Title: Is Spring nearly "Sprung"?
Post by: eye2dry on February 19, 2012, 01:45:00 PM
hello all SJS folks.

This morning my backyard was very busy with activity. Many bird varieties were out at the feeders and my bird houses were being investigated. Plenty of bickering was going on and acrobatics...birds that is. I believe I have a nice pair of chickadees moving into a hole in the sweetgum tree...they seem to be staking their claim.

It is staying daylight longer now and getting daylight earlier....I am getting excited to see what is sprouting up....

I feel I am "waking up" as well.....longer days of sun are having a good effect on me. I
hope all will experience an early sunny spring.

eye2dry,

Isn't it great to see all the activity in the yard when spring is coming?  It seems to make me feel better, too. Maybe it's the thoughts of "new beginnings" that I like.

Today is not a "spring-y" looking day here in SE Kentucky.  We got the most snow of the winter today!  It's very wet and heavy and about 6 inches of it.  (I know that's not much for people who have a lot of snow each year but for here it's a good amount)  ;)  And....it's stuck on everything and is very pretty.

Maybe next week we'll enjoy some birds and more flowers coming up. Hope so!
I'm glad you are enjoying yours.

I respond to the spring weather as well.  Hearing the sound of bickering birds is one of the best things to get me in the mood for spring!  It's going to be warmer here in nj this week with temps getting into the 50-60 range by the end of the week.  I can't wait to get started in the garden.  Hubby said he'd help (do most of the work, haha) and we could both use some fresh air and sunshine  ;D

So glad you're 'waking up' and feeling happy!!!  It really is true what they say about the best things in life are free  :).

Can't get here too soon.   I think we will all feel better when we got some more warmth in the world.

I think spring has nearly sprung.  At least my daffodils think so.  They are almost all the way up and some of them are about ready to bloom.  Here is Oklahoma we just a a springtime thunderstorm with baby pea size hail.  Just a week ago we had our first and I hope only snow of the season.

Yeah?  Well durn it here in Eastern Iowa we are under a Winter strom watch from 6am Thursday to 9:30pm. Expecting 6-8 inches of snow :o  - least that is what on weatherman said. The others didn't want to be pinned down.

Worst of all is it is coming during the Working Day!!!  :'( Rain first, then snow and possible thunder snow. Probably have to dig my car out of the parking lot, travel 1/2 plowed if that streets to get home and have to shovel out part of my driveway to get the car in.  I just got over a bad sinus infecton and tummy issues too.

I want to know who ticked off Mother Nature??  ;)  I thought Spring was almost here!

Pisces, That goes for MInnesota also. We are supposed to get 6-10 inches, but I will believe it when I see it. The last snows we didn't get as much as predicted.

Stay warm and dry!!!Irish ;D

My crocuses, snowdrops, and cyclamen are all blooming, the daffodils are in bud, and because of the mild winter we had here (Western Washington state) some plants that normally lose their leaves never did. I have a Lavatera (mallow) that kept its leaves and now has flower buds! It is by a rock wall, so it kept warmer than usual. And the bleeding hearts are all coming up, along with the Pulmonaria and Brunnera.

My flowering quince never lost its leaves either. It is strange to see both leaves and flowers on it at the same time.

Hellebores of all sorts are blooming now, and the sasanqua camellias.

The birds are going crazy too. I leave the seed heads of many of my plants up all winter, so I usually have birds feeding in the yard, but there are many more of them right now, and when I go out into the backyard, they have a lot to say about it.

Spring is definitely coming!

We have a 10" winter snow watch in my part of the midwest tonight.  Would be more surprised if we got it than we didn.t.

On Monday, the birds were singing in the morning. We have birds all year here, but they are waking up and calling each other... :)  The next sign is the massive windstorms that sweep over us as the earth tilts and the jets stream moves from just south of us to just north of us. Last night was a big blow, and more is in the forecast.
Spring is here for sure.

Well, it has been an interesting day weather wise. In southern Minnesota we had a sprinkling of snowflakes that made just a lite cover on the ground this am. It then started sprinkling and increased to a nice rain and has been raining pretty much all day.

By nice rain I mean that it is coming down pretty good but not too much at a time. The ground hasn't frozen all that well or in a normal way this year so at least it is soaking in some. Our sump pump started running this morning already.

The wind has been blowing and the rain is pitterpattering on the roof. It sounds just wonderful as this area has had very little moisture in the past 6 months and the farmers have been getting mighty concerned.

Now I suppose it will warm up and the grass will turn green and then freeze to death when it turns cold in April!!! Weather is not dependable!! IRish ;D

Irish, we still have a good ground cover of that 10" of snow i wrote about.  It has been cold enough that the snow hasn't melted, just sunk down a lot and is now dirty.  Forecast for tomorrow is ice above Grand Rapids--which will not be good for the roads and then rain and lots of it for sough of GR (that's us).

In the afternoon tomorrow, the temp is supposed to be up near 57*.  So, we can have ice cones before the snow melts, lots of water with a good rain and with those temps maybe a flower poke out of the ground?  Who would guess with a winter like this.  Lucy

I thought that crocuses alway bloomed first then the daffodils.  But this year in my yard it the other way around.  I thought my crocuses bulbs had died out.  But my husband was working in the yard pulling weeds and found the crocuses.  The daffodils are already up and some are blooming.

here in Ohio today we have tornado warnings till 9pm. it was mostly sunny today with a high of 64.
my neighbors daffodils are up and budded but not open. my tulips are up about 3 inches.

I am sorry for deaths of the people today killed by tornados out in the Midwest.

Boy, can't believe how much it sounds like spring in some areas of the country. We haven't had a bad winter, but we are having a little snow now and it is to snow and rain tomorrow. I hope it keeps up like this for the next month or so cause we really need the moisture.

Until yesterday it had not rained in the twin cities (Mpls/St.Paul area MN) since August 16 of last year. I know that it rained just a couple of tenths of an ince the first part of last October and we have had no rain til yesterday and only a few inches of snow. Such an interesting year. IRish ;D
