things to celebrate.
Due to a family emergency - I will have to suspend this 2 wk. challenge for a bit.   :(
I got a phone call yesterday evening that my Dad passed away unexpectantly on Friday and I need to be gone from the forum for a bit to take care of matters.
We'll resume this challenge again, probably some time in August after things settle down a bit.
In the meantime, feel free to come here and continue to post your positive posts as you encounter opportunities in your day-to-day lives.
A positive outcome of this current event in my life is that my son and I had the opportunity to visit with Dad/Grandpa six weeks ago (we live in another state), and had a small family picnic with friends and relatives in attendance.  I'm so thankful we had been there recently to visit.
Hugs to you all,
Bucky
I'm sorry for your loss, Bucky, but I am pleased that you've had a recent visit and good memories, that means so much!
Please know, in the next few days as you talk to family and your Dad's old friends and hear wonderful memories, that your "family" here is thinking warm thoughts and wishing you strength and comfort, of mind and body.
You go and take care of things with your precious family. We will be waiting when you get back, and are able to be here.
If there is anything that you think I might be able to do to help you, please let me know. I do mean it too.
Hugs,
Bucky,
My condolences and prayers to you and family. I lost my grandparents a month a part just over a year and a half ago. Take care of yourself and your family...we'll jump start this thing again soon.
My day 3&4 are both related to my grandparents. Day 3 I called my grandmother and spent a half hour chatting with her, I could hear her smile.
Day 4: I am grateful for all my granddad taught me and I can use to repair my own home and re do our bathroom.
Again, my prayers to you bucky
Thank you everyone for your prayers and thoughts for me and my family.
There have been many challenges since that day three months ago - and we still have some matters pending to be taken care of.  One day at a time.
I'm ready to resume our Summer Challenge that had to be postponed three days into it.  So, if you've read the note I put on the very first page explaining the Challenge being resumed on Oct. 16th - I'll "see" you on Wednesday.   :)
Dee - I'm glad you are going to join in on the Challenge.  Sorry, I guess I should have restated what the Challenge is - so here is what our Summer 2013 Challenge (which is now really Fall 2013 Challenge) is all about:
Starting Oct. 16th starts our new 2 week Summer/Fall 2013 Challenge.  During each "challenge" I try and think of something new.  This particular challenge is an attitude challenge . . . a Positive Attitude Challenge to be more specific.
Many times, having a chronic autoimmune disease can be a challenge in and of itself.  You never know what to expect day to day.  You often wonder, "what new little gift will I have today?".
Studies have shown that there are definitely health benefits of having a positive mental attitude.  A positive outlook on life will help you to feel better and will significantly help to reduce your stress level.  As you may or may not know, stress and a Sjoggie are NOT best friends!
Have you ever been around people who are so negative and find fault in every little thing?  They are not fun to be around and they can put a damper on the occasion in a big hurry.
I've known and seen people who never smile - who always look mad, sad, or angry at the world.  These are people I would prefer not to hang out with.
Flip the coin and have you been around people who are always laughing, smiling and seem genuinely happy?  Are they exempt from the trials of life - absolutely not, but they have learned coping skills to deal with the situation at hand.
I am not a doctor, nurse, therapist or counselor - but, during these next two weeks we'll share with each other things that bring us a positive attitude in life, things that bring us happiness.  Ways we learn to cope with the trials life throws our way.  The different ways we can keep a positive mental attitude.
During this two week challenge, we'll not only look for ways to help our own positive attitude, but we'll also look for ways and opportunities to be positive to others.  Encouragement goes a long way and many times can leave a lasting impression on the recipient that someone showed acknowledgment of a job well done or they cared about the service or help that was given.  Children love to be praised for their efforts - the positive encouragement helps mold their young lives.
The challenge has been issued . . . let's see if we can't really strive to have a positive mental attitude these next two weeks not only for ourselves and our situations, but for our family, co-workers, and strangers we encounter each day.  Then, come back here and post what you've done , what you're thinking, etc.
As I mentioned, I'm hoping we'll have at least 35 members participate in this challenge.  One of the reasons we all come to this site is because each of us wants to be validated as fellow Sjogren's patients - to be around others who understand the challenges of this disease, and who can share ideas and be a support system as we all learn from each other.  I hope you'll join in this challenge.
Bucky
As is my tradition with each challenge, I will close each day with a quote that I've come across along the way:
"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life, not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."  - Kahlil Gibran
Happy Wednesday - October 16, 2013
Day #1 of our 14 day October Challenge.
Today restarts our Positive Attitude Challenge that was suspended in July.
I hope you have read or re-read (if you were a part of this challenge in July) the posts that were made for days 1 - 4 of the July challenge.  There were different ideas shared and ways that members had an opportunity to incorporate some positive attitude to their own daily lives and/or the lives of others.
Daily we are bombarded with heartbreaking stories of tragic events happening worldwide.  One person's whole life might be changed in the blink of an eye - a catastrophe hits without warning.
I have read here on our forum of members whose life situations changed overnight.  There have been accidents, house fires, divorces, job loss, serious illness issues, flooding, winter storms, power outages that lasted for days, loss of loved ones . . . . the list goes on and on.
How do we cope when such things come into our lives?  I have seen both spectrums of such an event - some people fall to pieces, withdraw from everybody and everything, and their physical symptoms seem to skyrocket then too.  They develop a doom and gloom outlook on life.  Everything in their life is negative.
On the other hand, I have seen people who looked for ways to manage when life throws them a curveball.  They seek out other peoples help, encouragement, and some times resources to help them pick the pieces up and continue on - to look at the positive side of things.  A word of encouragement to a person in this situation makes a world of difference to them.
It goes without saying that a person who is dealing with Sjogren's will not have 365 pain-free or symptom-free days in a year.  It's just the nature of this disease that our bodies will hurt.  How do we handle that?  Do we gripe, whine, and complain to anybody who will listen?  Or, do we look for ways to relieve our symptoms by modifying how we do things, by getting physical therapy for aches and pains, by resting when we need to?
My goal for this Positive Attitude Challenge is for each of us to look for ways to keep a positive attitude in whatever situations we might be in.  Not only for ourselves - but for other people we encounter in our daily lives.
We do need to think about how our actions and life events and the actions of others influence our attitudes.
Encouragement, a helping hand and words of praise go a long way.
For example: when I was at work on Monday, I went up to the two cleaning ladies and thanked them for all the hard work they do for the company to keep things clean.  Anybody who has a job of physical labor often feels unappreciated (I know this first hand) and a little bit of positive affirmation of a job well done is HUGE.  Both ladies responded, "thank you so much - that means a lot to us."  My actions only took a few minutes, but I'm sure the ladies will long remember that someone noticed and cared.
So, for the next 14 days - try and practice having a positive attitude.  Then, come back here and post what you've done or what you're thinking, etc. to keep a Positive Attitude.
Hi there Bucky!  I will have to withdraw from participating now, nothing wrong, we're are leaving on vacation in 7 days and will be gone for 10, so I will not get the opportunity to post.
But here's my all-encompassing positive for the next two weeks because I do believe positive attitudes can make our overall health better.
I am going to Disney World!  Yes, I'm excited like a 4 year old.  I have never been.  We were supposed to go when I was 8, but my Father had an accident 3 days before we were leaving and we had to cancel the trip.  My DH, when we were dating, heard the story and promised he would take me some day.  Well that day has come.  We will be going to the beach for 3 days, then Disney for 6.  We are going to the Disney Halloween party one night, where we get to dress up and trick or treat like kids.
Here's my positive out of all of this.  I debated and so did DH about making this trip due to being afraid of it making me sick.  Well guess what?  LET IT!  I refuse to sit around and not do anything fun with my life simply because this disease may rear it's ugly head.  So we are going!  I triple dog dare my AI's to try something!  I will whip them on top of the head with a pair of Mickey Ears!  I am excited beyond all get out and I will spend my days, oohing and ahhhing, smiling an laughing.  That's how life should be. :)
Day #2 of our 14 day October Challenge.
Was day #1 of the Positive Attitude Challenge a walk in the park??   ;)
Ha - definitely not for me!!
Each morning when I'm driving into work I'm going over the days upcoming plans.  As you know, the best laid plans can fall apart quickly.
Things were going well at work until the lights flickered and half the power went out.  Of course the "half" that went out involved all the computers and copy machine.  Like most businesses, the vast majority of our work is done via a computer.
It was off for probably 30 minutes.  Then, the power comes back on . . . Yay!!  That didn"t last long and it was off again.  :(  The second time it was off for an hour and a half.
There's not a whole lot you can do when the power goes out - you are at the mercy of the electric company.  It was a town-wide outage, so that was one positive thing as our company wasn't the only one without power.
There will be instances in our lives where things happen that we have absolutely no control over.  None of us like to be inconvenienced - but, it happens.  When these unexpected events happen - how do we react to them?
Being upset and having a negative attitude to the situation isn't going to change anything.  It is what it is, the power will come back on when the electric company can fix the problem.  It was nice to have all the company noise generated by all the various machines, radios and television go silent.  I can still continue to work on non-computer work at my desk.  The power outage wasn't all that much of a big deal to me.  In fact, I was thinking . . . hmmm, maybe, I'll go home early today if the power doesn't come back on.   :)  It's all in the attitude.
How was your day?
Thanks Bucky!
Sometimes I think it's the smallest things that I appreciate most.  I ran by Walmart during lunch to pick up some things.  As I was walking down an aisle, an elderly female that was about 5' tall was trying very hard to reach a top shelf and get something.  I noticed it and stopped and asked if I could get it for her.  She nodded and I got it down and handed it to her.  She hugged me.  I mean literally just grabbed me and hugged me and told me I was very sweet to do that for her.
Ok, I'll admit, I teared up because sometimes we forget that something so small can mean so much to someone else.  Made my day.
Day #3 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
I hope if you have come here to this thread and read about our Positive Attitude Challenge and haven't committed to joining in - join in.  You can join in anywhere along our 14 day challenge.
Everything I read mentions about the lasting effect having a positive attitude can have in your life's outlook on things whether it's a job, relationship, school, friends, etc.
Yesterday, for example, I saw a short video of a teacher who had shaved his head to help support one of his third grade students who was losing his hair to alopecia and the young boy was apprehensive about getting his head shaved.   That teacher has left such a long lasting positive attitude for his student.
Choose to have a positive attitude.  Be someone who others want to be with, because you lift their energy, attitude, and spirit.
Sorry, Bucky, I didn't officially "sign on" but this is how we try to live our lives anyway (we bing my family, community and myself).
We have a very proactive "Pay it Forward" community, and it shows! It's once again become commonplace to see what I grew up knowing as common courtesy. Doors are held open, things picked up for people who drop them, and when a tall person automatically grabs something off a high shelf for someone, the shorter person is most likely to grab something from a low one for them. It's not uncommon to drive through a pick up window to find your coffee, or toll, or parking has already been paid by the car ahead. I can't remember the last time I saw someone cut in line (although still sometimes a problem when driving).
Kind of gives credence to the Canadian stereotypes, but hey, there's worse things to be known for than being polite!
As the signs around town say, "Pay It Forward Lives Here"
My positive for today is going to sound silly, but again, a good reminder for myself that positives can come from anywhere.  I have got to the point where I don't watch TV.  I just haven't been able to find a new show that holds my interest in several years.
Found one!  I started watching the new "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" this week, and I love it!  I guess it stirs really good childhood memories.  What does a TV show have to do with a positive?  I realized after the hour it took to watch it, that not once did I worry about my diseases. :)
I have made an effort to engage in only positive interaction with and thoughts about circumstances of a discouraged family member whose situation has me so stressed sometimes because I can't fix it.  That hasn't been beneficial for either of us.
This sounds easy but really I had to just let go of all the negative aspects and just be positive only, that's it. Actually I had some relief once I made the decision.
Our interaction is better and this person has actually talked with me more in the last couple days, and that makes me feel better, hopefully makes both of us feel better. I guess I seem more approachable when I am being positive. Well duh.
Anyway so far so good. Next week I am going to do my best to read a daily affirmation or devotional and apply it during that day -this helped me some years ago, even if only to repeat it when having down moments.
I also took an oh well attitude about my car repairs today, which is better than the attitude I had before which caused me stress. I had to shell out some serious dough but oh well.
Have a wonderful weekend all!
Day #4 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
Everyone keep up the good work with your positive attitudes.   :)
One of the ways to keep a positive attitude is to not let other people's negativity bring you down.
I know people, and you probably do too, who will be negative and find fault and complain about anything.   They can put a negative twist to anything that is going on.
I just wonder if someone was brought up always finding fault with things, always complaining, never truly happy with anything, if it's ingrained in them from experiences in their childhood?  Maybe as a child they never had any praise or encouragement, no laughter or fun?  Just because someone has a child doesn't make them good parents.  Unfortunately, some children have to find their own way in life with no positive role models.
Just remember that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile.    :D
Day #5 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
It's day #5 already??  My, how time flies!
I hope there are several of our members who are participating in this Challenge and just not posting.  Don't be shy . . .  ;)
Today's post is going to be short and sweet.  Today, I'd like you to write a compliment or a positive attribute about a person and either secretly leave it for them to find, or directly hand it to the person (it could be a verbal one too, but there's something special about it when it's in writing . . . the person can re-read it, tuck it in their pocket or purse, etc.).
As I've written before, it only takes a few minutes of your time, yet makes a huge impact on the recipient.
Day #6 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
I hope you all had a good weekend.   :)
Was anybody able to give a note to compliment or a note of positive attribute to anyone yesterday?  If you didn't have a chance to do it yesterday, try and do it sometime this next week.
I made a card for our son complimenting him on the good job he's done on the golf team this year (they had their team banquet last night).
As a teenager, he is so busy with school, sports, work, and friends that sometimes it feels like we're two ships passing in the night.  This little card will just remind him how much he means to us and how proud we are of him.
As a parent, we try so hard to give our son all the tools he will need in life so when the time comes that he's on his own - he will be able to handle life's challenges.   An important tool that we've tried to instill in him is to have a positive attitude - to remind him that not everything is perfect - that there will be successes and failures along the way.
This year, our son was Captain of the varsity golf team.  I've heard from several parents how he's done such a good job motivating and encouraging the team.  That makes us very proud.
Part of having a positive attitude is having a good time even when you are losing - or being happy for someone else's success.
Day #7 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
There will be days where it's extremely hard to keep a positive attitude.
Days when you think, "okay, what ELSE is going to go wrong today?".
Sometimes we adults take life too seriously.  We need to learn to relax and loosen up.  A good way to do this is to laugh.  Laughter is good medicine for us too!
Rent a comedy movie, or watch one online.  Look up some jokes online.  With the vast assortment of all kinds of materials and resources available online - one should have no excuse they don't have anything at home to read or watch.  Youtube can keep you busy for hours!   ;)  In fact, we have a Laughter is the Best Medicine thread here on the forum - this is the 2012 one, there's also one from 2011 & 2013, https://sjogrensworld.org/index.php?topic=18408.msg195976#msg195976
Much like crying is a release of good endorphins, laughter is too.
I hope today you will find some laughter in your day.   ;D
Hee hee!  I told him that if they ask him "What are you going to do now that you graduated?" he absolutely has to say, "I'm going to Disney!"
Thank you.  He's worked hard and I'm very proud of him.
One thing I have learned to do during all this is be grateful and positive about even the teeny tiny things.  Even a small thing can be a positive.  I love to take pictures.  I have probably 10 different little memory cards, and each one is only 2 or 4 gb.  So I constantly have to switch them out and keep up with which ones I have already used.  So I treated myself to a 32gb yesterday!  Should last the whole trip now and maybe a small thing, but anything that removes stress is a positive!
Day #8 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
Well, we're half way through this challenge.  I was hoping we'd have more people participate - but, that's okay.
IF you are just now reading this thread, it's not too late to join in.   :)
Does having a positive attitude mean that life is rosy, everything is going well, you have no worries or troubles?  Absolutely not!  It just means that you don't let all the daily challenges of life consume your every thought and actions and drag you down.
Having a positive attitude means trying not to worry about situations you have no control over - for example, the weather.  You hear the weather person on TV tell of storms coming.  You can't stop Mother Nature when she brings tornadoes, floods, blizzards, droughts, ice storms, etc.  There is absolutely nothing in your power you can do to change the outcome.  BUT . . . . you can prepare for it - which would fall under having a positive attitude.
I can't count how many times I've seen people run to the stores in panic the day of a storm trying to gather supplies they will need.  If possible, everyone should keep emergency supplies in their homes and vehicles.  Keep canned goods and a working can opener in case of power outage, flashlights w/fresh batteries, keep cell phones charged up, have emergency phone numbers written down and available if needed, have bottled water on hand, extra blankets, medicines filled, etc.
Being prepared can help with the stress levels that no doubt creep in when you sit and wait to see what happens when the storms of life threaten us.
Some people, like my husband, always dwell on the gloom and doom of everything.  What will happen if we lose power for days, what will happen if we get snowed in and he can't get to work, what will happen if _______ (fill in the blank)? My take on it all is for us to be as prepared as we possibly can BEFORE the situation, and IF it happens, we'll deal with it then - so much precious energy (and to a Sjoggie, spoons) can be wasted worrying about the "what if's" in life.
Keeping a positive attitude means taking each day, one day at a time.  Taking the words, "I can't" out of your vocabulary and doing what you can and not beating yourself up because you can't do what you use to do.
Man, I am just reading this thread now...so I am joining in because it has been a really really rough year for me and my husband and I need to get back to the "positives" in life!!
For me it is the little things in life.  My friends that show up at the right time, my children just dropping by to say hi, a nice message on facebook. Every day I look for a miracle.  It could be a beautiful sunny day, the color of the trees, things like that.
I also like to give back.  Just the other day I thanked TWO friends for being there when I needed them the most.  I put my ego away and asked for help and without a hesitation I got it.  I LOVE my friends and THAT is my miracle for today!!
I agree!  It doesn't have to be some great big grandiose, life changing event - it's the little, warms-your-heart kind of things.
Day #9 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
Good morning - it's another brand new day - I hope it's a good one for you.
When you think of the word, ATTITUDE, what does that mean to you?
According to Wikipedia:  An attitude is an expression of favor or disfavor toward a person, place, thing, or event (the attitude object). Attitude can be formed from a person's past and present. Attitude is also measurable and changeable as well as influencing the person's emotion and behavior.
In lay language, attitude may refer to the distinct concept of mood.
Have you ever known someone who has been told they need an attitude adjustment? (I've known some teenagers who have been told this before.) Perhaps the person has a chip on their shoulder.  They can be rude and say unkind things and think the world revolves around them.
When a person is like this they might be told to improve their attitude or don't bother coming back to school, work, sports team, or other function they might be attending.
What kind of attitude do people see in you?
Your attitude determines most of what you experience each day.
Be someone who you would want to be around.
Day #10 of our 14 Day October Positive Attitude Challenge
I'm betting that the vast majority of people have at some time in their life ridden on a roller coaster (or at least watched one).   The cars climb a tall hill only to plunge down a steep hill on the other side.  These cars go up and down, up and down hills with twists and turns added in along the way.
Our daily lives are much like a roller coaster.  They can be full of many ups and downs of our attitudes.
This is the scenario for the last seven days at my house:
Furnace acting up Wed, Thurs., Fri. - negative
Saturday, call to schedule a serviceman - positive
Furnace quits Monday night - negative
No heat for the night - negative
Serviceman comes on Tuesday - positive
Furnace is old, parts are hard to come by - negative
Serviceman has motor that will get us heat until Thursday - positive
New furnace coming Thursday - positive
Miss day of work since serviceman is coming - negative
Thursday - new furnace takes 12 hrs. from start to finish to install - negative
Dinner is 2 hrs. late waiting on serviceman to finish up - negative
We eat - positive
We offer Serviceman dinner - he accepts and eats - positive
We have heat and new furnace - well worth the ups & downs of the last 7 days
This is what life is about  . . . ups and downs.  It's how we handle the ups and downs that make the difference.
That certainly was a roller-coaster weeek. Well done you for feeding the service man - it must have been a frustrating week for him too.
Day #11 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
One of the ways to define a Positive Attitude is to make someone's day.
In our hurry, hurry, rush, rush society people are too busy to just do something simple to make someone else's day a little brighter.
I know this is something as parents, we discourage our children to do - but, use your own common sense when or when not to do this:  talk to a stranger.  A couple days ago, I went to this antique market where merchants come from many near-by states to sell their merchandise.  There was an older gentleman in one of the booths.  I was asking him about something in his booth and he went on to tell me he was 94 yrs. old, and that he planned on going to these types of markets as long as he was able to. He didn't want to just sit home - he wanted to be out among other people.
People had been coming in and out of his booth and not saying anything.  I enjoyed taking a few minutes to just visit with him.  We talked about how products had changed through the years as products now are made of cheap materials and not well made like the "olden" days.
Does this gentleman have health problems at 94 yrs. of age - yes, he does - "his knees don't work like they used to", but, he was still putting forth the effort to keep moving.  I shook his hand and wished him well and told him I hoped he lived to be 100 and beyond.  He smiled.   :)
Wednesday, on the way into work, I went through the drive-thru to grab a breakfast sandwich before heading into work.  As I got to the window to pay, I asked the person how much was the bill of the person behind me?  She told me and I told her to just take it out of the card I had just handed her.  The employee asked me, "do you know the person?" and I said, "nope" - the employee just smiled and said, "I love it when people do that".  I got my food and drove away.  I've always wanted to do that - I know it made MY day to be able to do it and I'm guessing it also made the recipients day start off a little better.
See what YOU can do to make someone's day.
Day #12 of our 14 day October Positive Attitude Challenge
Those of us who visit this site - Sjogren's World - come here for a reason.  We've either been positively given a Sjogren's diagnose, are being tested for Sjogren's, think they have Sjogren's based on their symptoms, or know someone who has Sjogren's.
From being on this forum for five plus years I have read a lot of different stories from our members.
For some members, they are in a tough situation with increasing symptoms and medical challenges - some symptoms are subtle and come on over time, others seem to come on overnight.
One thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority of our members have MORE than just Sjogren's going on - so, it's not fair to put all the blame of our health issues on just Sjogren's - it's a combination of things, many that overlap.  Although, Sjogren's does present with its own list of life altering symptoms - some of which you just can't ignore.
It's hard to plan for the future when you don't even know what today will hold for you.
Like the changing weather - so is Sjogren's .  There will be times when things look sunny and you have energy and can get out and do things.  There will be times when dark clouds and aches and pains feel like they will never go away.  There might be times when there are dark clouds, sunshine, rain, and a rainbow all at the same time.
No one can predict or tell you what life will be like for you a couple weeks from now, a couple months from now, or a couple years down the road.  We just don't know.  All we can do is be in the present moment.
We can try and have a positive future vision, no matter how bad your current circumstances are.  We have to seek out doctors who will listen and treat us based on our symptoms (if our tests say otherwise).  We have to keep on, keepin' on - even if we feel like giving up.
If you have an "I don't care attitude", how can you expect others you deal with to care - i.e. family, co-workers, doctors, neighbors, etc.?
Take one day at a time and remember to breathe.
You are one very wise lady Mrs Bucky!
We are planning to sell our house, and buy a smaller one to, hopefully, become mortgage free when my hubby retires early 2015.
Before putting our house up for sale, we have been decluttering and doing some painting to freshen things up. This weekend was our biggest job: repainting the bedroom in the loft. We did two x two hour spells yesterday, after which I had to go to bed for a couple of hours. Today we have done another four hours, and it is almost done - and so are we! I'm sat on a recliner with a hot water bottle on my back, having done stretches for my poor painful hip and leg. And I've taken all the painkillers I can.
I started to gripe about how I could do a twelve hour stint of decorating at one time, and still have some energy left. Then I came to my senses and thought ... BUT I can still decorate, even if it's only for a short time, so that's got to be a positive.
So, now I'm feeling proud - I have achieved something that is going to make a real difference :)
Good for you, Kathyx!!   :D
It does make us feel good when we can see the fruits of our labors and know that we didn't give up and we kept working at it, a little at a time.
You and your husband are very wise to start the process now while you have plenty of time to work on it.
I'm proud of you too!   ;D
Day #13 of our 14 Day October Positive Attitude Challenge
Our Positive Attitude Challenge is quickly coming to an end.
We didn't have the group participation this time around like we did when I first started this Challenge in July - but, I do know many have come here to read and just haven't posted any thoughts.  That's okay.  I hope something along the way has inspired you to think about how your daily mood affects your attitude, and the attitude of those around you.
I'm going to re-post a thought from the July portion of this challenge:
Each day, many times a day, we are faced with choices.  The choices we make can affect our attitudes.  We can chose to be angry and upset and tell everyone around us - misery loves company you know - or, we can chose to be content with what we have, although, it might not be what we wanted or were expecting.
Practicing gratitude - counting your blessings - is a good positive thinking technique.  Some people keep a gratitude journal - jotting down daily things they are grateful for - family, friends, shelter, food, a job - the list is endless.
I'm grateful for each of our members on this forum who share their daily up and down challenges of living with Sjogren's. It's not an easy road, is it?  The journey is made easier by the sharing of our stories, our struggles, the highs and the lows, as well as our successes dealing with this disease.
I hope each day you are able to find something positive in your life.
I always talk to strangers! I don't go meet them in dark alleys, but I have such fun doing it. I always learn something new, help make their day better, offer totally unsolicited advice that I don't care if they take or not, and/or sometimes even make a new friend.
Hi Bucky:
Thank you for always doing these challenges. I just love them. Unfortunately my brain doesn't seem to register these things until too late. But I was certainly with you in spirit.
My husband and I just came back from a four-day meditation retreat out in the woods, along the water. the weather alternated between rainy, misty, and beautiful autumn sunshine. We saw deer walking past and heard the wind blowing the leaves around. Very refreshing.
It is a good reminder that to have a positive attitude we need to make time for the refreshing things in life when we possibly can. If not a trip away, at least a cup of tea in a treasured teacup, or a book read in a favorite cozy chair. I love that Velcro has gone to Disney - that was a secret pleasure for me when we took the kids there as youngsters.
Generosity of spirit is the other thing. Like Linda's Pass It On, when we give, whatever we give - however small or seemingly insignificant - it is returned to us in many ways, not the least of which is the sense of connection it provides.
Thanks again for offering these challenges.
October Positive Attitude Challenge
I hope during this 14 day Challenge that you've found something positive to take with you.  Perhaps it was something that made you stop and think, or re-think a situation.
Thanks for coming along on this challenge - hopefully next time, there will be more active participants.  ;)  Look for our next challenge in 2014.
I'm closing with some quotes that I liked that I didn't have time to post:
"No matter what the situation, remind yourself, I have a choice."       Deepak Chopra
"All you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything!"       Gary W. Goldstein
"Two things define you . . . . your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything."    Anonymous
"Whoever you are, there is some younger person who thinks you are perfect.  There is some work that will never be done if you don't do it.  There is someone who would miss you if you were gone.  There is a place that you alone can fill."    Braude
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I wish each of you joy, happiness and many blessings.
