A doctor just told me to try Wellbutrin (sp?) for my pretty mild but consistent seasonal depression and my ADD. Incidentally it is used for some neuropathy treatments so I think I'm going to give it a shot!

It makes you loose weight actually. It's a bit of a stimulant I believe.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it makes dry eyes worse! I will let you know if I figure that out :)

Wellbutrin never dried me out, but I have used in a few times and the latest time it just stoppped working. I am on Lexapro now and am beginning to see some improvement and no drying after 8 weeks. That is HUGE for me!

I have gained 3-4 lbs but I am just feeling a bit better to eat, and am thin to begin with...

Good luck.

I've used Wellbutrin for years with no problems. I was told that it caused the least amount of weight gain as far as anti-depressants go.
It takes 5 or 6 weeks to get into your system.

Good Luck!

I took welbutrin for a short while.  It was a great appetite suppressant for me.  I lost about 5 pounds in a month.   It was a little drying for me, but it stimulated my heart rate too much and I could not sleep anymore.  My fatigue was instantly gone!  I had more energy than I had had in years.

Are you saying you got sick from getting off of the lexapro? I was on lexapro with no problem until they filled the generic instead of the brand name. I got paranoia and anxiety and had to come off of it. I am now taking xanax as needed but sometimes wish i was on an antidepressant. I am scared to take anything though as the paranoia scared the crap out of me and I thought i was going insane.

valene, Please don't even begin to think that Welbutrin will cause you sleep and anxiety issues cause everyone is different. It is nice to hear what others have to say about antidepressants, but we all react differently and the only way to find out is to try. The one thing for sure is that the Trycyclic family of antidepressants will cause dryness. These are not used much for depression these days, but the low doses at night help with the neuropathy.

Just ask your doc for an antidepressant and don't try to influence him as to which one you want. The one thing about antidepressants is that you take one and see if it works, if it doesn't, you tell the doc and he orders a different one and so on. I think I was on about 10 different antidepressants and I couldn't take any of them except the zoloft.

The thing about antidepressants is that they are all a little bit different in the how they affect the chemicals in the brain. There is no tried and proven method for predicting what will work. Just hang in there and you will find one that works. Because you are so concerned about side effects, I would ask the doc if you could start out at a low dose and increase in a week or two to give your body a chance to slowly adjust. This way you wouldn't feel like you have been hit by a truck (whatever) and get scared or discouraged. Good luck. IRish

Yes we all react differently!
Both Wellbutrin & Lexapro caused terrible anxiety in me...  :-\
For me Seroquel works the best....

Trial & error is the only way to find out!

Good luck,
Maria

I have tried most of them and agree with the others that Welbutrin works well and doesn't put weight on.  I did also try Latuda which is not strictly an antidepressant, but can be prescribed for that and that made me lose weight, although it didn't help me enough and I am just weaning off it.  I just went up on my Welbutrin to 400mg SR and hopefully that will make things better.

Trazodone works for me.

Things like Xanax and Ambien can CAUSE depression. I have to take Ambien anyway. Would never sleep without it. Traz also helps with sleep.

Effexor is good for dryness....doesn't seem to cause more but it's not going to make you lose pounds.  Wellbutrin does take off weight and it's also used to help people stop smoking.

valene2009,

I took Xanax while on Wellbutrin.  The Wellbutrin tends to give you a little more energy but also can cause insomnia.  So I took a little Xanax at night.  My psych had me on both.  I didn't stay on Wellbutrin long.  This med was prescribed just before my Sjogrens diagnosis.  After starting Plaquenil and then starting to have less fatigue I stopped the Wellbutrin.  Also, it suppressed by appetite which is poor to begin with.

valene, If you have been taking xanax on a regular basis do not, I repeat, do not stop it cold turkey. This drug is very good when used as it is prescribed, but can be physically addicting. In other words, a person may not be psychologically addicted to it, but the body gets addicited to it and has to taper off very slowly.

People can become very anxious, nauseated, vomit, headaches, etc and in severe cases can have seizures if the quit cold turkey. Talk to your doctor about taper dosing if you are trying to stop. I would advise you not to try to go off the the xanax when you are starting a new antidepressant. It can be very confusing trying to sort out what symptom is from what drug.

In other words, quitting one causes symptoms and sometimes a new drug causes some symptoms that need to be identified and adjusted to. When stopping and starting pills at the same time you have no idea what is causing what. Good luck. Irish

Hahaha! I was going to write about my wonderful underarm deodorant in this thread --- because I thought it said "Anti-perspirant that doesn't dry out..."

Can you spell b-r-a-i-n f-o-g???

::)

(In case anyone is curoius, I use Ban roll-on unscented anti-perspirant because it's gluten-free and fragrance-free and artificial color free.)

that was hilarious !  thanks for the laugh!!

if anyone can help answer if it helps with ocd/ anxiety...not the deodorant tho..:PPP

so far tho no extra dryness..which is good.so maybe it will help w/ my depression which in turn will help the ocd i would think.....  i def cant take anything to dry my pore eyes or mouth out more-even if it did help w/ ocd cause i would be miserable!!!  so fingers crossed ..1st day on wellbutrin so good so far.

valene, I thought you asked your doc for the welbutrin???? Don't worry about it, just take it and see what happens. OCD, anxiety and depression are all very closely inter related. Irish

Hi Val,

I'm on day five :)  It has helped a lot already though I am having even more trouble sleeping than usual. I was really on the fence until I read that it can help with Neuropathy. Two birds, one stone! Of course I'm a vegetarian so I wouldn't really throw anything at a bird :)

Hope you are feeling well!

Try not to get too excited yet about any of the things you may be experiencing. Natural desire for improvement can make our minds think that we are rushing towards cure, etc., only to be discouraged down the road.

I would not venture to expect any really significant improvement for a couple of weeks at least. Remember that expecting nothing and being pleasantly surprised is better than expecting the world and being disappointed down the road. Good luck. Irish
