Title: Post nasal drip
Post by: Scottietottie on December 29, 2011, 05:32:35 AM
Hi

I was dxd with post nasal drip a few years ago now and was prescribed Nasonex which I've been using regularly.

Recently, the problem has been becoming increasingly worse. It's stopping me from getting to sleep and waking me up once i've got to sleep. I wake up feeling like I'm going to choke. I can't seem to clear my throat.

This is now extending into daytime. My throat feels 'scratchy' and today my voice sounds really rough. I don't feel like I'm coming down with a cold or anything.

It's not a good time to get to see the doctor. Over the holiday period it can be difficult to get an appointment and it's just really uncomfortable - it's not like being ill.

Anyone else get 'clagged' up like this?

Scottie

Yes, I do.  I use Flonase on a regular basis.  (That is when my prescription doesn't run out.)  It does seem to help some and I get fewer sinus infections.  If the Nasonex has stopped working, maybe it is time to go back in (holiday season or not).  The sooner you make the appointment, the sooner you get in.  I've read on here when many people use the neti pot, but there have been some concerns about that recently.  I hope you get some relief soon. Even if you aren't sick, it can be aggravating to feel that way constantly.

Scottie, I was also going to suggest Flonase rather than Nasonex.

It sounds like it might be time for you to consider changing your medication if its no longer effective for you anyway.  I have tried Nasonex in the past as well and found it to be less effective for me personally, but we are all different in our response to medications.

Hope you are able to get some relief soon,
Daisy

Do I ever get clogged up like this? Only every day! Worse now with a sinus infection, but I also have this "sludge" day and night. The more I drink, the better it drains. I do wake up with the stuff dried up in my throat and cough, cough, cough. Ugh!

I can't tolerate the steroidal sprays, so I steam in the shower, use my facial steamer and use saline sprays. Really, nothing makes an impact...I had a CT of my sinuses years ago and was told I have "severe hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates" which means I have a lot more mucous producing surface area. I think surgery is the only real option but that scares me out of my mind!!

Hugs,

Scottie, I have had this for 12 years now only it is more than the post nasal drip. It is thick mucus that comes out of places I can't even describe. I am up every night til 1 AM to 3 AM and sometimes it is almost all night. I am irrigating and hacking and spitting and spraying my nose, etc.

I have had the septoplasty for the deviated septum and that made no difference. If anything it made me worse cause I got such terrible infection that it was literally years before I got that settled down.

I also have swelling in my throat from lingual tonsils or lymphoid tissue that is greatly enlarged due to autoimmune disease. I am suspicious that my low t-cells are involved in this also. I use about 5-6 boxes of Kleenex a week and have been for 12 years. I keep a paper grocery bag by my recliner and next to my bed plus one in the car for disposal of tissues.

When we go anyplace I have my water, pop, tissues and a strong plastic bag for soiled tissues. There is nothing worse than riding in someone elses car and not having anyplace to throw a kleenex. "Snot" has ruled my life for 12 years and it just doesn't go away. My doctors are beside themselves trying to figure this out.

I am thinking that a lot of my mucus is now coming from the mucus glands on the wall of my throat. I get the mucus way down deep below my larynx and it is almost impossible to get it coughed up. Sometimes I hang myself over the edge of the bed or a foot stool. My infections are not nearly as bad as they used to be--thank goodness---but I get so sick of the taste in my mouth and can't help think that I must smell like a pig sty. I suck on sugar free candies a lot.

I also gargle with Biotene mouthwash and try to get it down as far as possible to help suck that mucus out. I use the generic mucinex and that helps some plus I drink a lot. When I have trouble with the stuff getting stuck in my throat I have found that when I snack on "Cheetos" the rough texture sort of roughs up the wall of my trachea and helps to loosen stuff up so I can bring it up.

I definitely know what the word wretching means cause you will find my several times a day hanging over a sink carrying this procedure out. It is a great life if you don't weaken.

I have also had a throat that will swell shut some. I think that this is the lingual tonsil tissue as I had some of it shaved off in a surgery in April of this year. When I started the Plaquenil the first thing I noticed that first week was that my lingual tonsil tissue is not as swollen. The lump in my throat is smaller--thank goodness for that.

Scottie, I hope that you can get things under control. These mucus issues are just exhausting. I can't use a C-pap anymore---although I think the removal of the lingual tonsil make C-pap unnecessary. Mucus clearance is something that no one thinks about until you start to have trouble with it. It stinks, but what is a person to do. You do the best you can that is all.

Oh, have you folks found that the mucus issues get worse as the day goes on and by after supper it really increases. I always blame this on fluid intake all day so othat the stuff loosens up. I have slept in a recliner for many years because of my mucus.

I use the astelin and/or the Flonase nasal spray.

I always tell my ENT that I can write the book on Mucus.lol Irish
