Title: Reaction to Antibiotic
Post by: gurs on May 27, 2012, 10:47:21 AM
Had to take antibiotic last night due to tooth issue. I havent had to take one in about a year. They always upset my tummy and cause my yeast to go into overdrive. About an hour after I took my Omnicef, taking having horrible neuropathy all over and just got agitated and couldnt sleep a wink. Joints felt itchy and swollen and head felt plugged up. Woke up today feeling so darn ill.

Anyone have reactions like this? I wonder if it triggered my lupus more or something? maybe an allergy to it? Ive taken Omnicef before
and never really had this.

My allergic reactions always seem to settle in the joints.  Typically I get hives, inflammation of the stomach lining with acid reflux, and it inflames my joints.  The first dose of a medication can sensitize you and the reaction doesn't happen until it is prescribed the next time.  Depending on your symptoms you can take Benadryl (drying I know) for the symptoms.  Call your doctor for a pred pack if it gets worse?

How interesting!!! My hubby is on antibiotics all the time. This past October he was on Omnicef for one month and did fine. About a month later he had infection again and the doc put him back on the Omnicef. This time after about 5 doses he had a huge headache and his anxiety was really bad. He also had some loose stools. We finally quit the pills and waited a couple days to restart thinking that possibly he had a touch of the flu. Wrong! The same symptoms again.

I looked the med up and from what I can tell the symptoms my hubby had were what is called an "untoward reaction" or an unusual reactioin. None the the issues seemed to be allergic in nature. His doc told him never to take the drug again. It doesn't seems to be a penicillin like reaction as he takes augmentin (amoxiciilin) and he soes fine.

Interesting thing. Good luck> Irish

Yeah, very interesting. Im not taking them ever again. I cant believe how sick I feel. It def triggered something..autoimmune reaction. I happend 1 hour after taking 1 omnicef. My neuropathy and joint pain is the worst, along with the headache and anxiety. I was up all night again last night. Yes, the tummy issues with the antibiotics are horrible...they make my whole chest/esophagus hurt.

I guess we can all experience different side effects from med's. I have some amoxicilin that I will try if needed. Thanks for the info.

This is my first post but have been lurking and reading on here for a long time. This is a post that I feel I must reply to.

Long story short: My allergy Dr suggested that I have SJS. No testing done but pretty sure I have it. Last December he put me on Prednesone and an antibiotic to get rid of a chronic sinus infection. I ended up on this mix for about 3 months. I ended up with something called C-Diff. Twice now. I'm just getting done today with the second round of antibiotics for it. This is one of the worst things I have been through yet. If you take a lot of antibiotics please watch out for it.

It started with loose stools, joint pain and headaches. My first thought was, "What now?" It has been terrible because it has made everything else flare!

Just a note of caution. Please watch out for this if you take a lot of antibiotics. Google C-Diff and read it. Not fun stuff. And you can pass it on to others with compromised immune systems.

Please take care, all of you! I appreciate reading your posts and learning from you what is happening to me. You have helped me in ways you will never know. Thank you!

I agree about the antibiotics..they have always bothered me. Extreme digestion issues/severe candida so Im very cautious about taking them. Doctors love to give them out when someone says they dont feel well. Last year I thought I have a severe sinus infection and went to the ER. They even did CAT scan and doc said I indeed had an infection, and prescribed some antibiotics. I was hesitant because I didnt have alot of the symptoms ,and know my SS causes severe sinus inflammation. Anyways, next day I saw my ENT and he looked at scan and said I had no infection..just some nasty sinusitis. Saved me a few weeks at least of misery. The only take time I will take them is if they can def pinpoint infection, like my tooth..having fevers, etc.  Im not sure how anyone with sjogrens and esophagus issues can even take them. They just seem to burn up my entire GI tract. (taking with food etc doesnt help).

I still cant believe how ill I feel today. Im sure it set off the SS/Lupus big time. Oh well. Thank god I have some medrol. Hopefully, this will help.

thanks

Hey Gursie,

I've had two very bad antibotic reactions in the past few years. Both were similar - high fever, swollen lymph nodes, face and body redness, terrible joint pain, swelling. It was like an 'immune storm.' After the most recent one, my rheumy explained that he sees increased drug sensitivity in some Lupus patients, and some drugs can send them into a severe flare. So my reaction was not anaphylactic, but I'm still considered 'allergic' to those drugs and should never take them again.

Makes me scared every time I take something new! :-\

Hope you feel better soon!

Yeah Suzy...I agree with you. Set off some type of autoimmune reaction. I also seem to have problems taking anything anymore. My entire
body just flips at at anything new. I guess its the autoimmune response. I always take things in the lowest doses to start, even any herbs/supplements to see how my body reacts. I know my doctor thinks Im nuts, but Im not making this stuff up.

Def not taking omnicef anymore..thats for sure!

Thanks everyone! you guys are the best!

My body can't handle any new drugs either. Almost doesn't matter what the drug is. I'm in severe pain and can't take pain pills except once in awhile. I really do feel it is because of the SJS. My "allergic" list at my dr's office is longer than my "take" list.

You are right. The C.Diff is really a bad, bad infection. I think it is worse than the MRSA infections. Granted the MRSA can be terrible, but every single case of C. Diff is beyond horrible.

I am a retired nurse and I still read up on medical things. THe incidence of C.Diff has increased significantly and going to the hospital puts a person at a high risk for getting it. The bottom line is that it is best to stay out of a hospital. WAtch the staff and make sure they wash their hands.

Also, go to the hospital,  get the procedure done and get out as soon as possible.

It is not good to take a lot of antibiotics as most of us are learning, but so often people with autoimmune disease have a weak immune system and get more infections than is normal.

Hope you are feeling better now and hope you can stay feeling better. Good luck. Irish ;D

Gurs, sure hope you feel better soon.  I think people with immune system issues need to be extra careful of all things we put in our bodies, whether they are drugs - especially antibiotics, supplements, OTC.

I had a c diff infection several years ago as a result of antibiotics and a hospital stay. To this day the post traumatic stress remains.  I did not really need the antibiotic but the doctor prescribed it without giving any warning or using basic common sense for that matter.

Whether it's an MD or an antibiotic, I am careful and cautious around both.  My guard is up due to personal experience.
