Finally - 9 days short of six months - I get to abandon the arm brace that has been keeping my arm together since I broke it. It has healed sufficiently to manage without it.
I can't say looking at this x-ray makes me happy. This was taken today. The consultant is not over the moon with it either and is arranging a CT scan to see exactly what is going on. I can move it and use it now although certain simple nthings like buttering bread is still quite painful and feels weird.
This has taken my mind off SjS a lot but its also lost me my job and depression looms although I am finding ways of combatting it.
Thanks for listening - Scottie :)
Well.....We can celebrate no brace then.
Things are going to get better. Have to.
Thinking about you, hoping CT scan goes well. CK
OUCH!! Your x ray looks like that after 9 months in a brace! That totally sucks! Sorry you lost your job. That really sucks too. We're pulling for ya. Try to stay optimistic. It has to be hard not to let it get you down. I hope things are better soon. Let us know what the ct tells ya.
Man alive Scottie, All that time in a cast and the bones are still not like they should. Are you taking something for GERD??? Could be that type of med is causing poor healing. Good luck with this. Look like a rod and screws would do the trick. Irish
Wow Scottie, that looks so painful. No wonder it hurts and feels weird when you use it as there is still so much mending to do. Good luck with the CT scan, hope they can sort out a way to help you.
Thanks folks!
It's uncomfortable now rather than painful. Some of the time it is fine but certain simple movements make it sore - like buttering bread! Opening doors can be awkward too. I do realise my left hand is working!!
I take Omeprazole Irish - but I didn't realise it could potentially slow healing.
Sept/Oct I was probably in the most prolonged pain that I have ever been in. There really was no respite and sleep was patchy in the extreme. I would be reluctant to have it operated on now and go back to that but I do want to regain full use of that arm!
Actually I didn't think quickly enough yesterday when he was examining it. He was disappointed that it stillhurt when he pressed. I should have told him that if he pressed the other arm - or any other bones he could reach come to that - they would hurt too!
Take care - Scottie :)
Bless your heart, that looks so painful. Keep the good thoughts and I hope you feel better soon!!

Your not alone Scottie....... I share your "everywhere you touch it hurts" pain. :(
Scottie, my heart goes out to you. Good luck for the ct scan.
God bless
Kathyx
Oh yikes! Not that I understand anything but to me that seems like you're in serious need of screws or nails there :(
Hope they get it sorted out as soon as possible.
I was talking to my grown up daughter tonight and she said "You never were a tactile person"
Dead right - massage = pain. Tactile = pain. Sad in a way - it meant my kids never got lots of cuddles. They seem to have grown up OK anyway. They know they were verbally loved! :)
Oh Scottie, I hope something is found out about why you are not exactly healing like you want to be. I take omeprazole too. I never know what influences what. None of us really do. Be careful with what you do until you know more dear.
susanep :)
IT is unfortunate that you are not healing properly. How is your diet? Vitamin D and protein are crucial to bone reformation. A boost in vitamin C - complex helps with healing also.

Wow - I am not a doctor, but that bone does NOT look right...! :o :-\
And they're just going to leave it like that? I can't imagine how it COULD heal when the edges of the break don't even touch...that's really weird. I know you'd like to avoid surgery, but maybe that's the only way to get the edges together? What are they expecting here - that the bone will move into position and heal eventually, or that the gap will just fill with new bone and scar tissue? I don't understand...and looking at that x-ray I certainly DO understand all your pain and frustration with this...to the layman, it sure doesn't make much sense. ???
In any case, maybe having your arm out of the brace will mean that your muscles build back up and stabilize things. I bet at first you'll be pretty sore a lot of the time, but maybe as those muscles build back up it'll get a lot better, because the bone will be getting more support and blood flow. Are you going to P.T.?
I am so sorry this is going on and on.....how frustrating!!!!!
Oh Scottie, that doesn't look good! I am surprised it isn't hurting you more. be really careful how you use it. use does actually help stimulate laying down of bone/healing but that looks so fragile, like you could break it again....maybe get a second opinion if it doesn't start feeling better soon.

Hey Scottie!
I am like everyone else on here! Your humorous just is not right! I sure hope you do not have some kind of osteo going on! Please be careful and do not fall!! That could be detrimental to that arm or any other bone that may be weak!
Just a thought... Hope that is not the case but until you find out, I would be very careful about my steps. My best friend is in her early 50's, is a cancer survivor and is reaping the benefits of the chemo.. she has a severe case of osteo now.. her bones barely show on the films.
My thoughts and prayers are with you that they find what is causing your slow healing!
Oh, Scottie.....
Just read this. This is after the SECOND surgery?
While it looks not great, it is perhaps healed?
I mean the bone is now grown together?
If the orthopedist wants to 'leave well enough alone' after the CT scan, perhaps what you need is some physical or occupational
therapy to strengthen your arm and hand.
After such a long period of disuse and misery, you have lost lots of function.
If the bone is 'ok' then I hope you will get some help in regaining the lost strength and function.
Please, do keep us posted.
Hugs

This post was from before Scottie had her surgery. She has been away recouperating. Hopefully she is doing better now and will be back before long. I believe there is a post from right before she left that details alittle more what they were going to do. Hope to hear from her before too long.
