I saw my doc this morning and had some blood taken to check for Vitamin D levels. I'm sure I read on here that people with auto-immune conditions don't metabolise Vit D properly.
A work colleague who is auto immune had hers checked recently and was found to be deficient. She has been on 4,000 units (??) per day and is reporting feeling much better and her skin has improved and is "soft as a baby's bottom!"
I should have my results by the end of the week. I'll let you all know my results and what the doc has said.
Has anyone else had their Vit D levels checked, and if so, were they low levels and what was the treatment?
My last Vit D test showed I was quite low. My PCP told me to take 2 Vitamin D caps a day (sorry I forgot the exact mg). It gives me a stomach ache...but I already know my bones are weak...so...I guess I'll take them. :-\
Yes, I was very low when tested a few months ago. I was put on 50,000 mg once a week for two or three months, then 2000 a day. I'm supposed to be retested next month, but my ache in my thigh bones has gone away, so I'm hoping that means my levels are up.
Hi divingdancer,
I'm another one on 50,000 units once a week now (was 2 times a week for several months and the level finally went up to 40 (local scale is 30-88)), and will have to have another test in a couple of months to see if it dives again. Mine never stays the same; pretty much a roller coaster and its tiring (the rheumy keeps dropping the dosage and when he does, there goes my D level again).
Thank goodness for the Internist....she sure tries to keep it above minimum (the rheumy keeps trying to keep me on 2,000 units a day, but it dives every time he has me scale down and doesn't seem to really get that anything less than 1x week will not raise my level to a "normal" range. Ugh).
If you want to see more points of view, click on the search engine, type in vitamin D and it should pull up a lot of discussions about it.
Patze
I also have had to take the very high doses twice, and now on 2,000 per day forever.
susanep :)
My lvl was 6 when first checked. I had been taking the 50,000 weekly for about a year. I then was retested and my lvl was 48. I'm now taking 1,000 mg of D3 daily to see if that works to keep it up. Should get retested soon.
Sadly for me I did not notice any change with the lvl change :(
I took the 50,000 at first and now she has dropped me to 1000mg per day. Having test repeated in April to see if dropped again
