I'm so sorry you are suffering Harlin.  Although it can last a long time, it MAY NOT, so let's try to be optimistic.  What have the tried you for in regards to pain relief...neurontin, lyrica, etc??  Even Lidoderm patches are well known to help shingles pain.  Are you finding anything that helps?

I will be keeping you in thought and praying you feel better soon.

(((harlin))) We are only given what we can handle. Often it feels like we end up going through the grief process at least once per day. Contrary to popular belief, we want to be better. We need to feel that we are vital members of our family circle and our friends circle.

In our society we are often defined by the work that we do. When we are no longer able to work we lose more than our job, we loose our identity. We loose our ability to do the things that we liked to do. The time we are able to spend with friends, and family becomes very precious to us.

Work through your grief, be kind to yourself, and know that you are loved by those that are close to you and us that are far away.

I know how you feel.  I have had posthephetic neuralgia form my shingles for 10 years.  I got so very depressed when I found out that I had it. I blamed myself for not going to the doctor sooner.  I couldn't sleep and finally had to see a counselor to come to terms with it.  Some days are harder than others.  Now it has become part of my life.  It has gotten a little better and I think will eventually go away completely.  Usually it doesn't last too long.  I think it really depends on how long you went with out treatment when it started.  Your nerves are damaged and from what I've been told will take time to heal.  They heal very slowly.  I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry harlin but I do think things will get better with time.  Nothing is helped when we get so upset about illness......I know I seem to be doing better in every way now that I've calmed down a bit since my SJS and arthritis diagnoses!  Take it easy.

First of all, I want to extend my sympathy and concern about your battle with the dreaded shingles.

Secondly, tell me where your doctor lives so I can go and strangle him myself!!!!!!

I can't believe a doctor would tell you that. It can last a long time. Yes, lots of #%$& can happen, but he should not have told you that because it doesn't ALWAYS happen. My mother got shingles when she was in her 60's and she struggled with the pain for about a year and then it settled down.

Like people said, there are drugs that you can take and other things you can do to get your mind off the darn stuff.

The first thing you need to do is find some kind of Pilates or relaxation class that will help you with your focus. There are many ways to help focus so that your brain will minimize pain. It doesn't work all the time, but any time you can meditate and concentrate to remove yourself from an "owie" it is worth the effort.

I learned a little bit of self hypnosis for relaxation many years ago and boy did that come in handy with all my dental work. Pain will be there but it can take a back seat at times with these exercises.

Please also know that a positive attitude is one of the best things we can do for our bodies.  There is not one person on this earth that will get through their life without some sort of pain and suffering. The good thing is that we only have to carry the burden of our own pain. Our own pain is something that was allowed to happen to us for a reason unknown to us.

The one thing that we can do is to keep a positive attitude and learn from the suffering that we have. Suffering really teaches us a lot about ourselves and how we deal with the bad stuff and how to change our thinking and behaviors. Never think of pain as a negative thing---I have had pain and it is darned hard to accept it for sure. You are allowed to have time now and then to have a meltdown and then rest and pick yourself up and keep on keeping on.

The best thing we can do is be thankful for the times that we don't have the intense pain. Such a hard thing this is for us. Hang in there girl and vent all you want. Venting is allowed and all of us here have gone through similar battles in our lives so we understand. Good luck with finding the pain control that will work for you. Keep us updated as it could help others. Irish
