Is anyone here, who has been officially diagnosed with Primary Sjogren's, positive for both ANA and the SSB antibodies, without also being positive for the SSA antibodies?
Is my case unusual, or do lots of people have strongly-positive SSB antibodies without any SSA?
Yes and readings have changed over time. SSB was the only positive at first then ANA.
Hi Paisley, I'm SSB only and ANA positive.
I'm goint show this post to my rheumy next week! He told me you can have ss a without ss b, but never a ss b without an a. He said it was a false positive! My neuro said I was weakly positive sjogren's and slightly hypotensive. Told me to increase liquids. I have always been on the low side of blood pressure with higher heart rate. My vitamin D levels just came back 23.5 and Thyroid was still normal. Can't get diagnosis or meds besides evoxac! Sigh!
Many with primary Sjogren's test negative for both SSA & SSB antibodies.
I tested negative for both SSA and SSB antibodies.
I have a positive ANA as well as a positive rheumatoid factor. My positive lip biopsy tested a focal score of greater than 2.
This seems to be why it takes so long and is so difficult for doctors to diagnose Sjogren's Syndrome. I had to meet 3 criteria out of a list of approx. 6 to 7 criteria before my docs would consider me as a positive diagnosis of Sjogren's.
Paisley, how weird that I JUST posted about this! Please see my post! So frustrated right now!
My daughter's results are the other way round Positive SSA but negative SSB.
She also has high ANA 1:1280 Speckled, High RF, ESR & CRP.
I am SSB and ANA positive and SSA negative.

Can it be that once again blood work is elusive? I tested positive/dx with RA in 2007 now no trace. At same time tested over and over for Sjogren's and nothing.
I am ss b only and everything else negative. However rheumy finally gave me sicca dx. I guess it's a start since I am finally getting treatment with plaquenil and evoxac. He still firmly denies a possibility of negative ss a and positive b. sigh..... Sad that symptoms have to get really bad and I was trying to avoid that!
Had to post to an old thread,
I tested positive for ss-b but not ss-a,but my genetics have no history of this disease. My genes are linked to type 1 diabtetes, which I show symptoms of,not Sjogrens. I read on another forum where there was a guy who had the same scenario, and ended up being diagnosed type 1 diabetic . There is still alot of science to investigate behind these autoimmune diseases, but so far looks like type 1 diabetics might show ss-b antibodies as well. I had my tests yesterday for type 1 including the gad-65 antibody test and glucose tolerance test . I'll update as soon as the results come in of anyones interested.
In 2013 I was postive ANA. When I finally got an appointment with a rheumy in April of 2014, my blood tests came back also postive SSB. So in a year I picked up another antibody, I guess. Everything else came back negative.
Yep
Yes. Positive ANA 1:160 speckled and posiyive SSB 8.0 (normal under 0.9). Rheumy is treating with plaquenil and salagen, but will only diagnose as sicca syndrome. Pain clinic gave me gabapentin too thankfully.
Howdy,
I am SSB positive and my ANA has come up one time positive and every other time negative. The highest my SSB ever got was 1.8 with 8 being the highest. I have a double DX of Sjogrens and Sarcoidosis.
Confusing heh? Sarcoidosis is an exclusion for Sjogrens so it is somewhat rare to have both.
So far all my blood work has come back negative but I have all the symptoms and ophthalmologist agreed with my rheumatologist that I had Sjogrens. I had no salivary function at the time and an oral maxcilofacial Dr confirmed that. The fatigue was overwhelming and I desperately tried to keep working but it was so bad I couldn't function. The rheumatologist took pity on me and treated me with plaquenil and evoxac and after what seemed like forever, I feel much better. I cringe to think what I would be like still not being treated.
It scares me that the blood tests are so finicky and unreliable. What do u believe? All I know is that I feel so much better and I don't want to "go back." I pity all who have been denied treatment because of what seems to me to be "bogus" blood results.
Reviving an old thread but the subject is exactly my question so I'll add to it anyway. Me! Just had another blood test re-confirm that I'm positive for SSb (>8 last time; 7.4 last week) and negative for SSa. I have very very dry eyes, v dry mouth (worsening, for sure). I don't have painful joints at all; only "creakiness"/stiffness in my Achilles and back first thing in the morning. Maybe achy joints are related to SSa?
Hi pbrain, i'm ss-b only as well, but I also have anti rnp. I don't know the answer to your question, but my joints burt as heck. I'm not sure what the prognosis or disease course is if you just have one and not the other. Be interesting if someone has some insight to that.
