About a month ago, I woke up and couldn't hear very well. I went to the doctor, and he said that I had fluid behind my ear and gave me some things to take. This morning, I woke up with the same feeling in my other ear... Is this going to be a problem from now on because the fluid is so sticky or something?
It must be part of SJS. I've had trouble for about 6 mo now and I can't take decongestants due to my heart. For some reason, putting hydrogen peroxide in my ears helps.
I have been having ear trouble for the last year.. same thing by the read of it.. I wake up and my ears feel full and blocked, and my hearing is muffled. - the longest these episodes can go for is 6 weeks. At its worst I end up getting nasty ear infections and dizy spells. I mentioned this to my Rheumy the last visit and she dismissed it.... I have read to many posts on this forum from people that all have ear issues to think that its not related to sjs.
I also get this and sometimes my ear will also start ringing. Once the ringing lasted almost 24 hours, it's excruciating in busy rooms and some noises start to drive you nuts. I was so unhappy I went to the CVS Minute Clinic and the nurse there said it is fluid collecting in my ear and gave me the steroid nasal spray a previous poster mentioned. It's a big help and worth a try.
It also sounds like Menier's disease, and a trip to the ENT would be in order. If you have dizziness going with it, you really need to get to an ENT pronto. Sharon
I have this problem also, but I keep thinking my ears are drying up.

It could be because of swelling in the eustachian tubes. It is common to have these tubes swell in autoimmune and allergies.
Mine do this off and on all the time and have for much of my life. I do use a steroid nasal spray that helps decrease the swelling in my nasal area. I also hold my nose and gently blow as if I were blowing my nose. This causes the estachian tubes to open up and allows the drainage to work better.
On these warm, humid, dusty, pollen days that we are having now in MN my nose and sinuses get so congested that I feel like I have 3 basketballs on my shoulders. I just used my steroid nasal spray an hour ago and I am feeling better now.
I use the Fluticasone which is steroid. Good luck. Irish ;D
Oh, Also, make sure to put heat on your glands in neck and face and massage gently so the glands drain. If you have any obstruction in your salivary glands it can place pressure on your estachian tubes and cause trouble. That is one of my big issues. Irish
My rheumy mentioned I might have Menier's (or however that's spelled). My ears will suddenly feel like they are full of fluid... sometimes happens right in the middle of a lecture, and then I have to try to TEACH with that annoying muffled sound and my ears popping. I've gotten the dizzy spells too. Oh great... I guess I might need to add another specialist to my list :(
Sounds a bit like 'glue ear'. Kids get gromets put in for it.
My daughter ws given a decongestant to take which caused the fluid to be less thick and to drain better. I'd see an ENT about it.
Take care - Scottie :) Meniers Disease tend to cuase you to not know which way up you are. Extreme dizziness.
