I just finished a round of Macrobid for a UTI and now am having stomach issues. Lots of acid and loose stools. Is this an after effect of the antibiotics. I don't know which is worse the UTI or this. At least with the UTI I didn't even know it was there. But I guess it could have went to my kidneys if not stopped in its tracks. My stomach will get better eventually I hope.
Any time you take antibiotics you should double up on high quality probiotics. Yes, you should take them all the time.
my favs:
Theralac
VSL#3
Healthy Natren
Ultimate Flora
and eat a sugar free, starch free diet... esp while being on antibiotics
Hope the UTI goes away on schedule!! Having yeast/candida is really a bad thing and you don't want to go there permanently.
I second jazzlover's advice. Probiotics are important to those of us with AI disease all the time not just when we have taken antibiotics. Good luck to you.
The probiotics are one thing I keep forgeting about. I really need to take them all the time. It would probably have kept me from having to go through this with my stomach. I will know better next time. Hope there is not a next time. The UTI is gone and I hope it stays away. I have upped my cranberry pills as they seem to help me keep away the UTIs. Thanks for your replies.
I had a dr put me on "maintenance antibiotic" for a few months and that is when I noticed it messed up my tummy afterwards. With me it was fine a week or two then BAM. Get over that fine for about a week and BAM. I got sooo tired of it I went to see my gp.
Evidentially the antibiotics help kill off the good bacteria in your stomach that helps you digest food, etc.
I definitely recommend taking a probiotic. You can get them in pill form. I use FloGen3 which is kept in the fridge and I buy from my pharmacist who also keeps it in the fridge - supposedly keeps those all active. It runs me about $12 for a months supply but it is worth it.
Not durn picnic at all with tummy issues. You're nervous about eating because you don't know how it will digest and you don't eat away from home as you're afraid it will hit you then. I wish you a whole bunch of luck and hope you stomach issues settle down.
FYI: Milk products are harder to digest with this so I'd limit them if you can.
I have used this drug more times than I can count back in the years when I was suffering from so many weird infections or supposedly infections. I have to admit I never had any problems with it back then but I never took it open ended or without a discontinue date. This is when you will take a drug for like "10 days" as per a doctors order. Open ended is usually a maintenance schedule order by the doc.
Anyway, in the years past my nursing drug book would state that this drug doesn't kill the bacteria off directly. My new nursing drug book that I just received in the mail today states that the drug interferes with enzyme related reactions that interfere with the growth of bacteria. I didn't quote this verbatim as I didn't want to get sued, but you get the idea.
But, the book does state that GI issues can occur that can be bothersome. There are also quite a few side effects that I would consider to be more than bothersome. I guess that at this point it might be worth calling the docs office and talk to his nurse and ask if you need a stool specimen to see if you are having an overgrowth of one certain organism.
These darn antibiotics can raise havoc with us at times. Sometimes it can be nothing much and clear up by just eating yogurt and eliminating dairly products from the diet for a few days. The dairy products are rough on a colon that is irritated after antibiotics. You could possibly need another antibiotic to clear up the overgrowth of bacteria in the colon. Sometimes we can growth bacteria that are not desired at all such as psuedomonas or C.diff. Good luck and keep us updated on this. Irish ;D ;D
