My throat has been getting dry but my mouth hasn't been too bad. Is the the saliva we swallow how the throat gets lubricated or are there glands in the throat.
I think, but am not 100% positive, that there are saliva glands at the back of the tongue which normally produce the real slippery mucousy saliva that helps us eat and keeps our throat from drying out. Our esophaguses might be more dry than normal from the Sjogren's itself which may be part of it.
It is quite common to have a dry throat. And very hard to deal with!
Thanks 4kids. The dry throat and constant throat clearing are the worst symptoms for me. it's driving me crazy.
Hi, I have a very dry throat. I sometimes lose my voice on conference calls and must take a sip of water to continue talking. Post nasal drip which some people perceive as a nuisance serves a critical lubricating function for the throat and digestive tract. I have virtually no post nasal drip with Sjogrens, and hence lack a coating to soothe the throat.
My throat and mouth are very dry.. Sipping water can help with my mouth. But nothing seems to help my throat.. I cough and cough cause its so dry. Cant talk sometimes.. What is there I can try other thn water??

Aquarius are you saying post nasal drip is what coats the throat. My saliva in my throat is so thick that my food gets caught in it and I'm spitting up what I ate for a while. Sorry to be gross
My mouth and throat are very dry all the time. This winter, I have had some post-nasal drip and it's actually welcome as it does lube my throat a little. Not much as I can't control it and it's only an occasional "sniff" but it helps.
This winter my throat has been super dry. The coughing is keeping me up at night. Its a scratchy itchy cough.. What can I use?

irish, myself, and several others (I want to say Kelly?) contend with very thick post-nasal drip that keeps us up at night. If it is post nasal drip, does it affect your sleep?
My throat is dry, but it's not that dry. It's just the mucous coming from my sinuses is so darn thick.
Although I will say that when the mucous is better, my throat does feel drier. But I much prefer the dry throat personally :D
But as I said, my throats not that dry.

My throat and mouth stay dry all the time too.

There are glands in the throat. Not big glands like the parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands as in the mouth, but little ones embedded in the throat which can only be seen on microscope.
I would suggest that the majority of lubrication comes from the mouth, and if they aren't working, the throat's going to feel dry too.
When I had dry throat the two self-help measures that seemed to give me the most comfort were drinking milk and taking plain old Mucinex (not Mucinex-DM which will dry you out more).
I used to take sinus pills for my post-nasal gunk and now I long for that post-nasal gunk to have something coating my throat! Most dry is my mouth and throat!! I get bronchial irritation often and cough.....of course I live in the dry desert which doesn't help.
Hi,
My throat gets dry, not sure what glands are involved, but when it gets painful I find that sipping a little lemon flavored flaxseed oil helps. I also add it to water and it lubes the throat during the day.
I have used mucinex before to help with the dryness. Last night I tried putting vicks vapor rub on my feet.. Read it stops coughs. I put it on my feet and managed to go all night without coughing. I will try again tonight. See if it really works, or if it is cause it was raining last night, therefore air was not so dry.
Please forgive me if letters are missing. My fingers seem to not press hard enough sometimes. I try to proof read but fear I may miss some..

Drinking hot water with lemon juice thins out mucous.
Honey and water can also sooth an irritated dry throat.
