well i went to my moms showed her my crazy super restrictive diet where i cant even eat eggs.. i did speak to the ND about chewing gum-i said i cant give that up due to severe dry mouth. she said that would be ok. obrit or trident
anyway, i decided that since i stopped all sweets on xmas i would go full force. i had 2 chocolate chip cookies, 4 fudge stripe cookies, 2 small peanut butter cups, 1 small milky way, and 3 bags small m&Ms... i will either start the diet tomororw or monday depedning upon if i can go w/o coffee
does anyone blame me for totally going crazy for 20 minutes and basically gorging on gluten and sugar before i start 60 days of nothing??? would you have done the same thing??? i feel like an addict who has to get high before they go into rehab.. lol.. been watching too much Dr. Drew...
i wouldlove anyone's thoughts and opinions. i totally wont be offended..thanks guys!gals!
val :)
I definitely would have done the same thing and probably have before starting a diet. I've had to give up caffeine some time ago because it make my heart rate speed up. I've had to go on a low sodium diet because of my kidney disease and did a little cheat just before I started it. I ate allot of potato chips and popcorn.
thanks.. hey did giving up coffee help your eyes at all or the dryness level?? just curious.thanks.
I never was a coffee drinker. As kids my brother and I used to drink what was left over in our grandmother's cup. It was cold and quite strong so I never developed a taste for it when I got older. Now iced tea was a different thing. I drank it all the time. That and soda. But when I gave them up I didn't notice a difference in my eyes. Wish I had.'
Please don't ever feel bad about food!
Our bodies need food for fuel. Food is a good thing. We also enjoy food for pleasure, and that's OK, too. Most of the time, though, we will feel best if we eat a healthy diet, and we need to do that so we can be healthier.
Eat well because you love yourself and want to take care of your body. If you sometimes eat something you "shouldn't," take pleasure in the moment and then focus on getting back on track so that you can feel your best.
Also, chocolate is awesome. No one can blame you for wanting a treat before moving on to a new stage in your life.
thank you dragonfly! btw i love your name. dragonflies are good luck!!!
hey yes .. the chocolate was yummy. i went overboard and got the head rush..but....
now on this new diet. no cheating allowed.. i wonderhow much that would really screw with results.. lol.. i am so so bad.. i figure heck-i dont drink, i dont smoke (now i am sounding like that song from Grease) but I am not Sandra Dee. lol..
i agree -food is for pleasure too. God give me the strength to do this diet. i think they need GF strict diet support groups for this crap like AA. lol
For me sugar is addictive so yes, I probably would have done the same thing. 60 days, oh my, you hang in there.
And yes I do notice if I eat baking that my mouth is more dry than it normally should be. But is that because I forget to drink plain water as I should? I got so tired of drinking litre upon litre after the spring's complete dryness it is hard for me to drink it now.
I wish you luck!!! And strength ;)
if you eat baking what?? i am sorry i dont understand..
and yes i forget to drink a lot of water too even tho i carry it around!!
I don't blame you at all. I would have done that too! In fact, I think what you did was give yourself 'closure' and a definitive start date. The first week or two is always hardest. But you can do it. Focus on the good coming out of it ;)
Oh and look up a cookbook on it. The simplest things can change a recipe and make the diet so much easier! I realised the other day when my daughter wanted eggs and bread that there are so many ways to cook them together. Dipped is french toast. Separately are eggs and toast. A hole in the middle of the toast with the eggs inside. Yadda yadda yadda. So try to combine things and cook them in different ways. If you are allowed grapes, chicken chopped up with grapes is delicious :)
A friend of mine is having success with a diet that lets you have one "binge day" a week when you can eat anything you want, no restrictions. She says it helps psychologically---if you have cravings you can usually wait for the binge day. She says that once she got used to eating differently, she didn't have the cravings as much, either.
I don't think one day a week would hurt even the most stringent diet. It's not like the grains and gluten are poison (except for people with celiac and allergy).
As for "cheating"--I hear so many people talk about food and diets that way---and I wonder, do we really need to burden ourselves with more guilt?
Calli
No guilt allowed, as I think that just makes it worse and easier to "cheat" again. This was merely a blip in your life. A mere 20 minutes! Fagettaboutit. :-)
missy-thanks for tellingn me about grapes and chicken..i love both!!! my mom gave me a cool recipe book that has a recipe for baked chicken with apple slices.. both sound great thank you!!
i agree with teh cheat day but my ND wants no cheating the first 60 days.. to her i am already cheating by chewing sugar free GF gum--i was like "gum is medicine for my dry mouth" i cant give it up.. she was ok then. lol
i will keep all of u posted..thanks for the encouragement and you know what--i dont feel bad.. i actually am anxious to see how i feel tomorrow and the next few days after going ona gluten and sugar binge.. if i start to feel better with my eyes i will begin to wonder if sjogrens is just a rollercoaster and to enjoy life andn i guess try to enjoy the ride right??? lol
thanks Lucy! like i said if i start to feel better i think i will have some of my 'answers'... maybe sjogrens is just a ride we have to take and do the best we can!! i know u have had it a long time.. thanks for the support!
Valene,
I think it was very human of you to binge at the last minute; it sounds like something I would do. Just curious: did bingeing on the "bad" stuff worsen your symptoms in any way?
Cheryl
Today, to celebrate your new way of eating, I think you should make yourself something amazing: a wonderful stir-fry, a giant salad full of delicious fresh foods, or a comforting soup.
If you take pleasure in what you can eat, you won't miss what you can't quite as much.
I just googled 'repairvite recipies' and found some really delicious sounding ones! Mountainviewchiropractic.net (I think it was but not sure) had a ton of them. Just google 'repairvite recipies' and see what comes up. I think it helps when you begin any diet to have the recipies and food on hand as you don't feel like it's so hard.
thanks Missy for that site! i will check it out..
no so far i haven't had any 'flares' due to my sugar attack yesterday..time will tell. :) i will let everyone know.. :)
started teh diet today-2 pieces of GF fresh turkey bacon and a small apple and green tea.no coffee. going to see how it goes for the day
Hi Val,
No reason to feel bad. I remember when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I decided to do as you did, and gorged myself with gluten for one last "hooray" . I also remember how much I suffered afterward though. :P
I hope you feel better with your new diet. But if not, at least you gave it your best. ;)
Whenever you're making a change, be kind to yourself. If you do something you wish you hadn't, don't beat yourself up about it, just move on. As you get into your diet, if you eat something that isn't good for you, you'll notice the effects it has on you. So, just notice and go back to eating what's good for you.
I've had such dramatic results from my diet changes, that there are some (many) foods which I like the taste of that are simply no longer tempting, because I just don't want to hurt. Chocolate means fatigue and brain fog for me, even little bits, so I still look at it and sometimes wish I could eat it, but I don't want to feel that way, so I let it be.
You'll find a balance that works for you. And when you find foods that make you feel good, you'll find some of them that become new comfort foods.
Good luck to you!
Yeah, I would have done the same. Don't beat yourself up. I wish you luck in your new diet journey..
Luna
thanks.. day 2 almost over.. kinda bored wtih the foods..not many i can eat. but going ok so far..im sure after a few weeks it will get easier. thanks for the support and encouragement
