my new diet is one that is pretty strict=i ve been on it for 2and 1/2 weeks.i mainly eat sweet potatoes, fresh veggies (no nightshades), fruits (no bananas or acidic ones) .. that is it..no nuts,no dairy, no sugar, just olive oil-noting in a can or processed no grains..Im gluten free at this point as well
ive read that grains can contribute to sjogrens/dry eyes-and then i read protein can.. well, if you go on a vegan diet you have to eat something?
has anyone had more help with fruit, veggie and lean protein/fish/organic chicken diet vs. the vegan diet??? im so conflicted!!
I dont know what to eat anymore. I have stayed away from things that I thought were making it worse and eating stuff that would make me better and nothing seems to work. I just said screw it I am eating what I want and I will just deal with the quirks that pop up on a daily basis.
So far sooo good!!!!
not sure I can help but i can tell my own experiences.
I have been a vegetarian for 27 years. Vegan for about 6 of those years. Never heavy with dairy ( only drank breastmilk as a babe and have hated bovine milk since toddlerhood).
I had severe stomach and intestinal issues- bloating, constipation/diarrhea, cramps, nausea that started 3 years ago. In a quest to help myself I started changing my diet and became gluten free. Tremendous positive change in all my GI issues( save nausea which still comes and goes, mainly with migraines). I have continued on with this since. A year ago I started to deal with an acceleration of my migraines, anxiety, yeast infections and insomnia. I visited a naturopath who did intensive allergy testing. I cut out all dairy ( hadn't been eating much anyway) and limited fruits as I was now fructose intolerant as well. I eat a lot of eggs, nuts, seeds, tons of vegetables, beans, lentils. really just my vegan diet plus eggs and with extremely limited fruit( I miss the fruits but NOT the yeast!!)The dry eyes and swollen glands have been unaffected by the dietary changes- but i would need to go back to my old eating habits to see how they would be to have a good clinical test and I am not willing to do that and risk all the GI problems I had prior! This routine has been like night/day for me in terms of the other issues I had been plagued with.
I'm with Cargill... would rather avoid fruits than deal with yeast. I am gluten, dairy and sugar free.
I think a diet with fish, eggs and vegetables is a great one!
Everyone needs to figure out a diet that works for them.
I'm a mostly ovo-lacto-vegetarian ( eat dairy and eggs), with occasional fish. I have been tested for gluten intolerance and am not - in fact I really need some grains to "ground" me and prevent digestive problems such as diarrhea.
My motto is a variety of unprocessed foods in moderation. As a vegetarian I used to eat a lot of mushrooms, but now can't eat them at all because my body just rejects them. I developed a sensitivity from overuse.
For me rotating grains, vegetables, protein sources and fruits ensures that I don't get too much of any one food (like mushrooms) and also ensures that I get a variety of micronutrients. If you keep lists of everything you can eat, it will remind to vary the menu.
Over time a vegan diet can lead to some nutrient shortages, including protein. But there are a lot of good nutritional resources to learn what your long-term concerns might be. Especially since former President Clinton switched to a vegan diet there has been a lot written about it.
Take care,
Genko
