Title: Musical doctors
Post by: Cheryl on October 13, 2011, 08:14:37 AM
I spent a while today scheduling upcoming recheck visits with my gyn, rheumy, etc.  It seems that we are constantly going from one doctor to another, playing musical chairs with doctors.

I have also known for a couple of weeks that I have a new vitreous detachment.  I called the office of my retina specialist, who saw me when the first vitreous detachment occurred.  Even though I am already his patient, and I recognize the symptoms, they told me I have to see my regular eye doc first and get a referral before he will see me.

What a waste of time and money!  Wouldn't it be nice if doctors' office staffs would respect the experience of an existing patient?  Restart the music; I'm on my way to see one doctor so I can pass "Go" and be allowed to see the other one.

Update:  So I went to my regular eye doc, was dilated and examined (1 1/2 hours) to learn that yes, I do have another vitreous detachment.  I was referred to the same retina specialist, and I'll have dilation and another exam from him tomorrow.

Yes, Still in the Hunt, it is stupid.

Worse than stupie -- it's wasteful! But, as they say, it is what it is.

So is the repair a procedure you'll have in the office? Is there an overnight stay somewhere?

No, A66, no repair will be necessary.   There is a possibility that it can tear the retina as the vitreous separates, so it has to be checked out.  A torn retina would require repair, if that happened.   The vitreous detachment in itself is not a concern.   It's a normal "aging" process; it's just happening a little early in my case; of course I'm not really old!   ;)

Cheryl - sorry to hear about the doctor run-around.   :(

It is a waste of money when you have to see one doctor - to get a referral for another - when you've already seen this other doctor!

I'm beginning to think with my own doctor run-around experience that corporate office is telling the doctors to generate business.  It costs me $50 co-pay to see a "specialist" - and that's just for walking in the door.  Whereas, my PCP, can do the same thing at half the cost!

I hope they can pinpoint your eye problem and help it to heal.

Let us know how your app't. goes.

Hugs,
Bucky

Cheryl,

So sorry to hear of your musical doctors!  That's the way it feels with us sometimes.

I'm also glad you don't need any repair with your eye at this point, and hope you never have a torn retina. Don't you hate that "normal aging-process" line?

I have a bit of macular degeneration (tiny, tiny) that I've had for 8 years, back when I was still in my 40's.  :D
Take care, dear, and keep us posted.

Melinda

Cheryl, so glad to know you won't need any treatment for this, but I'm so sorry you're having even more problems with your eyes. My husband also has these, but I didn't believe his eye doc who said there was nothing to be done unless there was also a retina tear. I'm such a cynic when it comes to doctors!

Let us know how your appointment goes today. I'm praying for you!

Love,
A66

((Cheryl)),

That must be a huge relief to you to know your retina is fine.   ;D  Our eyesight is so precious to us - we really need to stay on top of things when problems arise.

I'm glad things are OK for you.

Can we have some cake to celebrate?!   ;)

Have a good weekend.

Bucky
