I was just about bawling my eyes out watching this and thinking about how I have abused my body by eating all those chemicals and unhealthy foods. Since I can't take Plaquenil any longer...I have decided to eat healthy. No more chemicals! Only 1 ingredient foods. Hopefully this will help with my outrageous inflammation markers. If you can...you should watch this. It's not preachy...just extremely informative and helpful.
Thank you for the post.
Same group had a film before the one you mention, "Food Matters" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4DOQ6Xhqss
Genetically modified food labeling measure to qualify for Washington state ballot OLYMPIA, Washington | Fri Jan 4, 2013 10:07pm EST http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/05/us-usa-food-washington-idUSBRE90402G20130105
(Reuters) - A measure to require special labeling of genetically modified foods appeared virtually certain to qualify for the ballot in Washington state on Friday, two months after voters in California rejected a similar initiative
When I was working on my Bachelors we spent some time discussing the marketing of food.
Basically, the focus was the effect of WWII on socioeconomic growth. "The American Dream", a home in the suburbs, et al. The soldiers coming home and taking advantage, of deserved college access, was a major shift in the demographics of our country. The shift necessitated longer shelf life for food as the population moved to housing developments. Thus, the introduction of preservatives, super markets, TV developed the American sense of wanting "New and Improved" (and we were in a state of elation during the boom..so why not)
The Womans' Movement, which now meant two family, stressed earners, consuming more easy to prepare foods or convenience foods when on the run. Latch key children who 'grab something'.
Marketing and product is key to business survival. The pace is 'cut throat'. The interest is survival of the company, not the consumer.
Different additives in food to work on neuro-receptors, myth?, the forefront with the tobacco industry at congressional hearings. The uncovering of 'misinformation' at the hearings.
Today we are into the nth generation of these changes. Are the medical problems that have become epidemic a result of these changes? We have been in a petri dish of sorts since the 50's, reams of information regarding children and adults.
CDC and WHO states that autoimmune escalated in developed countries, that countries who are financially developing and seeing the socioeconomic shift we experienced are now seeing similar patterns.
With the event of the internet...advertising has become more sophisticated with products, 'quick fix', faux au natual, products which when presented as supplements do not come under the auspices of the FDA.
Buyer Beware to a higher degree.
For me too much work. So I think I will eat an apple and drink a glass of water...which is what I handed my children.
Good for you..wish I could do it..I do believe all this stuff in our food is making us sick..our bodies reaction for foreign things, like the chemicals, and setting off a firestorm. SOoooooo many people have autoimmune now, its really sick. I dont even trust anything they put on the package labels either. I def notice certain foods setting me off big time....best to keep a log of everything you eat and see how you feel after. I heard that some intolerances can take a few days to show their true colors too? some people think it happens right away after you eat something.
Gursie
I will watch it now!
I just read the post about worms as a possible cure for AI. People are grossed out by that but some of the same people will eat a fast food chicken nugget & drink diet soda- neither of which are real food.
Sorry for preaching! I am not the healthiest eater (I love my ice cream & potato chips) but I agree that we should be more aware of what is in our food and what is REALLY in it!
To each their own.
Buyer beware is right! Last night my daughter and I started reading the labels of all these so called "natural" "low fat" "no sugar added" items I was always so proud to put in my cart! HA! The scariest thing for me was the fact that "diet coke" is designed to make you crave carbs! OH my! Could explain why Pepsi owns Frito Lay!!!!!
We live in a hysterical nation. We are living longer than before, and population-wise, healthier. (Not this board, of course!) I really don't understand why so many people think we are being "poisoned."
Keep in mind that "non-profit" organizations need to get money to keep going. Do you think that the Sierra Club would get donations if they told the truth: we live in the least-polluted environment that we have ever had in the U.S. in the history of our country? Or that we would tolerate the gross infringements on our liberties of the EPA?
Of course not! So they take advantage of the poor science eduction of the masses to scare them to death. Otherwise, we'd never support them.
This goes in spades for the concept that our food supply is making us sick.

I don't believe I'm being "hysterical" by choosing not to ingest chemicals. On the most basic of levels...this could not be good for the body.
Every one of us is a walking, talking chemical factory. Every food that we eat is composed of chemicals with scary-sounding names. Go to www.acsh.org and search for the "holiday Menu." To refuse to ingest "chemicals" means you will starve. I really wish we had a decent science education program in this country!

The lady doth protest too much...methinks.
" if it grows on a plant ( and I would suggest a local organic one like my farm!) eat it.
"if it's made in a plant don't"
Mother nature has had hundreds of thousands of years of research and development. I'll bank on her.
I love that quote!
I like this statement: "The elements needed for life are relatively common in the Earth's crust, and conversely most of the common elements are necessary for life."
Here is a comprehensive list, composition, the human body. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_of_the_human_body
Here, on this forum, we are in fact not the "healthy population".
Here is a link with some info in chart form on additives:

Re: films and concerns about what we are eating, brings me back to products and marketing.
Example of misleading labels or missing information:
One 12 oz.can of cola contains 10 tsp of sugar. (about 40 grams...what average consumers uses grams?) That is for a can and most folks grab the bottle so a lot more oz. and the fine print shows for more than one serving... so calories have to be mutiplied. Easier to know there are 4 gr. of sugar in a cube/ 4.2 gr in tsp.
Soda, Vitamin Water, etc, were a group, hands on lesson I would use to interest students/adults when I did some work with Rutgers University/Nutrition Edu. Community Program.
Here is info about the failings of label...it shows what to look out for. Section on Supplements.
"Food Labeling Chaos" http://www.cspinet.org/new/pdf/food_labeling_chaos_report.pdf
So, too time consuming for me. I just buy predominately whole foods or those with few ingredients.
I keep it simple.

That link isn't very convincing. They don't mention the source of the proteins (ie turkey or prime rib). Were they grass fed only organic pasture? How were they butchered and handled? Where was their water source--these things matter. How were they prepared? Was margarine put on the turkey or butter? Olive oil? Was a gravy package used? Was the turkeys fed a commercial feed which is made up of stuff like GMO soybeans and grains? And the "white bread is safe" stuff ??? Um. White bread is a refined product which would fall into the "no" pile without thought and is almost entirely regarded as junk food.
A lot of the vegetables sited are on the "only eat occasionally" list if you are talking primal eating or eating the way man evolved (ie. animal proteins, veggies, nuts, fruit, fat). On that plan, sweet potatoes (sugar and carbs), nightshades (ie. tomatoes, peppers, potatoes), beans (lectin), carrots (too much sugar), etc are not supposed to be routinely eaten.
Although I do not support vegetarian/vegan eating (what I mean is man evolved eating animal protein--I think we need it), I do support the thought that there is no way on earth anyone is going to convince me that constant chemical exposure is harmless, no matter the dose or that food has no bearing on health. I HAVE done my research and educated myself. Putting it into practice is extraordinarily hard. I do not daily only eat whole foods or ones on the "list". I am weak and am moving toward production of my own food so I know the quality and production, and am taking things one day at a time.
The point is, when you break any food down into its chemical constituents, it looks scary. But there is nothing scary about these foods. Your inability to pronounce the chemical names is irrelevant.
