Title: I have a confession to make
Post by: iraisin on July 06, 2012, 03:29:50 PM
my dog eats poop.

There. I said it.

My Daisy Mae is a poop eater.

So I only love on my Boudreaux. Yes. I'm cold. I can't help it. It is so disgusting, I just can't get close to the girl.

Oh man - we had one of those. Loved the heck out of her, but HATED the poop-eating.

We got REAL good about cleaning up after her RIGHT AWAY, LOL...

But of course sometimes she'd find some...and then come in the house and BURP....oh man, we thought it smelled bad the FIRST time around.... ::) :P :o

When I dog was around 12 years old she started doing that as well.

It (gag :P) seemed to be the worst (gag, gag  :() in the winter when she (sorry, another gag  :o) would eat the frozen "poopsicles".   We'd have to check her mouth to make sure she wasn't bringing any into the house.

The vet said it wouldn't harm her though.  But it sure made us sick.

Oh my...like Irish said thank goodness this is your dog's confession.  As much as I love dogs, they can do some gross things

Carebear, that's hilarious about the 'poopsicles"!   ;D :D I had no idea our little Shin Tzu ever did this stuff until I caught him dragging something out of the litter box at my MIL's house one day.  (Gag is right! Eeuuuu..)

I posted that after I had just let them out. That girl was sitting behing Boudreaux waiting for him to finish!!! I was so floored! I couldn't believe her.

I guess she was getting withdrawals because I had been picking it all up right away - so she was just about catching it on the way out!!! UuuuuhhhhH!

OK, I'm done. I have to get over this somehow. Thank's for letting me get it out of my system. I just don't even want to touch her. I want to shave soap and put it in her dog food.

OK. Now that is just adorable. I can't believe you haven't painted little cartoon mice on each fence top.

My little Rodney Joe did this when he was a puppy....he out grew it and he is now 4 years old and a reformed "poop eater".

wonder why they do it? is it some kind of survival mechanism? nutritional deficiency?

it is hard to see it happen...you got to look away.

I grew up on a farm and our farm dogs ate horse and cow poop every so often.

LOL...I had to laugh when I read your post and have to admit that I also have had some experience with "poop eaters" and having both dogs and cats in my house it can become quite a challenge. It really isn't as uncommon as you think...it's just something that people don't go around talking about becasue it is pretty gross!  :o

There are several things that you can do that may help. Sometimes your pet may be craving something in his/her diet and pet vitamins may help curb that craving. There are also formulas that you can buy at the pet stores and at the vet that you put on the food that the animals eat (the ones that have the good tasting poop). It wont hurt them but when it comes out (sorry) it wont taste as good to the other pet that wants to eat the poop! Sometimes you can also achieve this the same results by putting meat tenderizer on the food. It is cheaper than the envelopes you buy at the vet but may not work in all cases. I have also seen some products in department stores to put on the food, but don't know how well they work either as I haven't tried any of them.

Just some ideas for you....lol...sorry for the vivid descriptions...but hey...that's the way it is!  :) Gotta love our animals...even the poop eaters!  ;D

I had a feeling it was going to be something "dirty"   :o

Poor doggie is lacking something in his diet.

Poop eating has a medical name, "coprophagia."  Click on the hyperlink below to get the scoop, no pun intended!:

Well...I guess I'll take her back to the vet then. I asked him about that at one of her check ups and he said some dogs just eat poop. She's a real fat Basset Hound, so I figured she was just a glutton with a penchant for poop.

iraisin,

Hope your vet will be more helpful with this next time.  Lynn, that's really good info. for those of us with this "issue."   ;)

As you say, most people don't go around discussing it, but you know US...we discuss anything and everything!  ;) :)

(Good article, lighthouse. Thanks for the "scoop" HA ha

Oh my goodness I NEEDED that laugh!  I swear when I read every one of those posts out loud to my husband (our poop eating shih tzu died last year :'() I was laughing so hard I was crying!  Especially when I read Carebear's post with all the gagging!!!

I really identify with the "catching it as it came out" :o as my shih tzu would stand behind my chocolate lab waiting.  She even got pooped on several times  :-\ in her 'eagerness'.

Man we really do talk about some funny things here, don't we?!

Yep, Missy

This thread has gone "beyond the call of duty" I think for humor.  ;D :D  We all need a good laugh, whether it's over something gross or not.  (Sometimes those are the funniest!)

I think we all may have a skewed sense of humor with all we go through. Oh well!!

ha! ha! oh yea, Daisy's a sly one. She knows too, that I don't like it. She will turn around, look at me with those Basset eyes and sit...just sit next to a pile. Like she's asking, "mommy please?".

She really is an adorable girl, but I am definitely going to look into vitamin therapy for her. As much of a trip as it is, it really is funny.

Whose poop does she eat?  Anybody's or is she fussy?  Does she eat it raw, fried, boiled, scrambled?

My current dog is a very polite eater, but my last one was so bad with the cat box, that we called the little turds "almond roca".  Bad dog bad dog.

Ingestion of Feces and Foreign Objects in Dogs......
Coprophagia and Pica in Dogs

Pica is a medical issue referring to a dog's craving of a non-food item and the subsequent eating of said item. Coprophagia, meanwhile, is the eating and ingesting of feces.

Generally, neither of these conditions are the result of an underlying disease, however, it can occur. Fortunately, there are treatment options in these types of cases, or behavior modification practices that can be implemented if it is a non-medical issue.

The condition or disease described in this medical article can affect both dogs and cats. If you would like to learn more about how this disease affects cats, please visit this page in the PetMD health library.

I don't think there's a need for a visit to the vet unless the dog seems unwell, it's soooooooooo common for dogs to eat poop, it usually just requires training.

If you google dog or obedience training, you will find some training techniques to discourage poop eating.  I've not had a pet do this, thank goodness, but might be worth looking into for those of you who do.  I don't think I will let anyone's pets lick my face anymore though...ewwww.
