Title: Would tonsillitis or glandular fever after Sjogrens?
Post by: Joy on November 13, 2012, 03:05:03 PM
A totally selfish sounding question here. My daughter has suffered with tonsillitis a few times this year and has it now, but they are going to be testing her for glandular fever!
Someone told me that it was very infectious, could she pass anything on to me or should I just be very careful and not get too close? Especially as my glands are already swollen!

Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

First of all, I hope your poor daughter is better soon. Your question is not selfish! Glandular fever is very contagious; you want to take care of yourself for the sake of your daughter.

Thanks P.Trish

I hope she recovers quickly too, it's so horrible for her. I am feeling mega aware of washing my hands and making sure that all eating utensils go through our hot dishwasher wash!  ;D

Another name for glandular fever is 'the kissing disease', which is why a lot of college age kids get it. It's contagious but not highly contagious. Two of my kids got it at one stage - but a year apart from each other so probably not connected. None of their friends seemed to get it at the same time.

It's a nasty disease though and can take a long time to get over. I hope your daughter tests negative.

Take care - Scottie

I am assuming that you are speaking of mononeucleosis. This is a viral disease that gets the rap for being spread by kissing---think that there is usually a high incidence of this in colleges. It is spread by secretions/droplet, etc.

Everybody should wash their hands good. If it was me I would keep separate drinking utentils for everyone---better yet use styrofoam and throw them. Wash all dishes in the dishwasher and dry with heat.

This is not an usual disease in highschool kids either---usually high school age. Rest is one of the treatments. Take care of yourself and stay healthy. IRish

Good advice, Irish.

Joy, I don't blame you for wanting to be careful not to catch what sounds like mononeucleosis.  I hope it's not the case, and I feel for your daughter and the tonsillitis problems.

I had mononeucleosis when I was 17, in high school. Didn't know of anyone else around me with it, but it put me out of school for weeks.  Come to think of it, as a child I got every cold/upper respiratory infection that came around, even though I was healthy in other regards.  Hmmm...makes one wonder when all this started, doesn't it?
Take care of yourself and your family, Joy, and keep us posted.

Take care of yourself and your daughter. I think that these health challenges negatively impact us and our illness. You may want a dose of antibiotics for yourself.
