I've finally decided to get serious about losing weight. I did it about a year ago and lost 20 pounds in one month, but it's time to loose even more. I'm on a beta blocker, which scares me because people say it's hard to loose weight with them. Either way, fingers crossed.
ttdub- It's easy to tell ourself it's harder losing weight if..........we take any kind of medicine. Most people over 30 or 40 take one med or more so this is easy to claim. Even done it myself.
One other thing is if we are "sick" we can't exercise like we need to. Also true, but most ppl can do some kind of exercise. Walking, light weight lifting, stretching etc.
I think you can lose weight if you did it last year. I've been on a beta blocker for over 20 years and a bunch of other meds, plus two knee replacements. It is hard to lose weight, but I am one who thinks you can if you set your mind to it. Picture yourself thinner when it's hot in the summer and you wear your summer clothes. We all feel better after losing a few lbs. Good luck. Lucy
Even if we have a hard time and can't lose weight like healthy people, there are so many other health benefits to exercise and eating right. Good luck and keep us informed of your success!
Good luck in your quest to improved heath, ttdub. I began the same journey in November, and found a great tool on line to help me be more aware of my food intake and exercise. I'm sure there are many good ones available. I use My Fitness Pal.
Now I actually think about the food before I eat, and more often than not I make healthier choices.
I hope no one minds if I toot my own horn. ::) I have lost 16 pounds and I feel much better.
Let us know how things go.
Hey, ttdub! I'm right with you!
I've found it very difficult to lose weight since taking lots of burst-and-taper doses of methylprednosolone. At least that's what I'm blaming it on. ::) That plus the fact that I just don't have the energy to exercise. So I've decided to decrease calories to start with.
I found a website that helps figure out what my calorie intake should be (I think it was Ask.com) for my age, height and weight. Then I got a little memo pad and I write down everything I put in my mouth along with how many calories each food item "costs." I've been surprised at how many calories everything has.
For example, I drink coffee with one spoon of sugar and three or four spoons of creamer. This costs me 60 calories -- and I don't even like coffee! So I've switched to hot ginger tea which I can drink with one spoon of sugar for the same effect -- 12 calories.
I've been doing this for a week and it's really opened my eyes to what I put in my mouth! :)

You were able to loose weight while on a beta blocker??
Thanks everyone! Great comments. I will keep you all updated.
I didn't think I could lose weight being on all these meds, low thyroid, and not able to exercise like in the past.
One day last March I decided to try and count calories and see if it helped any. I did begin to lose weight, and ended up at the end of the year losing 77 pounds.
My problem now is after the new year, and birthdays I attended with close family, I have gained about 6 pounds back. I am back to counting, and trying to go forward, because I found it a bit harder after a year to be as strict.
I didn't go hungry before, because if I ate all of my allowed calories then I would either have coffee with a piece of hard sugar free candy, or open up a can of green beans that have few calories and eat the whole can if I needed too.
I also bought a book that tells calories for some of the fast food restaurants like McDonalds, etc. and that helped also.
I never leave a place that has a McDonalds without getting a soft serve ice cream cone, because it is only 150 calories and so good on my dry throat.
One thing that is hard for me is that I like my sweets, and salty things.
Good Luck Everyone
Oh! I almost forgot, I heard of this site the other day.

Prednisone is terrible and does affect metabolism. I was able to taper off (once 6 years ago) and quickly lost 25lbs and then after quitting Depo I dropped another 10lb without trying. I gained it all back when I got pregnant and was put on 40mg pred. It is the price I have to pay to be vasculitis free. I know it sounds like a copout but I should post my before pred, on pred, off pred, and on pred pics. It's like jumping between fun house mirrors.
Well I have the opposite problem - trying to gain weight. ::) :o
To lose weight, I'd stay off of peanut butter, pastas and high protien foods. My dr suggested those to help me gain weight.
