Title: Running in heat
Post by: LisaMarie on June 20, 2012, 09:47:40 AM
No.  This story is not about my dog running wild in heat. :)

I went for a two mile run (walked about a half mile ran the rest).  Now that I'm done, my head is throbbing with my heart beat.  Feels really funky.  Doesn't hurt.  Just really weird.  I could take my pulse to it.  Usually my scalp starts to tingle but it is throbbing now.

BTW...it is 86 degrees with a 48% humidity.

Oh, also - I need recommendations for sunblock.  I get a rash from the sun.  I need something that would be sensitive to our skin but block the sun.  I will stay white as a ghost in exchange for keeping the rash away.  It needs to hold up with sweat.  Lots of sweat.

There's a tri-athlete at work that competes all the time. I noticed she doesn't come back after her competitions with a sunburn. I'll ask her for you and get back tomorrow.

As far as the head throbbing - :) I do that walking down the hallway fast...HA! Not from SJS BTW, I'm just out of shape...and of course that's an exaggeration.

;D I'm jealous you can run, my arthritic knees said no to running a long time ago.

I wear UV protective clothes - it's the only thing that allows me to be outside in the sun for even a minute. I hike when the weather is nice and it sucks to wear long sleeve shirts buttoned up to the collar in a heat wave. When I kayak on the water, I wear gloves on my hands and a large hat which I don't think would work while running - LOL I can just picture someone running with a large floppy hat - not a good picture.

Hi LisaMarie,
I am a runner or used to be. I still run but not like I used to. I just got dx about a month or so ago and I truly believe all my running struggles were due to sjs. I trained for 16 weeks in 2009 and ran my first and only marathon. I didn't run much last year, just a little here and there. I started in training again in Dec 2011,  and got up to 11 miles and then got injured and didn't start back. I noticed my breathing was harder too. I still have all kinds of weird sensations all over when I run. I ran 2 1/2 miles two evenings ago...it was extremely humid and my chest ached.  I have been dealing with off and on chest pain for 2 years and just started having shortness of breath this year. It's not all the time though. It comes and goes. So weird.mi wish I could understand this stuff and I wish I knew why my chest hurts and sometimes am short of breath. Anyway, I did not run to it because it was 90 degrees today and the air was thick. I am trying to at least run 3 times a week. The best advice I can give you, is listen to your body. I don't know about the sensations you are having except to say it's sjs. Good luck to you.

Bella - I know what you mean about the issues with breathing and occasional chest pain.  I have it to.  Sometimes when I first start a run, my chest feels it then after about a half mile, it seems to clear up.  I figure it is the lungs needing to warm up.

I love running.  I've been doing it for about three years now.  I was never active when I was younger and for some reason when I was 44-45ish, I decided I wanted to run.  It is a great stress release.  There was a time when I thought I had shin splints.  But when I wouldn't run for awhile, the pain would still be there.  darn it sjogren's.  Plaquenil seemed to have taken that pain away and I haven't had it since.

I'm to go get my thyroid levels checked (putting off - another story of fear of results showing nothing).  But I've noticed I've lost my ambition and am gaining weight like crazy even with the running.  Diet is the same if not better.  This has cut down the miles I get in every week.

So I've been running for about three years and my speed has not really changed.  Anywhere from a 11-13 minute mile.  However, my distance can grow if I work at it.  I can do that pace and run up to 13 miles.  I've done one half marathon last Sept. and am thinking about trying for another but would just rather run for fun.  When I run for fun, I do anywhere from 2-10 miles depending on how I feel.

One issue I have with running is I seem to have developed runners' IBS.  I leak sometimes and bleed.  Really makes me miserable and when I got it checked out of course, they don't find anything.  Maybe I should take them one of my dirty panties?  Sorry, that was gross.  But I am tempted.  I can run any distance and experience it.  But I can also run those same distance and have no issues.

Not sure if I will run today.  It really seems to be thick in the air today.  But I'm finding myself to be very very moody at home and running helps that.  I think my boys want me to run.

Hi Lisa,
My name is Lisa too!  Anyway, I too am a runner, but have been finding it more difficult lately due to breathing issues and heart palpitations I'm getting while running.  I'm in the midst of trying to get that all checked out, so we'll see.  I usually run about 4 times a week, 4 miles at a time.

For sun protection, I use Aveeno Face Sunblock, spf 70, with uva/uvb protection.  Then for the rest of me, I actually use coppertone's pink spray baby formula, which is spf50.  Both hold up pretty well to sweat, though...admittedly, I don't sweat nearly as much as I probably should.  I also wear a baseball hat anytime I go.

I agree that running is a great stress relief, and always makes me feel better.  Try to keep enjoying it if you can, without putting too much pressure on yourself.  But I would definitely go get your thyroid checked out if you have suspicions of a problem.  It's a simple blood test, so you could find out relatively quickly if that's something going on.

I asked the athlete at work and she said she uses Nutragena in the gray bottle. But she said on long competitions, she still will get pink.

She also noted that antibiotics and other meds. could be the problem. She says when she's on antibiotics she runs early morning or at 8PM.

Good luck.

Dear Lisamarie,
Lisamarie, I am so glad you posted about running. It is so good to chat with others that love to run and share some of the same struggles. We have to stick together and encourage each other. I love to run and listen to my music. I always feel better after a run. I am sorry to hear that you also experience some chest pain and heavy breathing. I wonder what it is. I have not had any chest ct's or even seen a cardiologist or any other specialist besides my rheumy. Have you?
Sorry to hear about your IBS. That must be extremely frustrating!
Hang in there and keep running. I didn't run again this evening due to the heat. 93 degrees nd very humid! I may get up and go early in the morning.
have a good evening and I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

I LOVE to run! have done so for years( late teens to recently).

Last year i did a 100km( 62 miles?) race cross country that was a  fundraising hike event( Oxfam challenge) so i did months of mainly hiking training( bush, creeks , hills) and missed the running. I became ill shortly before i began heavy training and have stuck with the cross country hiking routine mainly since. I do 10-15 kilometers 4-5 times a week. I don't get the same "buzz" from it I do running but it is a great way to clear the mind and be active.
I have started to get back into my running routine but also note I seem to become short of breath crazy fast- not sure if it is due to the anemia that has developed ? or something else but I do fatigued much faster now. I keep my mileage up through hiking if I have to but hope at some point to get back running with better endurance than I have currently.

I say run sister! exercise is the best addiction going. We already have health issues so i feel it is even more imperative for us to keep active to keep other chronic health issues at bay.

so nice to see a  group of others here who feel the same!
