Title: Whiskey shot! On MTX and can't have it
Post by: bloodless on February 14, 2013, 08:48:27 AM
I've never been a big drinker, but for some reason, out of the blue, I want a shot of a good canadian whiskey really bad. I take 20 mgs of methotrexate a week and was told not to drink while on this drug. "No problem doc" I said, because of course, I almost never had a drink anyway. One or two on a holiday maybe.

Maybe it's the tv shows I watched lately. (the characters were drinking whiskey) Sigh....

Anyone else on 20 mgs or more of methotrexate? Have you had a drink and what happened?

I wouldn't go against your doctor....maybe just call and ask?

I take 20mg/week (down from 25), but I split it into two doses - 10mg on Monday nights and 10mg on Thursday nights.

My liver tests are all excellent - very healthy (so far...knock on wood!).

I used to LOVE a good glass of single-malt, but several years ago whisky started giving me migraines (any kind of brown alcohol, really).

Pre-diagnosis, I had a glass of red wine with dinner at night. At my last Rheum visit, I complained about missing it; my Rheum said I could still have some - just keep it to 2-3 small glasses a week maximum, and don't have it within 24 hours of the Mtx. So I do that now and then - maybe 1-2 small glasses per week - and so far, so good.

I drink a lot of water, too, to help flush toxins out of my body.

But if my liver enzymes start to go up I will stop alcohol entirely.

My rheumy said it was OK to have an occasional drink.  Meaning what? I asked, and she said one or two, once or twice a month, would not hurt me. I am taking the "starter dose," three pills once a week, can't remember the mgs.

My theory on booze and high level meds is this. You are on this earth an allotted period of time. You are given one liver and when it is gone, so are you. Avoid alcohol cause it could only take one drink to screw things up. Sounds crazy, but if the changes are 10% that booze would hurt your liver when taken with the methotrexate that is a 1 in 10 chance. Just something to think about--not necessarily a true figure. Think about it. Irish

You crack me up Meow! Thanks, I needed the laugh!

Good point Irish.

I don't care for rye bread at all, but I appreciate the input Joe!
