Title: Plaquenil and calcium
Post by: Cindy on January 21, 2013, 08:35:55 AM
Im about to start taking calcium and have read that if you taka antiacids or calcium they should be taken at least 4 hours apart from plaquenil. Do you take it in a specific order?

I take Plaquenil and Calcium. Actually I don't pay much attention to how far apart I take them, and the Plaquenil still has worked fine for me. :)

I take my Plaquenil at breakfast and dinner time.  At noon, I take my multivitamin, calcium, and proton pump inhibitor.  Well, this is usually how it goes.  :)

Doesn't matter which order, just 4 hours apart.

Good info on the drug generally : http://www.drugs.com/uk/plaquenil-1101.html
and also here: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/seniors-health/medicines/plaquenil.html

The above site says "Antacids (used to treat indigestion and heartburn) and kaolin reduce the absorption of hydroxychloroquine from the gut, which may mean the full dose is not absorbed into the body. To avoid this, antacids and kaolin should not be taken in the four hours before or after taking this medicine."
Many other sources say something similar.

Google "plaquenil antacid" and/or "plaquenil calcium" and you will find good info.
