I have a nice big canker sore on my tongue~ bag enough to have a dry mouth now this. I have never had one before~ man do they hurt! what I have looked up says to eat a bland diet for a week or so. No fruits or sweets~ Easter dinner and I am going to eat celery! Anyone got a method of getting rid of it in a day? thanks~
I have had these pain in the butt sores for a couple of years now. There is nothing to get rid of it in a day. Warm salt water rinses help. I went to the dr and he gave me steroid dental paste to put on the sores and it helps tremendously with the pain and it gets rid of them faster. Do not have dairy while you have a sore as this causes the sore to last longer and even get more sores.
I've gotten those in the past, on the side of my tongue and sometimes on my cheek, none recently thankfully. I used ambesol to numb it when it was bad, and tried to keep my mouth clean, rinsed with salt water etc...it usually went away after 3-4 days. There is a paste you can make to put on it, I will see if I can find it. Enjoy your Easter dinner, just be sure to brush, rinse and keep your mouth clean.
The paste is made from baking soda and water (a little more soda than water - it should be a thick paste to put on the sore and leave on for a little while.
I found these instructions which are pretty much what I have done for them.:
1) gargle with warm, salt water. this might hurt.
2) make a paste of baking soda and water. use a little more baking soda than water.
3) put it on the canker sore and leave it for a minute. it tastes bad. it also may sting, but not as bad as the putting salt directly on it.
4) rinse your mouth with warm water to get the baking soda out.

My husband uses peroxide on his. It takes a few days. Anbesol sounds good to me for Easter dinner! Sharon
I always rinse with a warm water/salt rinse. When I get them on the inside of my cheek, I am known to put salt directly onto them. It hurts, but works........
I hope you heal and can at least enjoy your dinner this weekend.
I would mention that my dear friend had a BAD one on her lip and her dentist gave her this magical stuff that she could not believe got rid of hers ASAP. It was not magic mouth wash..something I had never heard of. I can try to get the name of it, if you think it would help. You would have to ask though if it is for the inside of our mouth or just the lip.
thanks~ from what I found on different websites, the salt water rinse was the answer. I had been using the anbesol gel all week. I started the rinse last night. this morning it was as big around as my pinky finger. my tongue felt like it was twice as thick. I am dairy free anyway but was good to know that could make it last longer. I have started Tylenol for the pain. I guess this takes my mind off of all the other pains I have. We will be having chicken and noodles for Easter dinner so maybe that wont be as bad as ham. LOL
So the next question is~ why did I get it? so of those who get them all the time, is there something that makes them flair up? I read that stomach problems cause them too. This is something I want to stop before I get another one. Call me a wimp but this darn thing HURTS!
Happy Easter~

This is what the oncologist recommended my dad use for mouth sores during and after his chemo and radiation treatments:
Colgate Peroxyl Mouth Sore Rinse, Antiseptic Oral Cleanser & Rinse, Mild Mint/Alcohol Free
Recommended by Dental Professionals for:
Canker Sores
Gum Irritations
Denture & Mouth Sores
Orthodontic Irritations
Mouth Burns & Cheek Bites
Peroxyl and Peroxyl Alcohol-Free are patented oral debriding agents/oral wound cleansers for temporary use to cleanse canker sores and minor wounds or minor gum inflammation resulting from minor dental procedures, dentures, orthodontic appliances, accidental injury or other irritations of the mouth and gums such as mouth burns, cheek bites and toothbrush abrasions. Oxygenating action removes debris allowing natural healing to occur. This facilitates healing and alleviates discomfort.
If you can get it, Corsodyl toothpaste works well for me, use it to brush the teeth, sip a little water swilling it around the gums and tongue, the rinse properly, then apply a little of the toothpaste onto the canker sore , do this 3x daily, then use daily to keep trouble away. Dolly
I cant believe what 2 days of rinsing with salt water and then putting the paste of baking soda on this canker sore did~ I was able to eat most of my dinner today, including strawberries without any pain. From the site lighhouse33 gave, I am wondering if stress and the fact I had run out of Vit B played into it. I will have to remember baking soda trick as my son says he gets them all the time. That hurt like crazy but took the pain away in no time~ Thanks again

Call your dentist or doctor and ask them to call you in a script for Mary's Magic Mouthwash. MIRACLE!
My dentist uses laser for my cold sores on my lips and it stops the outbreak in its tracks. The sooner you get treated the better the results. He has also lasered a sore on my tongue and it healed quickly. Not sure if your dentist does this or how much it costs but it is worth it to me. I haven't tried it for canker sores but I suspect it would help with healing.
I used to get horrible canker sores that would be debillitating all the time before I was diagnosed with SJS. Once I got the dx and was put on Evoxac to try to stimulate saliva and use Biotene Oral Balance mouth moisturizing gel, I rarely, if ever, get them.

By any chance, are any of you on diuretics?
I was taking Lasix and potassium for ankle and leg edema and after only 1 wk (taking it every other day) I thought I bit my tongue. It went away only to return in the same spot a wk later.
This time, it hurt a lot. I couldn't eat and lost my sense of taste. Googled side effects of Lasix and there are mouth ulcers.
I called the dr. and waiting for instructions.
Anybody else on Lasix? Did you get mouth ulcers?
