Title: Neutropenia?
Post by: Karen13 on February 21, 2013, 10:55:50 PM
My neutrophils have been getting lower and now consistently below normal. Anyone have neutropenia? I have been getting minor infections in odd places and more difficult to treat and wondering if it may have to do with this.

Dr has not said much about it so not too worried yet, just keeping aware.

How low are we talking? What medications are you taking?

I have neutropenia, I was told it's just part of sjogrens.

It's not excessively low, has been between 1.2 and 0.8 the last couple years. Just seems I am having more trouble fighting things and I don't usually have a fever even with infections.

I am on Plaquenil, Amitriptyline, Levothyroxine and Restasis.

Thanks!

I have leukopenia. I can't remember which of my WBCs are consistently low. It's common with SLE and Sjogren's, and it's one of the things we closely monitor since I'm on an immunosuppresant.

I did have this caused by the simponi I was taking.  I see you are on plaquenil and wonder if that is a possible side effect?  I haven't taken that for 2 years and then only a short time, so I don't remember if it was a side effect or not of the plaquenil.  Dr. took me off the simponi and was going to wait a month (as I also had, as I always seem to) extensive dental work during that time period.  In the meantime, I was put on an anti-biotic by another doctor which ended up working for my RA.  I am now in a severe flare, stopped the antibiotic, and am starting that brand new oral medication for the rheum. arthritis.  I don't think it's classified as a biologic, I am curious/worried to see if this might cause the neutropenia again?  Time will tell.
