Title: Blacked out vision and slight convulsions, any idea?
Post by: AnaGamble on December 03, 2011, 10:29:34 AM
I've always for as long as I can remember had the problem with my head not being happy with me getting up too fast.
Usually makes my vision go black and I need to stand still while it slowly returns, usually accompanied by a massive wave of headache.
Now I am pretty sure that it is just down to really rotten blood circulation.
But what bothers me is the times I get up and move around for several minutes and then suddenly it all goes black and my body starts shaking/convulsing uncontrollably.
Just had one in the kitchen, luckily I was standing right in a corner where the counter meets the sink so I could lean forward and to the side to keep myself standing upright.
(The dog was no help, he legged it as soon as he decided I was doing something strange :D)
So is it likely to be the same thing and simply two different ways for it to manifest itself or should I ask a doctor about it?

This would be something to definately talk to the doctor about and if it were me ASAP.

It might be a different issue and just the convulsing/blackout would have me worried about driving or even being home alone as next time there might not be anything to stop the fall and you could cause serious harm to yourself.

My daughter has issues w/passing out and thats not the big deal as your body kind of resets its clock once you go out and regain conciousness but it is the fall and what you hit on the way down that is the major concern for her.She has dysautonomia and it can cause issues with blood flow and due to her age she must maintain a high salt diet as meds are not age appropriate-it can cause issue when you stand quickly as the heart doesnt return blood from extremities and can cause fatigue,lightheadednes,dizziness,fainting-she cant stand in one place without moving or sit for extended periods without moving(like in line at school for fire drills or a line up where she would have to remain upright and still.Perhaps read up on it and if it hasnt been ruled out ask if it might be a consideration. You can google Dysautonomia or POTS (postural tachycardia syndrome)

Your situation is different as this is of unknown origin and IMHO you should definately let the doctor know so they can investigate and hopefully find some answers for you-maybe this new symptom will provide an additional piece of the puzzle the docs need to help find a concrete diagnosis for you.

Please take care and let your doctor know-hope you are well and get some answers soon.

I think it might have started as fainting, but in my teen years I started fighting the going unconscious bit.
I fell once and hit my head on a vacuum cleaner which made me not want to fall in the first place.
So don't know if I caused this effect myself by stubbornly refusing to seize command of my body.
But great will add it to my 18 symptoms long list for next time i go see the doctor... he is gonna LOVE me.  8)

You know,
this is starting to happen to me...
when I'm sitting on doing something on the floor and I stand up fast, it blacks out a bit, is like I see sparkles when I'm standing back up. I have to wait for the head/vision to clear up. I have to go slow.

I'm really having issues, for the first time past week I had a finger turning white like in raynaulds. I've allways been a tad anemic, but now that I'm taking a medicine that coats the stomack for almost three months, called Carafate I think is all time low....because this medicine apparently interferes a little with nutrients absorption.  I have my next endoscopy on the 7th, I'm going to tell them about these issues, in hopes they can address this.

Please see your doctor about this.

Anyone who has an issue with fainting/seizure like activity/blackness upon arising from a sitting or lying position needs to be evaluated. This can be from blood pressure dropping suddenly, a need for more salt in the diet or even an issue with the heart that demands diagnosis.

Not meant to scare you, but this is something that needs to be addressed very soon. Be aware that anytime you lose consciousness/seizure activity, etc. you run the risk of personal injury not to mention accidently starting a fire or some such event in the home. Having all these extracurricular body events is not fun and can be scary but needs to be addressed. Be aware that not all the stuff that happens to us is in the 'severe, scary issue range". Irish ;D

Well nice to hear I'm not the only one.
And yes will try and take it up with the doctor the next time I see him.
Probably not gonna tell him exactly how long I've lived with it; "oh years" will do as answer I think.  :P
But as I mentioned in previous post I never lose consciousness, which means I got some control about how I shake down to the floor.
Still not good but would be worse if I just dropped to the floor without any control at all.

Hi AnaGamble,

If I've not welcomed you to the site, let me say "Welcome!"  ;)  You'll find lots of information and many kind and friendly people here.

I'm with the others in regard to your question: I feel you should see a doctor as soon as you can. I hope your next appt. will be soon. Not trying to scare at all, but anytime something like this happens, you should be evaluated for possible causes.

We look forward to hearing more from you. Please keep us posted, and take care.
