Since dx with Sjogren's Syndrome I have noticed that despite my work colleagues and family catching very bad mucusy colds that I have remained symptom free. Has anyone else noticed the same?
A question........what would happen if I eventually did catch a bad cold? I don't seem to produce much mucus so would not be able to cough away any infection, would the infection stay (eg in the lungs) and cause more serious problems?
I'm still getting to grips with this condition and the only positive so far has been that I have not caught a rotten cold.
I have noticed too that i dont produce the mucous associated with colds, since diagnosis i have felt like i have had colds which start with a tickly throat for me then a cough which for me seems to lead to a chest infection, though i had a cold a couple of weeks ago and this did not happen.
I find this interesting as I have just finished a cold and the only way i can describe it is as a 'dry' cold! I had the usual sore throat,cough and burning mucous membranes but no runny nose or other fluid! So I had the cold without the unpleasantness if that makes sense lol
When I get a cold, I Zap it. Or I listen to tones. The sooner I start this the less severe the cold is. The tones are available at www.chakraforce.com. Listen to each tone for 3-5 minutes.
The only time I notice if I have a cold or not is my mucos will get thicker and green,, right now I;m on gentamycin by nebulizer to try and treat these pseudomas I have flaoting around, I never seem to run a fever anymore, so I never know,

Colleagues and family have all had cold recently but I just don't seem to get them any more. I'm not on immunosuppressants so I assume that my strong and immensely stupid immune system is keeping colds at bay - while attacking me.

"Common colds" aren't so common for us ...
Mine go straight to the chest and make breathing difficult.
Broncitis is a promise whenever I catch cold.
Since getting Sjogrens I no longer get colds. My nasal passages are very very dry. There is no mucus to grab on to a cold virus allowing the germs to percolate so to speak in my nose, and develop into something.
Before Sjogrens I would get a cold once, sometimes twice a year.
It would be nice to actually get a cold. It would make me feel, well more normal, like my old self.
Wow guys, thanks for the replies. Looks like we are mostly avoiding a 'snotty' nose when the colds are about. There has to be a positive to SJS! I'll keep an eye on myself when the colds are about though as I do have asthma and I don't want a chest infection. It just worried me a bit as I thought that the mucus produced helped to clear the germs.
I dont catch colds very often either, but when I do, I always have sone awful secondary thing like a chest infection or sinus infection.
Last cold I got my eardrum burst randomly :-(
When I get a cold it starts with a tickly throat and then I start to cough. My sinuses become inflamed and swell with a tremendous amount of pain.
I never, ever, ever have a runny nose. There is no mucous whatsoever.
I know it sounds crazy but because my nose is so dry, I envy those that have a runny nose.
I did the gentamycin back in the 2001 or so. I had to place my head on its side and instill the solution into one side of my nose and then turn slowly and lay my head on the other side and instill it in that side. I did that for about 4 months and found no change. I don't think they really knew why they had me do it. I do know that when I would go to work and bend over the solution would run out my nose. How embarrassing.
I have hardly had a cold ---maybe 2-3 since 1998. I am just going through a period where I have been up most of the night the past several nights with lots of mucus. If I lay down the chunks of mucus literally fall out of my sinuses into my throat and I have to sit up quickly to keep my airway open. It just occurred to me today that it could be a cold. No sore throat but have felt a little "yukky". However, I feel yukky so much of the time that it is hard to know. My chest is also hurting. I had the loose mucus in my chest tonight also with the tight chest. If it improves in the next couple of days I will know it is a cold. If it doesn't improve I will be at urgent care getting yet another antibiotic.
At our house both my hubby and I seem to be on antibiotics every 4-6 weeks the past year. We both have the low cells in the immune system. What a sicko crew we turned out to be. Irish :D
My throat was so dry today, and hurt some, but my father in law passed away so it's been a difficult time the past few days especially for my dear husband.
We had to go up today and get some things, and order flowers, etc. I look forward t o getting sleep tonight.
I am planning to see the doctor tomorrow about getting a flu shot, and some continuous female bleeding I usually have when things get off balance.
58 and still waiting for menopause to kick in. :)

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a horrible thing to deal with, death. No matter who it is, be it a family member or friend or a beloved pet, they always take a piece of our heart with them on their journey home. We're left with a huge hole in our very soul, feeling like it could never heal. You will be in my thoughts and meditations. Be blessed.
I used to get a cold 8 or 9 times a year and always ended up with bronchitis or something like that. Then I got whooping cough 3 1/2 years ago. After that horrible experience I never had a old again....until YESTERDAY!! I feel like I've been run over by a boulder! My chest hurts so bad, tight and hard to get air, my throat started out sore but better now. My nose is so stuffed up and running at the same time. It's disgusting. I can't even get it out when I blow it. I hope this one doesn't last long. They used to last a couple weeks.
All of you who are sick with the cold, I pray for health.
I also used to get a cold with bronchitis four or five times a year until starting Plaquenil.
Now I get a cold with sinus infection four or five times a year.
Go figure.
I am in the middle of a raging cold right now. It may seem weird, but I've noticed that when I get a cold that two things happen:
1) It always, ALWAYS goes into my chest and becomes bronchitis. I can never have a simple head cold. I'll battle it for a week, then it slips into my chest and I have to go to the doctor for meds. The whole nasty thing lasts for weeeeeeks.
2) My other SjS symptoms seem to clear up during the duration of my cold. It's like my body finds a real virus to fight leaves my innocent moisture-producing parts alone for awhile. Yes, I'm still sick with a cold, but I get good saliva flow, less aches & pains, moist eyes, etc.

We babysat the grandsons last night. Lots of coughing and sniffles. A little tickle and scratchy throat this morning. I played the tones this morning and I feel much better. When I played the Sjogren's tones I had a lot of hard crud come out of my eyes. It was a strange feeling because I had pulled crud out before I played the tones and thought that I was good for the day.
HE GAVE ME HIS COOTIES!!! Dork...

I'm also getting terrible sinus infections on plaquenil. As far as colds, I don't get runny noses, but I do get some mucus which always drains backward down my throat and settles in my chest.
I haven't had a runny nose but a lot of sneezing and I woke up this morning w/a throat tickle and feeling like I'd been run over by a Mack truck. Not even hungry. He is so on my hit list! :o

Me Too!! Well subtract the moisture and saliva. I do get really thick, almost solid type mucus gunk. BUt I notice when i get a cold or sinus infection, as well as bronchitis, my aches and pains from the SjS seem to go away. I thought I was crazy.. Thank you for sharing this.

I wish that were the case for me. This year alone I've had a massive ear infection, terrible sinus infection, the flu (and these three were all at the same time), two more sinus infections and now a cold. I'm even running a fever and I NEVER, EVER run a fever. This year has been monumental. I haven't been this sick since I left the south and all my allergies. That was nine years ago!
