Title: strange eye question...
Post by: rudytudy on September 01, 2012, 07:21:24 AM
When looking at light colored things like a white wall or blue sky, etc. I can see what appears to be floating things in my eyes...like maybe lint?   When I move my eyes one way or the other this stuff moves like it's in the fluid of my eye.

Could it just be lint/dust?  It's not big dark spots...but there's quite a bit of it.

You can try it by just looking at a light, plain surface and then soften your focus and see through the film on your eyes...am I alone in seeing this floating stuff...

Weird question I know but thought I'd put it out there.       : )

My doctor called them floaters. I was told that it was normal.

I have them, they appeared 2 years ago. Docs tell me that they are not dangerous as long as they are not increasing in amounts.

Doc says they are normal as long as they are moving.  If there is fog that is stationary, not moving that is an issue, could be retina damage. Hey maybe this is a time when we can feel normal :P

I seem to remember him talking about blood leakage. I do not remember if he was talking of the floaters.

I have them too.

It is not lint on the surface of your eye.

I believe it is actually inside the eyeball.

The stuff that fills your eyeball is a viscous fluid. When the fluid peels back from the eye, little bits of collagen (protein) peel loose and float. Generally, it is not anything of importance. However, I got a largish black floater that persisted for a day and went to my doctor. It turned out to not be significant, but he said it could have been indicating a retina problem.

I think a doctor's appointment is warranted if they suddenly appeared or increased.

A grey area in the eye that doesn't move could be bleeding in the eye (I've had that) or the beginnings of a cataract. (Had that too in my early 30's). Some floaters are normal especially as you get older and maybe a sign of inflammation. (Yes, I have that too, luckily only in one eye). Don't take any of that stuff for granted-Sjogren's moves in mysterious ways.

Thanks Sharon that was the other thing he said that I forgot about. I have another month before my next appointment.

If it is a retinal problem, time is of the essence. Don't wait, Joe! Sharon

Most likely they are floaters. They don't hurt anything. If you get something that is like the loss of part of your vision you need to see the eye doc asap.

I have floaters that are more of a grey color but I have one that is a little larger and more black in color. Every once in a while when I move my eyes a certain way this will flit through my vision and I always swear that I have just seen a mouse run across the floor. It keeps me on my toes!!Irish
