Since my Sjogrens began 2 months I haven't had any alcohol. I would like to have the occasional beer or glass of wine. I've read that we should avoid alcohol because it is drying. Also, I'm taking Evoxac, but I don't see anything about not drinking while on it. Does anyone have the occasional drink? How much do you drink? Does it cause everything to become drier?
Thanks!
I do in moderation sometimes it makes all this tolerable :D i do not drink much because of meds but sometimes what the heck..

Well, I'm having a beer right now. But it will stay at one beer and I save it for the weekend. Alcohol in it's nature is dehydrating, so it stands to reason that it wouldn't be great for someone with dryness issues. As for Evoxac, I have no idea. But, with any drug that has increased bleeding, bruising, & gastrointestinal bleed warnings, like Plaquenil & any NSAID, alcohol can increase the chances of it happening. But, with all of that said, I still have the occasional drink. It takes the edge off the joint pain and somethings just taste better with beer or a glass of wine. Is it the smartest thing I do? No . . .
WHAT? managing any of my various idiopathic conditions without drinking?
It can be done of course.
However, not by me.

Irish was right about the gin! Who knew? ;)
I would love to have a beer,, but it drys me out to much, and for me 1 is to many and a 1000 isnt enough, truthfully?,, I felt alot better when I was drinking heavily,, downsides to everything though
A friend of mine who also has sjogrens, said that her Rheumy told her that alcoholic drinking can cause raynauds. She said she still has an drink or two occasionally, but no more that that.

Cold hands may be a small price to pay for a little enjoyment and a little escape from reality,, oh darn,, that stupid liver damage from alchol,, darn it,, just cant win,,
I don't even want an answer to this one.
I may have a glass of wine once per year if I skip my meds in preparation. Most years I just do not have any. But then I have never been one for spirited drink. If you are looking to get high, you may want to try carrot juice. If you drink too much you will turn orange but will not have a hangover.
Never take Tylenol with any alcoholic beverage! It is a deadly combination and may take just one sip.

;D I think this is my favorite post ever ;D
I haven't given up my ridiculously light beers (you know, the ones with only 64 calories). They have a very low alcohol content, and that's all I drink (I can't even handle a "regular" light beer - one will make me woozy) and wine gives me migraines so I've never been a wine drinker, but giving it up altogether ... oh gosh, not for me either ;)
I have one or two glasses a week, and i feel no ill effects from it.
My husband is kind of a wine guy, likes to collect ect. And it is one if the few luxeries I allow myself, considering how much I have had to give up.
I have a glass of wine or 2 usually on Friday or Saturday night and haven't noticed any adverse effects. I am on Plaquenil, Evoxac, BP meds, Lipitor.
I find coffee much more drying than wine so I gave up the coffee but not the wine. I ask my dr periodically if it is okay for me to have a glass of wine with dinner, especially if my meds have changed. She always says it is no problem. I have been through a lot this year and I think she figures an occasional glass of wine might do me more good than harm! I get vascular headaches and it seems to help relieve them - or maybe after a glass of wine I just don't mind that I have a headache as much! ;) I do limit myself to 6 oz tops. It is best to ask your dr if alcohol is okay for you.
I do have a glass of wine or a beer from time to time. Usually once or twice a week, actually. It's just a little piece of my peace, I have hung onto. I sit with my husband on Friday and Saturday nights and have a drink. I use moderation and one glass, does help take the edge off... and honestly it helps me forget I'm "sick" for a little while. I kind of joked with my husband about it being a blood thinner, which helps with the Antiphospholipid.
I haven't had a beer or a glass of wine in years, hummm, a good icy beer sounds good just about now! What brand would y'all recommend?

Blue moon, with a wedge of orange floating in it. Mmmm
I like Amstel Light and for a special treat I choose one of the Unibroue beers.
Before I was diagnosed with SJS I assumed I'd become an alcoholic (even though I'd only have a beer or glass of wine or two in the evenings) because I woke up with what I now call the hangover-carsick-flu every morning. So I quit drinking for a few months but I never got any better.
Since my diagnosis I can drink if I want to --- but I really don't like it anymore.
As I've said, my life has COMPLETELY changed since SJS. :(
Hey there,
I have developed a severe intolerance to alcohol...wine, beer, spirts you name it...just cant drink anymore and I love my nights out! Since all these stupid symptoms arose, my nights out are a rarity. Firstly because Im so tired I find it hard to stay up late and secondly, if i have more than 2 drinks I get violently sick. Like Ive been poisoned! I will start vomiting an hour or two after consuming the alcolhol, I will be up most of the night and into the next morning being sick. The last time I drank and this happened was a few weeks ago, I had about 5 glasses of wine at a friends birthday. The following day I started to flare really bad and my 'malar rash' reappeared and lasted a few days. Seriously thinking of just giving it up altogether...:(
Explorer,
That is too bad. It is nice to be able to relax over a glass of wine. I am always looking to see if it makes me flare. So far I seem to have only trouble with IC acting up with some wines and even that does not happen often. Maybe it is because I limit myself to about oz that I can tolerate it.
I like to have a beer or two also. It helps take the pain away for a short time, but then I pay for it later. I'm so dried out.
I have stopped drinking coffee the last 4 days and I notice a huge difference.
The simple pleasures...I'm missing.
I like to drink wine and beer depending on my mood. But since I've been investigating the possibility of having sjogren's it made me realize how dry my tongue gets. This awareness has caused me not to enjoy it as much. My favorite drink has been a Mike's Lime-ade during the summer time or a Blueberry Lemonade. But, I just don't enjoy them as much in the past month. Pretty much gave up on having them.
I wouldn't dare drink any alcoholic beverage.
heck .. I won't even touch the coffee because it is drying ....
Man .. I miss coffee.
Oh A66eyroad, I too thought that I was drinking too much by drinking one or two beers/wine a night (had the same "hangover/flu" feelings in the am, and thought it was because of the alcohol). Yeah, stopped drinking and still had the same feeling in the am (what's a girl to do? :()?
Don't miss drinking coffee much, but I do miss the caffeine jolt! :D
Patze
I sure miss the coffee but not really missing the booze! always liked holiday drinks but family is gone now so holidays aren't as big of a celebration as before. My husband loves coffee and the smell of the pot brewing when he gets home makes me want to sneak a cup :)
I too have a glass of wine once in a while and have not noticed any bad effects...but just one and maybe once or twice a week at the most. I am not a beer drinker so that has not been an issue.
I believe in moderation in all things. If it started bothering me though I would give it up and not miss it...it is more of a social thing....I carry the one drink around for hours.

Raynaud's is way more than just "cold hands"...
I've never been a drinker.. even had to give it up in college because it made me sick. (lyme)
So it's really not fair that I got Raynaud's without drinking!! :-[ ;D

I;ll wear gloves
Given up coffee cause it gave me terrible drying out & joint pain...
Approx. 3x a week I have some alcohol - I swapped red wine because of drying effect on mouth for white wine... which is better. I'd prefer a beer, if it wasn't for the calories...
Cheers!
not sure if i should admit... but I have a wine almost nightly.. it eases all my pains and my worries. if I have more than that tho.. i have the worst eye symptoms in the morning. I do think my alcohol relief is making all my problems worse tho.. just a gulity thought. I still cant help myself from my nightly pleasure. It takes all the edge off. I should probably only have one without any negative results in the am, i just tend ti have just one or tow more. the daily glass of wine or champagne is recommended with many cancer alternative treatments. Those Italians have a glass at each meal!! without negative effects.. I am sure its all with moderation.. But moderation with anything like bread..chocolate..coffee.. i have yet to have galss with each meal... I should probably try that instead of 2 to 4 at a time. :) "SALUTE" ~blessings and hugs
I have a Beer maybe once a month, Although I love my Kokopelli White Merlot. I will drink a bottle a week. I glass of wine a day is actually good for your heart, It does make my mouth dry as wine is a dry drink. But i just mix a little water in with it and make sure i drink water while I'm drinking it and I don't ever have any issues with it. I actually spoke with my Rheumy about this and he said in moderation its fine but wouldn't recommend binging or turning into a alcoholic anytime soon ;)
